Default Rockets sign Greek guard Vassilis Spanoulis

Houston Rockets General Manager Carroll Dawson announced today that the team has signed Greek guard Vassilis Spanoulis to a multi-year contract. The Rockets originally acquired the draft rights to Spanoulis (50th overall pick) from the Dallas Mavericks for the draft rights to Luis Flores (55th overall pick) on June 27, 2004.

Vasilis Spanoulis does not catch your eye when you first see him. In Greece he was never considered playing for a big team. He started getting noticed when he was playing in Marrousi, a good team that always reaches the playoffs in Greece but never manages to win a title. There coach Giannakis (Greeces NT manager) trained him a lot, made him strong and taught him how to become a clever basketball player. After a couple of seasons in Marrousi Spanoulis tryed his luck in a big Euroleague team. I remember everyone laughing with Panathinaikos (that has an amazing roster) as to why they invested on Spanoulis? After the NT last september won the European Championship with some good appearences from spanoulis (coming from the bench), he averaged the amazing 15ppg as a rookie in his first Euroleague season. (15ppg is great in europe, cause the game is shorter 40min and the defence is much tougher than in the NBA) Now he was regarded a star player in Europe.
He is an NBA type player, he has a lot of will and he will succed. As an adjustemnet year for the Rockets he will surely come off the bench, and he must improve his long range shot.

The reason 15pts is a lot in Europe is not only because the game is shorter, but because teams play so fast paced that players are substituted in and out of the game a lot. So players generally don't play more than 20-30 mins a game. The defense there is not better. The NBA has more of a defensive aspect to it, while European ball is more like Phoenix Suns ball.

Spanoulis is more of a slasher with a decent shot, but the range is limited (which is suprising because most europeans have great shooting touch, but no inside game). Hopefully he can develop that shot and his defensive ability. That would give the Rockets the perfect combo guard and he could hopefully replace Alston in the starting lineup.

Best Case Senario:
If Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker had a baby...it would be Spanoulis

Worst Case Senario:
If Carlos Arroyo and Dan Dickau had a baby...

I am so sick of people acting like Rafer sucks or does a bad job at the point.

I'm sure Rafer did look bad at the end of last season when Yao and Tracy were out, but who didn't?

Everyone looked bad. Everyone. Some had their moments, but everyone looked awful.

What do you expect from a team full of role players with no stars out there?

Everyone will look much better when our stars are back. Plus Shane Battier.

I don't think Rafer Alston is bad. But I do think Rafer would be more effective off the bench at some point. Right now he is our legit starter. I just have high hopes for our new point guard.
