Dude. You need to keep up. The Cavs didn't actually offer Varejo 1.2mil with the honest thought that he'd sign for that little. The 1 year, 1.2mil contract offer, was the league's "qualifying offer".
The Cavs had to offer him that as a minimum to keep him as a restricted free agent. It was basically just their way of saying they were going to start negotiations.
The only positive for Varejo accepting the 1.2 mil qualifying offer was he would have only had to play 1 year with the Cavs, and then he could be a free agent.
The 3 year deal Charlotte offered and Varejo now has to honor is less than the Cavs actual 3 year offer. The difference of course is the 3rd year is optional now, but none of this means the Cavs lost.
Now they can use Varejo now, while we're hurting with injuries, and in two years they can have him off the books. He clearly didn't want to stay in Cleveland without being paid an absorbent amount of money, so the best thing is to give him a chance to leave.
