So Bulls says Kobe is in the top 6 all time, he cites Kobes 81 point game, his streak of 50 point games, his streak of 40 point games and his 3 rings as a validater of greatness. so that got me thinking, what does it take for a player to be considered a top ten all time player?
Points?
Health?
Defense?
Teamwork?
Rings?
Awards?
I don't want this to be an actual top ten players thread, I'd like to see it remain a discussion on just what it takes to be considered one, please...lol
Re: What's it take to be a top ten ALL time Player?
You need to have it ALL basically. The numbers, the rings (as the leader), the consistency, the MVPs, the finals MVPs, all nba teams, etc..
That's why Kobe doesn't belong there yet and thats why imo, its a push putting Oscar in there (although I'm not sure there is anyone that can claim his spot)

He's put up the 2 greatest individual performances in regular season history. Kobe is a top 6-8 player of all-time. Oscar is around top 30.
this is not a thread to compare players or an actual thread of top ten players, just a discussion on what it takes to be one....

.. i agree a player must have it all, but few players have it all in a balanced package, as an example kareeem could score, and pass, he got the awards and rings yet he still is not considered a real defensive monster, but he was better than average for his position, but not that much better than average...
Re: What's it take to be a top ten ALL time Player?
Pretty much, as others have said, you have to have it all. The only reason guys like Barkley and Malone hardly, if ever get mentioned there, are because they don't have that bling
Re: What's it take to be a top ten ALL time Player?
My top 10 is
1.Michael Jordan
2.Magic Johnson
3.Shaquille O'Neal
4.Kareem Abdul Jabbar
5.Larry Bird
6.Hakeem Olajuwon
7.Wilt Chamberlain
8.Bill Russell
9.Tim Duncan
10.Isiah Thomas
HM: Scottie Pippen, John Stockton, Oscar Robertson, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, George Mikan
Re: What's it take to be a top ten ALL time Player?
a top ten players credentials speak for themselves. you must have multiple of everything...MVPs, Finals MVPs, first team all nba, first team all nba defense. and the intangables like leadership, getting everyone involved, court vision, defensive instincts, dominance, etc.

if you had to single out one thing to say what makes that guy a top ten what would you choose or would it be dependent on the player?
example, jordan was a monster in so many ways but obviously scoring was his main stay, but then a player like magic really could do it all yet there is certainly room for debate as to who was better...

Multiple Finals MVPs have to be the biggest measurement along with season MVPs. a Finals MVP shows that you basically carried the team in the biggest series of the year. now sure there are exceptions like chauncey billups or tony parker but that is why i said multiple Finals MVPs.
Re: What's it take to be a top ten ALL time Player?
well, top 10 is a ridiculously tough spot. I mean, it seems like the top 10 are practically cast in stone with only a little wiggle room for spots 8, 9, 10.
I just don't think it's fair to guys like Barkley, Malone and John Stockton to say they cannot be top 10 if they don't have a ring. Malone is arguably the best PF of all time and Stockton is the assist-master of all time and therefore one of the best PGs of all time. very tough to lock them out. I don't like rings as a criteria...too many circumstances come in to play.

Nothing really. I guess though you could look at the players I picked and see that you need everything to be top 10...rings, stats, clutch performances finals mvps(not including players who played before that award because we all know Russell would have some).
