The off-the-court stuff must be more fun when you don't have such a big role on the court anymore - you can hit the clubs a bit more and party.

Also, I think some of these guys get to the end of their career, notice that they don't have a whole lot of money invested, and that $1 million veteran minimum salary doesn't look so bad.

I think it's more of a monetary thing/love of the game than a love for traveling, going to the clubs. Gary Payton has been to every NBA city countless of times. I mean, yeah, going to L.A/Miami/Atlanta/NYC might be kinda fun, but in the mix are trips to Portland, Milwaukee, Sacramento, etc that aren't all that great (by NBA city standards). Combine that with having to be away from your family, and I don't think the whole travel/going to the clubs thing has the same appeal as it did for him 17 years ago......

GP was mighty decent/servicable and was a savvy veteran and even provided some clutch plays during the 06 run, but last year health really caught up to him and now ofcourse he's even moreso of just a corpse of what used to be a damn good player. He had some major back and achilles problems last year..

But all things being said, I would not be suprised if he signed with Boston to ring chase for a second over there....

That's great. I get to see Gary Payton play for another season. Hopefully he does comeback and play for another contender, that would obviously be the team I would root for...Yeah, like everyone said, he still loves the game too much to quit, and still has that competitive desire...

Come on now, if players like Reggie Miller and Houston are talking come back, what's wrong with Payton coming back? The only difference is he hasn't retired in the middle, so I don't see what's the problem

He still is one of the best backup PGs and can really help any team

i still think he should re-join the sonics for one thing:

trash talk the administration and shame them for even thinking of moving the sonics

Not enough roster spots for both Payton and Spree. I don't pretend to know the mind of Danny Ainge but if I were him I'd send Jackie Manuel back to the D-League and use the bi-annual exception on GP.

The Heat's chances are slim to none.

So, why is he going to play again? I just don't see the point.

The Celtics need a backup PG. He could win a championship with them.

One would think age matters, but it depends on who you're talking about. Reggie Miller's 42, people were still trying to convince him to go for another year. Kevin Willis was like 60 years old, he was still as tough as they come. Let's not forget Jordan, either.

It is time to retire when you used to be the best defensive guard in the NBA, and you are now one of the worst defensive guards in the NBA.

If you love basketball so much maybe return next year as an assistant coach of the Oklahoma Super Sonics.

Stop calling them the ****ing Oklahoma SuperSonics. Seattle Supersonics, not Oklahoma.

Sure he doesn't give a crap, but it still hinders his legacy. And yes as you said, the only legit reason is just that he loves basketball and the NBA. Other than that, no reason he should return. How many teams would want to sign him? 5 max?

I don't personally have anything against him coming back, he can if he wants. I'm just saying there's not much benefit out of it except self-satisfaction. Or maybe being on the edge of a roster on a championship team.
