That's too bad, although I'm a "hater" I only want to see him fail on the court, and bear him no ill will off of it. If Coach K copuld have kept him close to the team concept he'd dominate. Wade and Bron ought to cover the loss of Bryant's abilities completely though (IMO they're better than him anyhow) so I'm not worried.
I believe it said he won't be in training camp is all. He is still on team.
No he's still on the team as far as the 2008 Olympics, he wont be playing in this years wold championships. And I hope Kobe learned hit lesson from his last knee injuries of the do's and don'ts of off-season recovery.
Looks like he's still playing and may be with the team, just not of the court...

why do players wait so long? couldnt he have had the surgery last month? maybe 2 months ago?
He could have, but you generally want to hold out on surgery and keep it as a last resort until you're certain that it's the correct thing to do and that time won't heal the injury.
There are players who have purposefully waited late and have missed time with their ball clubs because they are either selfish or stupid. In this specific case, Bryant is probably doing the right thing and should be fine by the beginning of training camp.
