Default Ricky Rubio

Hes Going To Be The Greatest International Player Ever<----Tough Statement To Say But Believe Me He Will

Ricard "Ricky" Rubio Vives (October 21, 1990) is a Spanish pro basketball player. Considered a child prodigy in basketball, Rubio became the youngest ever to play in Spain's ACB, arguably the top domestic league in Europe, on October 15, 2005.[1] The 6'4" (1.92 m) Rubio is playing point guard for Joventut Badalona in both the ACB and the Euroleague, generally regarded as the world's top annual basketball competition outside the NBA. Displaying amazing talent and maturity despite his young age, Rubio is commonly regarded as the best European guard prospect since Dražen Petrović. Due to his scoring dominance and creativity, Rubio has been compared to Pete Maravich.[2] Former NBA guard Pepe Sánchez, who plays at the point for ACB rivals Unicaja Málaga, made this comment in a February 2007 interview for a Euroleague profile of Rubio:

“ I think he's a freak of nature — being so young and being so skilled and also so cool all the time. You can see that he knows what he's doing. He's not playing out there with pros based only on his talents. He knows the game and he can only improve. I think he'll be a great player. It all depends on him, but I personally think he's gong to be great.[3] ”

Despite his notability, he is being carefully shielded from excessive media attention. Joventut and the Rubio family have agreed that he will not be available for interviews until he turns 18.[3]

In August of 2006 Rubio led the Spanish national team to the FIBA Europe U16 Championship. During the tournament (excluding the final game), Rubio achieved two triple-doubles and one quadruple-double. In the 110-106 double overtime finale victory over Russia, Rubio scored 51 points (including a three-point buzzer-beater shoot from mid court to force the first overtime), grabbed 24 rebounds, made 12 assists and stole the ball seven times — a performance unprecedented in tournament history. Rubio also was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading it in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

Rubio made his Euroleague debut on October 24, 2006, versus Panathinaikos of Athens. He displayed extraordinary maturity as Joventut's backup point guard for Elmer Bennett. As of the end of the 2006-07 Euroleague regular season, he leads the Euroleague in steals by a large margin, averaging 3.45 steals per game, although playing only 18 minutes per game. He also ranks 17th among the top passers, averaging 3.27 assists per game.

Rubio was featured in SLAM Magazine in April 2007, in the piece the author noted that he considered him the best non NBA player in the world and compared him to Magic Johnson.

Don't want to sound harsh but, kiddo, how do you know? The only intl. players you've seen are Dirk, Manu and Tony Parker. You haven't seen anything from Ricky besides these highlights and you haven't seen 2% of the NBA's history of intl. players.

We've all read about this Ricky kid. No need to make bold statements everybody here knows you don't have any business making.

Seems like he has some skill but some of those guys checking him couldn't guard a mailbox.

IMO a Tony Parker clone might be more a more reasonable expectation than "greatest international player ever." And he'll probably never be as good as Parker.

he will be better than parker, i'm already sure of that. kid's natural feel for game of basketball is something you can't teach - and something he's above parker even right now. he's also more than decent athlete even for nba level, so that won't limit him.
however, he's similar to TP because he is quite a lousy shooter. but that's possible to improve.

but european GOAT? very far fetched. not entirely impossible, i'd guess, but very improbable.

4,5 assists and 3,5 steals per game? at age of sixteen? at position that's toughest to learn how to play?

you're kidding yourself. he's a phenom.

3.5 spg in 18mpg in the euroleague is beyond sick, just plain ridiculous. Not sure any player in the NBA right now could match it.That alone makes him worth drafting, add in his scoring and passing and he could be something special.
Then again he's only 16, so too early to really tell. He does look damn good though.

You can't just say he will be the greatest international player just from a couple of stats and a few highlights.

These videos show me nothing. Passes that don't lead to assists, steals that that aren't possesive, a 9 second clip of p&r assist (whooptie). Can this guy even shoot the ball?

Your "will be the best Euro" statement is a real insult to inactive and active Europeans who played in the league. Ricky Rubio hasn't played 1 minute of NBA basketball just yet.

Whoa, I'm kinda upset...need to...chill...out.

He will be great.
That said, an euro player hasn't got to play in his prime (or at all) the NBA to be considered the best ever.
Right now I consider Sabonis the best euro ever, and you know his career, right?

Default Re: Ricky Rubio

He is by far the most dominant talent in recent history when being compared to his own age group, and he doesnt do it by being physically overwhelming.

He is the first and only 16 year old to get regular minutes in euroleague. And he is a dominant defensive presence there as well. To compare, the level of play in Euroleague is by far superior to anything that NCAA Div. 1 ball has to offer. And he is getting playing time. And is productive. At 16 years old. Its gonna be a monumental upset if he doesnt make the NBA.
