Default Any word on Pops?

Just curious if anyone had heard anything regarding Pops since I believe 8/31 is the last day we have to renew his contract.

Suisei Seki has an OK reputation so far
Default Re: Any word on Pops?

apparently the Mavs did not decide to pickup the option for Pops. He maybe well headed to another team but more likely he'd play in Europe.

Mavs to let Pops become free agent

Mensah-Bonsu can play in Europe; team decides not to pick up option

12:21 AM CDT on Friday, August 31, 2007

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

The Mavericks have elected not to exercise their option on Pops Mensah-Bonsu, meaning the 6-9 forward will become a free agent Saturday.

The team had until today to guarantee Mensah-Bonsu's contract for the upcoming season. That would have cost the team $687,456. By letting his contract expire, it means any NBA team can claim Mensah-Bonsu off waivers, although that seems unlikely as they would be responsible for his full salary this season.

The Mavs' decision clears the way for Mensah-Bonsu to play in Europe this season, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said.

"Pops wants to go somewhere where he can play," Nelson said. "And this keeps our options open if we want to try to get him back in the future."

Mensah-Bonsu played 12 games last season, averaging 2.4 points and 1.8 rebounds.

The Mavs have 15 guaranteed contracts for this season and still are considering adding a veteran big man such as Chris Webber or P.J. Brown. That would require jettisoning another player.

A lot of people in Dallas liked him because he was flashy, and could throw down monster dunks, unlike every other player on the Mavs. (With the exception of Devin Harris) He's just one of those scrubs everybody like cheers for. Kinda like DJ.

Mensah-Bonsu signs in Italy, Pinnock drafted again
by Andrew Alberg
Sports Editor
Former GW standout Pops Mensah-Bonsu signed with Benotton Treviso of the Italian Serie A league after being released by the National Basketball Association's Dallas Mavericks. Mensah-Bonsu impressed various observers during the NBA's summer league, but the talent-filled Mavericks did not have space on their roster for the 6-foot-9 forward.

Mensah-Bonsu's former teammate Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock was selected number one overall in the NBA Developmental League's Expansion Draft by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Pinnock played with the NBDL's Arkansas RimRockers last season and was on Washington Wizards' summer league team but was not invited to training camp.

Pinnock was drafted by the Mavericks with the 58th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers later that night. Pinnock never signed a contract with the Lakers and played in Germany for part of the 2006-2007 season.
