Default MJ's Thoughts on Kobe Bryant(Past)

I was reading my usual MJ biography book, I haven't read it a while..but I got to a page where MJ talks about Kobe Bryant.

He was critizing Kobe Bryant for not going to college.

Quote:
The one thing I would tell younger players is to enjoy the moment and be careful not to put themselves into A box others have erected for them. Success will breed higher expectations, but that's a natural evolution in our society. You have to know who you are before you can grow as a person and a player.

LOOK AT KOBE BRYANT. HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT KOBE BRYANT'S GAME IS IS YET.

HOW COULD HE?

He went to an environment in which he has to sink or swim.
He's beem able to get by on physical ability, but he has develop his own foundation.
Before he can become a great player. He can by borrowing from other players in the short term. But sooner or later he will have to find his own game. That's why College is so important. If I had come right out of High School into the NBA I don't think I would have become the same player. I wouldn't have had that foundation that North Carolina provided. At the professional level you have to produce. I would have found ways compete night after night instead of developinga Long-Term plan.

CAN KOBE BRYANT BECOME A GREAT PLAYER?

Sure, but it's going to take a lot more effort to refine his skills.

At the same time he's trying to survive.

Now for the question.

If Kobe Bryant went to college, would he became a better player than he is as of right now?

Don't think so. I think he made the right decision. I can't explain why it's this way but I don't find it as a series of coincidences that a few years ago a lot of elite players in the L came straight out of HS. Jermaine O'Neal, Kobe, KG, TMAC.

I'm not saying I'm any better but I don't think MJ has enough knowledge to speak on whether Kobe should have gone to College or not.

its not just the fact that MJ went to college.. its the fact that he was coached by Dean Smith that helped him tremendously.

If im not mistaken that book came out around 1998...that was Kobes second year in the league...he averaged 25 mins 15pts 3rebounds 2assists. not to mention the year before that (his rookie year) was 15mins 7pts 2rebounds 1assist. So judging by the time frame he was going by his first two years in the league when Kobe was seen as an athletic kid with alot of potential.
