Default Define "All-Star"

What does it take for you to label a player an all-star? For instance, Caron Butler was an all-star, but some people don't think he deserved it. What exactly does it take? Here's somethings I believe factor into an all-star caliber player.

- Being the first or second option on your team, unless you're the Detroit Pistons or a purely teamwork oriented franchise. Or the third option if your team has three main guys.

- Being good at at least once thing. Whether it's scoring, rebounding, assisting, defense, blocking, stealing, etc.

- Being a game changer on either end. A player that forces the opposition to alter their gameplan or pay close attention to them when they're on the court because of their ability to have a massive impact.

- Having team success or being a player that can win. If you want to base it on individual talent, then this point is irrelevant.

Post some of your own.

An All-Star is one of the 24 best players in the league. They are usually the star or co-star(s) of their current team. They do something really well, may it be score, defend or a great passer.

all-star = player on the all-star team.

simple

end convo

If a guy is a good player but was not on the all-star team, he is an all-star caliber player.

being selected to the All-Star team in recent years, or being close to the level of play he was when selected an all-star. Having good chances at being selected as an All-Star in this current season (example Melo last year, wasn't officially an All-Star till voting was finished, but everyone knew he was at that level)

I think if you're a good player that contributes a lot to your team and has made an allstar team, then call the player an allstar.

I mean I wouldn't call Finley an allstar now, but Manu? Yeah. If Camby used to make a lot of allstar teams, then yeah. Marbury hasn't sniffed an allstar team recently, but he deserves to be labeled an allstar. Magloire? Nah. Zydrunas? Maybe.

somebody who makes the all-star team. "all-star caliber" id use to describe guys who are on the same level as some all-stars; prime mike bibby for example was definitely an "all-star caliber" player.

Theres atleast 35 guys who are described as all-star level players, so I think that would be inadequate definition.

read my post. being an all-star level (or "caliber") player is different than actually being an all-star.

An all-star is a player who stands out among others, and does the intangibles to help his team...I dont think Caron Butler was All-star status last year but he is in the East so I think that was the main reason he made it...Dont get me wrong, Caron is good but I dont think he stands out like players such as T-Mac, Kobe, and others like Allen Iverson...

very subjective

superstar incorporates the popularity element. Kobe & Shaq are obv superstars, Lebron is a superstar, Tim Duncan is only arguably a superstar.

Legend should be saved for an innovator/multiple championship winner

All-time great is someone who made multiple all-star teams, did not necessarily win a championship (Barkley, Stockton, Malone), and is really up to whoever is making the argument for a player.
