Arrow Best Selling Music Artists....

I only am showing the ones we always debate about. Just for anyone who's interested in just how popular the bands are based on record sales.

Over 500 million records sold- The Beatles

Over 250 million records sold- Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen.

Over 100 million records sold- AC/DC, Aerosmith, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, CCR, Deep Purple, Prince, Rolling Stones, U2, The Who.

Over 75 million records sold- Guns 'N Roses, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Metallica, REM, Van Halen.

Over 50 million records sold- Bob Marley, Def Leppard, The Doors, Green Day, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

I was suprised that Pink Floyd was so high and Rolling Stones that low. I would have bet it was reversed before I looked it up. REM is quite high too.

A band like Green Day just doesn't belong on this list.

Pearl Jam and Nirvana have sold around 65 mil each which is a testament to Pearl Jam for being so successful. I believe they are more popular world wide than Nirvana. NA has an infatuation with Curt Cobain.

Thought Johnny Cash would be higher.

GnR and Metallica are actually closing in on 100 mil (both are over the 90 mil mark). My Maiden is over 80 mil.

Where's Jimi?

I never believed the Beatles sold over 500 million.

I didn't include Michael Jackson cause none of the rock guys here ever talk about him. But ya, he's also in the 500 mil group.

I should have mentioned the Jacksons though even if we don't talk much about them either.

Also suprised Hendrix isn't at least in the 50 mil range.

I'm not a Green Day fan, but they keep reinventing themselves and coming out with hits (even if those hits suck). They DO play their own instruments and from what I know write their own songs.

They are one of a handful of bands in the 90s-today that have been able to claim such success which is worth something in my book.

Does that include the albums recorded with the Jackson 5 aswell? If so then hitting 750 million wouldn't suprise me at all.

Dookie was good...that's it. There only reinvention was their alst album and it sucked except for 1 or 2 songs.

They had some good songs here and there on their other 90's albums and I did listen to them, but not even close to the quality of the other artists on the list.

Michael Jackson

Jackson dancing with zombies in the revolutionary "Thriller" music video.Michael Jackson is an American R&B, New jack swing, Soul, pop, Disco and rock artist whose recording career has spanned from 1969 to the present. In November 2006 The Guinness Book of Records presented Jackson with eight certificates for musical achievements. Among them "The Most Successful Entertainer of All Time" , "Highest paid Entertainer of all time" (he received $125 million in album and tour sales in 1989) and "First Entertainer to sell more than 100 million albums outside the US." [1] In 1982, Jackson recorded the best-selling album of all-time, Thriller, with reported worldwide sales of over 104 million from Guinness World Records. He is the first artist to debut a single at #1 in the U.S. with "You Are Not Alone" (1995) ,[2] .

Jackson also issued Bad (1987) which sold 32 million units and is the only album to have 5 #1 singles in the U.S , Dangerous (1991), which became one of the best-selling New jack swing album of all time selling 30 million units. HIStory (1995) which became the best selling double disk album ever at 36 million units[3] and Blood on the Dance Floor (1997) which became the best selling remix album ever. [4] . He has released seven solo studio albums between 1979-2001, four of which have each sold a minimum of 30 million units worldwide.

Michael Jackson has been awarded numerous honors, including the World Music Awards' Best-selling pop male artist of the Millennium.[5] Jackson is often referred to as the 'King of Pop' by fans and media alike. Michael Jackson's record company Sony BMG has never given an accumulative sales figure for Jackson, but has stated the singer as being "the single most successful entertainer of the 20th century" and claims that he "has sold more recordings than any other single artist."[6] At the World Music Awards in 2006 it was announced that Jackson had sold over 750 million albums and singles worldwide [7].
I don't think so, this just talks about his solo material.

I'd agree, but apparently they do have fans. And yes Dookie is good, not great. These days all it takes is one or two songs off an album. Today's function of an album is to produce 1 or two hit songs.

Can you imagine the Rolling Stones or whoever on that list using today's formula? One or two good songs an album and then sell millions? They'd be 40x as rich and successful.

There is no such thing as an album (or at least very few.)

The Offspring was 10x the band that Green Day was. Not of the quality as those other bands either, but that band was the best punk/rock band of the 90's. Ignition, Smash and Ixnay on the Hombre all better than any Green Day album ever. Green sold more cause they looked more family friendly (This is before Americana when Offspring turned gay themselves).

It says that the 750 million records sold also include singles sold. That could contribute alot of sales right there.

Hippos, do the numbers you provided include singles aswell or just albums?

I don't know how accurate charting sales (especially worldwide) was back then either.

I'm more surprised that someone who is famous worldwide and has been around a longtime, like Clapton, isn't on there.
