If indeed he (Larry Turner) was trained in here, Our national team should pursue him to play for them as a naturalized player. . . There's not much adjustment culturally as Turner was already exposed to Filipino style basketball.
Quote:
Former Tiger basketball center Larry Turner has been signed to the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.
Turner, a Milledgeville, Ga., native, transferred to TSU from the University of Oklahoma in 2005 and averaged 5.8 points and 6.1 rebounds during his senior year with the Tigers.
"I'm excited about entering the next stage of my life," he said. "My dream was to play in the NBA."
Playing with the Lakers summer league team this year, Turner averaged 7.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in five games. He also scored a high of 13 points and had 9 rebounds during summer league play.
"I had nine NBA workouts and summer league paid off," Turner said.
Turner signed onto the team as a free agent. According to Lakers.com, the terms of the agreement would not be released due to the team's policy.
Former Laker power forward and current assistant coach Kurt Rambis said in an interview on Lakers.com that Turner "has a lot of energy and effort… (h)e's a big guy that runs the floor, plays hard, listens, blocks shots, rebounds the basketball."
Turner is to report to Lakers training camp in October.
"I'm going with a chip on my shoulder to prove I belong there," Turner said.
