Default MySpace Suicide Case

According to this MSNBC article, there was a 13 year old girl who ultimately committed suicide after apparently being "bullied" on MySpace.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22082080/

Basically, someone created a fake account, and posed as someone who was interested in the girl who later killed herself.

The Missouri prosecutor announced today there will be no file for criminal charges as there is no protection under the law for this type of social networking conduct.

_____

I can see why the mother is quite upset... however the burden should reside with the parents who allow or aren't paying enough attention to know their children have created an account or participate on a social networking site such as MySpace or Facebook.

Yes, the mother I'm sure needs closure... but I don't see MySpace being at fault here. I care nothing for MySpace or any other social networking site, but it's not their fault... at all. Again, just another classic case of parents not giving a sh*t until it’s too late.

I don't think you can just blame the parents...

They are at fault, but you can't assume that they knew thier
daughter was capable of suicide, because I'm sure they had no idea
that thier daughter was so depressed.

that's just sad.

(I didn't watch the video.)

That person and the creator of the fake account are both at fault here.

Don't you have to be 14 to be able to have MySpace if I'm not mistaken? If that's the case and her mom let her have one, then ain't nothing they can try to pin on the site. Not like there is anything they can blame on the site either way.

seroulsy though, what is a 13 year old depressed about? When I was 13 I was the happy kid in the world, Id give anything to be 13 again, age 13-17 were the best years of my life. Kids are phucking crazy these days and I blame the parents as much as I do society

i'm sad for their loss and all that, but that kid must have already had some sort of mental issue to begin with(depression or withdrawn from parents). you just don't take a normal everyday kid and have them hang themselves over some internet crap. she had to have shown some signs of depression somewhere down the line.

I read this, which all but states that the mom knew about it:

Quote:
Megan seemed upset
The next day, as Megan's mother headed out the door to take another daughter to the orthodontist, she knew Megan was upset about Internet messages. She asked Megan to log off. Users on MySpace must be at least 14, though Megan was not when she opened her account. A MySpace spokeswoman did not return calls seeking comment.

Quote:
Someone using Josh's account was sending cruel messages. Then, Megan called her mother, saying electronic bulletins were being posted about her, saying things like, "Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat."

Megan's mother, who monitored her daughter's online communications, returned home and said she was shocked at the vulgar language her own daughter was sending. She told her daughter how upset she was about it.

it's easy to say that but you're not depressed. it's a mental illness that u can't just turn on and off like a computer.

Well in that case, her mother probably didn't know there was an age limit on Myspace.

there are switches called zoloft, prozack, lithium ect. I do agree that dpresseion is a disease, a cousin of mine recentl ytook his own life and he was a pretty famous comedian that had millions of dollars.....I just cant comprehend how a 13 year old can be like that. More often than not something has to happen to a person to trigger their depression....and its the parents fault for not noticing their kid had problems
