Read the insidehoops.com rumors page. This contract stuff has been explained about 800 times.

It's so he can sign a larger extension when this contract runs out

they were saying that these players wanted to keep their options open, Jebron started this whole thing. This is good for the team and the player. The player has his options open and this is good for the team because if the player gets injured during this career, they wont be paying him while hes injured. Hence, Jon Bender from Indy

beacuse in a couple of years... No Shaq, Zo and GP... Jason Williams getting worse... Walker will be Webber of today... No more championship... signing with another team next time would make his future better...

I think in a few years..the cap is going to be raised..thus meaning bigger contracts can be signed...and if they have shorter contracts now, they can negotiate even bigger contracts when their current contracts expire...it gives them a chance to bolt if their respective teams are doing crap..but i think its mainly for money reason, as if their contracts arnt big enough now...but becasue they are such great players (bron, wade, Bosh) they can afford to take the risk of having a shorter contract becasue they know they will be getting a max deal in the near future...makes total sense for them to sign shorter deals
