Let's talk about Kobe's upcoming season:
He wants KG in a deal. The only way that happens is if the Lakers package both Odom and Bynum. Both of the latter know this, so Kobe has destoyed the chemistry in the locker room.

This is not about how well either one of these guys does their job. It's about star status. Anyone that thinks Kobe is a bigger star than Beckham is nuts.

Beckham is a joke. Always have been. He was a good player , that's it.
Could never use his lef foot, head the ball, no dribbling skilss at all. He has always been slow as hell. Even in his prime, he was not one of the best players in the world.
I remember seeing Beckham and Manchester United getting schooled by the old legend Romario against Vasco in 2000 at Brasil.
For American soccer , that once had the best player ever playing here , Jesus himself Pele. And also had legends like Beckenbauer, George Best and Eusebio. Signing Beckham means nothing. You guys should invest in youth teams to improve your kids. This crazy signing of famous players did not work long term when you signed the best player ever, it will sure not work by signing the Paris Hilton of soccer, all celebrity gossip, no soccer.

In terms of universal appeal, Beckham is obviously more popular than Kobe but I don't think that he'll be the leading sports figure in L.A. It's just all this hype surrounding his move to L.A...we'll see what he's capable of next week.

Beckham will be more popular than Kobe in LA the way Brad Pitt is more popular than Kobe in LA.
Beckham hanging out at Area and eating at The Ivy and what not will make him bigger. Not playing 30 miles away in Carson, CA.

Beckham's signing has nothing to do with his ranking as a soccer player. It has to do with his fame. The guy is on the short list for most recognizable man in the world.
This move is about getting major media coverage for the MLS. Granted he'll be near the end of his career when it happens but when Thierry Henry signs with the NY/NJ franchise that move will be about his soccer abilities.

in LA kobe is a bigger star, the galaxy have a loyal following of soccer fans but it is never discussed on local sports shows, radio or TV, if it gets any attention at all it's on the last snippet of sports news on 11pm brodcast...
this will be big for a week or two then attention will switch to his wife and her doings as she bounces around the in crowd...

Kobe is the much bigger star in both LA and U.S.
Beckham is much bigger world-wide.
(I mean sports star, not celebrity)
Yet, the world also knows Beckham is past his prime.
