It was supposed to be from a female point of view, but with a male writer/director it could be expected to have a patriarchal lean to it. I enjoyed the movie more because of how it was put together, and the way he laid out the story. I have always been a fan of filmmakers putting together good films on a small budget.

my favourite is either 'he got game' or 'do the right thing'. i also enjoyed 'crooklyn' and 'clockers'.

what'd everyone make of the ending of 'he got game'? i always tied the incident in the final scene back to jesus "quitting" in his childhood, but it still didn't make complete sense.

I just thought it was a symbollic way of saying that the ball was now in Jesus' court.

i always thought it was reflective of jake's frustration with the "system". if you recall, jesus gets pissed off and throws the ball over the fence when jake starts fouling him and generally playing outside the rules. later on, jake did everything he could to secure early release, changed his ways, etc, but to no avail...

Most college films present unrealistic views of college life, and leave impressionable teens disappointed when they hit campus.

I love mostly all of Spike movies. Cant think of the ones I dont like but can list ones I do.

The subject matter in School Daze (African American college society) had never been depicted in movies before, or since to my recollection. I think especially for white college kids it was a window to a world they didn't know existed.

I would so Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn (athough I haven't seen it in years), Inside Man and the 25th Hour are my favorites. Yes, his films can be heavy handed, but they usually have memorable scenes in them. I haven't saw Malcolm X in so long that I will can't say anything about it right now. I've liked all of his movies that I've seen, but I need to see the rest.

the scenes of malcolm in mecca during their holy days with the thousands of people processing in prayer has been imbedded in my brain forever-- a very powerful moment of profound prayer

That seems to be a pretty consistent theme with Spike. He tends to bite off a little more than he can chew. It may have something to do with him being so invested in the material, since he usually takes things from production to writing to shooting, that he has trouble editing rationally.

Do The Right Thing was great, but I think a lot of people have some of the subtleties of the character interactions go over their heads.
