I have somewhat of a soft spot for Pete, but even I think Kobe is a few good tiers ahead of him. When I was a young kid, Pistol Pete was my hero. My grandfather had dozens of old tapes of Jazz/Hawks games, as Pete was his favorite player. He showed them to me, and I was impressed. I tried to learn all his moves, and pretty much perfected his famous wrist pass. He was one of the greatest highlight reels the NBA has had, but even I consider him overrated.
I think the wild card for Kobe is having Phil as his coach. If anybody can channel his individual greatness into team greatness it will be Phil. In fact, I think that the challenge is what brought Phil back to the Lakers.
In reality, players are different. I don't ever expect Kobe to be the type of player/leader that Magic was. If he leads the Lakers to more championships I could careless if people still call him a selfish ballhog. He is who he is.
I would compare Kobe to MJ more than anybody else.
Before yall get all uptight, no, Kobe is no where near the same level of greatness as Jordan. However, his ability to take over a game, be super-clutch, and his almost single-minded mentality of win at all costs. They are very similar.
