Default that JO to the Lakers non-trade

Bird demanded LO and Bynum. Lakers said no way.
Who was right?
a) Lakers
b) Bird
c) both
d) neither, they should have worked harder, expanded the trade to make it happen.

so far i'm goin to say the Lakers...JO is not worth that much at this time in his career coming off the injury.... now some may say odom is coming off surgery too, and that's correct so that's a wash, odoms knowledge of the triangle is why he's more valuble to the Lakers...
I'd trade odom and someone else maybe cook for JO or Bynum and some other players that balance the salaries, vlad rad, kwame cook pick one but not bynum and odom...

Both are right.

Bird needs quality back for Jermaine. On the Laker side trading for a player like O'Neal is pointless if you have to get rid of Lamar Odom to do it.

b) Bird was very smart in this scenario. THe Lakers are plain dumb to not give up Odom and Bynum for Jermaine O'Neal. O'Neal is a franchise player, something Odom never was/is. Bynum's been a bust so far. Larry Bird is smart in this decision.

LOL the Lakers would be dumb to make the trade. Bynum hasn't been a bust in fact he has been better than the Lakers first expected and has progressed way faster than Jermaine O'Neal did at that age. Odom is almost as effective as Jermaine too.

How do you know he's progressed faster than O'Neal at that age? If Jermaine got as many minutes as Bynum did his first 2 years, then he would have put up twice the numbers that Bynum is putting up. I can just tell Bynum is not a polished player when I see him play.

if it works I'd throw in Shawne Williams, then I think its fair as each side gets a vet and each side gets a promising young player

I think in this case, the Lakers are doing the right thing. JO has a long injury track record and in addition, we don't even know if Kobe will rescind his trade demand, which for me, would have to be a stipulation for trading for any big name player with the intent of playing alongside Kobe.

Yes, Bird is smart to try to get as much as he can for JO, but at the same time, the Lakers are smart for not giving into a rediculous trade.

Bynum been a bust so far? wtf are you talking about?

The guy averaged 2 mins/gm his rookie season. He is suddenly put in as starter last year with Kwame/Mihm out and actually showed some nice things. Late in the season, he kind of broke down...again, it was essentially his rookie season. He averaged 8/6 and 1.5 blocks in 22 mins/gm; you wanna call that a bust when the kid is only 19?

JO's first two years:
10.2 MPG (avg 4/3 and 0.6 blocks on 45%)
13.5 MPG (avg 4/3 and 1 block on 48%)

He was 19 and 20 yrs old

Bynum's first two years:
2.0 MPG (avg 2/2)
21.9 MPG (avg 8/6 and 1.6 blocks on 56%)

He was 18 and 19 yrs old.

Look if you want to predict that Bynum wont be as good as O'neal or will flat out not get anywhere...go ahead but to label him a bust at this stage is just ignorant.

There is an expression you can't teach 7 foot well Bynum is 7'1" and he is mobile, athletic, skilled and 19. He skipped college classes this year to work on his game so I think he is dedicated not to mention he is working with Kareem.

answer:
d) they should worker to expand the trade. Maybe Indy should include Shawn Williams and David Harrison. Or if Indy wants to dump one of their ugly contracts like Tinsley, maybe the Lakers also include VRad.

LO, Bynum, VRad, filler if necessary
for
JO, Tinsley, Williams, Harrison

something like that.

If the Lakers give up their second best player Odom and their future Bynum then they are becoming worse now and they have no future.

I suppose that depends on what one thinks of Oneal. Some would suggest that a frontline of Luke, JO, Kwame is a clear upgrade over Luke, Odom, Kwame.

As for the future....the future is NOW...either win it with Kobe NOW, or trade his ass.

I think the Lakers are crazy. Odom/Bynum for a superstar like Jermaine O'Neal would put the Lakers into 55+ win territory. With an inside/outside combination such as Jermaine O'Neal/Kobe Bryant, w/role players like Luke Walton, Kwame Brown, Derek Fisher, Jordan Farmer, Sasha Vujacic, and Mo Evans filling out the rotation around the SuperDuo, the Lakers would be serious playoff contenders.

I am just not sold on Andrew Bynum, at all. Not that he won't be good, I can definitely see him having a Kevin Duckworth level impact for them but I just cant imagine him ever being able to produce what JO does and JO will not only do it now, he will do it for the next several seasons as he is only 29 years old.
