Default Health Insurance - Should It Be Mandatory?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20255585/

Should people be required to carry their own personal medical insurance? In the state of Massachusetts, it is a law. How do you feel about this somewhat abstract prerequisite that no other state has yet to even hint at proposing?

Automobile insurance is mandatory as well, however that's because you're liable for others besides just you, yourself and I. With health insurance, you're only liable for your own personal medical treatment. Your next door neighbor is not at risk if you're unhealthy, so why is this now a "required" coverage for the residents of MA?

I believe all this sounds good on paper, but in reality:

A) There's really no way to "force" people to carry the insurance. Yes, there's a "tax penalty" however that will not force people to follow the law.

B) It doesn't seem very constitutional for our country to make us take care of ourselves. If we were a liability to others around us, I could see the logic, but that's not the case here.

Good find... Sagat.

But I don't know how the health care isssue should be solved.

At age 27, it seems like I'm throwing away a $hit load of money, so I don't
pay for it. I also know I could get in a serious accident today and loose a lot of cash.

I think if every man woman and child is required to pay $1,000 a year
then all health care and doctor visits should be free. Including medicine.

300,000,000 people in the USA? X 1,000$ = $300,000,000,000

300$ billion from the people and 200$ billion from the governmnet =
half a trillion dollars.

Does our country spend more than that on health care a year?

But I'm not sure if should be mandatory.

Hummmm... maybe you're right. I didn't think about those already on Medicaid ( * cough LowRider236 cough * ) ... so if you're already receiving government assistance for your health insurance, need not reply.

The concept of insurance in general is risk versus benefit. This holds true for both the consumer and the insurance company (whether is be medical, car, home, etc insurance).

Is it fair to the consumer? Someone could go through their entire life and hardly ever need medical treatment, however they've spent thousands of dollars for something they never needed in the first place. Then again, you have the extreme opposite. Someone could buy medical insurance today, have a car accident tomorrow, and need $250,000 immediately for hospital bills, and another $750,000 to cover lifelong injuries sustained from the accident.

It's all about risk, but when you make consumers pay for a service they may or may not need, you've gone too far (IMO).
