Gobb... you live in... your mother's basement? Please tell me it's just a good friend letting you stay!

For you Torontonians, my sister has a 2 bedroom in the downtown area (I know it's on Queen Street, near some sort of a mental hospital) which goes for 1200 per month.

I never understood "living in your mom's/parents' basement". Do people really move into basements?

Looking at about 800 a month for a 4 bedroom, 2 bath over here in Perth. I dont rent because Im still sponging off the folks but thats about standard in the most available regions. You can obviously pay a lot more and you can find cheaper also. There has been a massive property boom lately that has forced all the prices up also, when I started uni back in '03 you could get 5 bedrooms for 160 a week(total, not shared) so that worked out to about 40 a week on rent, not bad really.

$1700/mo? Damn I could barely afford half that as a student when i was working summer jobs in LA.

I got a two bedroom place $1540/mo in costa mesa, ca. Though I do know of places which charge higher rents (see joe lucky's post). My apt isn't fancy but it isn't a dump either. It is a good deal, real nice location next to lots of stores and stuff so i can walk.

I shopped around last year and found places going up to $2500/mo for two bedroom units, some of them smaller than the one I got right now. The only diff was these places were fancier with nicer pools, fake roman/greek architecture etc.

When I first started renting here prices were reasonable, but they've gone up by $100/mo almost every year at my complex. I'm sure if someone wanted to rent my uni now it'd be $1650 or something.

There's cheaper areas ($2-400) around but I'm not sure I really wanna live there.

I honestly cant imagine paying 3000 a month for a 1BR, it would want to have a palacial bathroom, living room, games room, basketball court, tennis court, kitchen and home gym along with it. Oh and a swimming pool. That is just extortionate.

if you're renting for 3000 a month, you might as well be making mortage payments and buy a house. at least you'll have something to show for all the money you spent

converted 1BR. still not big, but i share w/ roommate so pay half. its 750 sq ft, my bedroom is 11'x9'. newly remodeled and very nice looking, but nothing amazing, and the price is in line with the area.

thank you for pointing that out genius, unfortunately prior to this second it had never crossed my mind.

also unfortunately, my apartment is going for about $1M. in order to not die from interest, i need to pay min of 10% down. when you add in maintenance fees and whatnot, i'd be paying WAY more/month than now (which I can't afford) and be out at least $100k up front (which I can't afford). not to mention closing costs for a property i'd be selling in 1 year, in an area where property values are rising at a paltry 5%. at the end of it all, i actually LOSE money by buying, even if i could afford it...

You see that whats gets me. I have a single room in my house at the moment that is almost as big as your whole damn apartment and if we rented this place out we wouldnt get close to that Australian, nevermind US. Its just extortionate. I really couldnt pay that and feel right. I know its just the different area's and Im sure there are places over here that charge similar amounts. But I couldnt pay 3k for an apartment when I could be buying 3 4bed, 2 bath houses at once for the same sort of amount. Really is outrageous to here that.

I have a mate whose parents are renting one of their properties which is a 5 bed, 2 bath with pool in one of the most expensive area's in Perth for $650 a week and thats Australian. The place is a damn fine house and its not costing that much.

Is the upper west side really worth it? That bedroom's slightly smaller than the one I was paying $440 for up in the Heights.

well I don't know what to say, buying around here is much easier I guess. I know people who were 20 when they bought their first home, the prices are so much more accesible. For the price of a bungalo in Toronto or Vancouver or Calgary, I could buy a 3 storey home in the suburbs and a large condo downtown.

Ofcourse my place was a temporary sublet and it was a high season, but I paid 500 for a shared bedroom in a townhouse. That's by far the highest rate I've ever paid. I'll be heading back there in the fall and got a room on SoBe for 300$ a month.

I used to stay in Hollywood, CA, 500$ a month for a shared room, again very temporary for shorter periods. I won't be getting anything good aparment wise until I actually settle my ass down in the States.
Sure some hotels had nice rates(75$ a week for a room) in downtown L.A, but only three blocks away from the heart of "the Box". Crackheads, meth junkies, heroine addicted hiv positive hookers.. Day time it's nice but at night..no thank you.

Not too pretty neigborhood to live around is it
