Default Why did it take humans so long to develope what we have over the past 100+ years?

I mean lets take a look at this...

Look at all the great things we have in todays world, most of them werent around 100-125 years ago... So is our genereation just smarter than the previous ones? I mean, the humans have been around a VERY long time and we have only had cars since the early 1900's, computers since the 1970's or so. Its just a random thought I had a few days back but havent really come up with an answer just yet...

Anyone wanna give their opinion?

I think it took so long because for the longest time, man was focused on habitating the earth. Think about it. Throughout history, people have built empires and then they've been defeated. It's kind of just gotten to the point where there is no more land left to conquor. In doing so, man has had the ability to focus on improving the lives of their country and technology has increased with it. It's like people shifted their energy to other things besides war and became more civilized in the process. General advances in sciences like physics and chemistry have allowed much of progress that we've seen in the last 100 years. I think it took the renissance for that to happen. My take anyway.

One of the biggest reasons that technology has increased so much over the last hundred or so years is that language is no longer a barrier... Before, only people that spoke the same languages could work together to form ideas... Now, almost every business on Earth needs to be able to communicate in English. English has become a universal language and has been able to unite different ideas and lead to more advanced inventions.

what we has is the result of accumulated knowledge over centuries. Theories about how things work didn't just pop out of nowhere. They built upon previous work, generations of previous work.

The biggest difference is that during the last 100 years we were able to transfer information much faster. With the steam engine came trains that allowed faster travel time for people and info. Also radio transmitters etc. Now with satellites and the net we're just able to exchange info at faster rates than ever and we'll probably keep going at a faster rate than ever before.

human evolution was in all aspects a snowballing process.

it took man 100.000 years to discover and master fire. once he did, it took less than half of that amount to discover metal working. and so on...
it took just 150 years from discovery of electricity to the first computers.

every single technological and scientific advance makes it easier to discover another ones. the process accelerates itself.

Basically various forms of transportations have made the world a smaller place (railroads, airplanes, automobile, etc.). Thus, it became easier for people to explore natural resources, share information amongst each other and obviously it became easier to move from point A to point B.

And another reason is the development of cities. People have been moving out of farms and moving to cities where we become less self dependent and rely on others. Meaning we become master of one skill, and use the money we earn from that skill to buy things (food, shelter etc), instead of doing everything ourselves. We don't grow our own food, we don't make our own clothes and etc. And with this specialization, we are able to improve our current process and explore new ideas as well.

100 years ago we were more advance than 200 years ago, so it's all just relativitiy.
But if i have to pick a reason, that'd be production line AKA mass production.

all of our new "inventions" such as fiber optics, the integrated chip, etc are the result of reverse engineering alien technology found in roswell and other lesser known crash sites. it will be all for naught, however, because when our alien overlords return to reclaim this planet, we will show that we are still far behind in advancement compared to them.

new technology builds on old technology. as technology allowed less poeple to produce mroe food, this freed up others to engage in material pursuits (including new technology). Now, very little of the developed worlds pop is engaged in food production while many are engaged in improving/inventing technology based on older technology.
