It could be something as simple a overheating. Have you been on all day?

If not, it could be hardware problem. Maybe a ram issue? Try running a memtest.

As suggested above, try running in safe mode first and see what you get.

Well actually, the laptop is my friend's. Today, he told me the story about his laptop with the virus and then bought a new one. Now he has two, and i'm thinking of buying the one with the virus from him. Should i do it? he will sell the lap top to me for not that much. What will i have to do to make the laptop work again.

P.S. Sorry, for saying that the laptop was mine in the beginning. I just wanted to see what you guys might say about fixing a laptop with a virus on it.

Yes, take it off his hands if he offers you a reasonable price.

Just buy a copy of Windows XP, should be quite cheap, $150ish, format the drive and re-install.

Or just download an Ubuntu ISO, burn it, install that. I've heard that the installation is very straight-forward and not scary at all anymore.

Funny because I offered a solution that didn't cost anything (except for the cost of a blank CD) and didn't require him to leave his chair right there in my post.
