20GB and 60GB have 99.9% backwards compatibility with both PSX and PS2 games.

80GB models have software emulation and will vary with each title. You must always have this - PS3 backwards compatibility status check Here you can check which titles will and will not work and what problems that will arise if running on an 80GB system.

40GB does not support backwards compatibility.

Slim PlayStation 2 will play 99.9% of the PSX library. Only games I am aware of that have issue on the PS2 are Toaplan Shooting Battle and Gradius Gaiden. Final Fantasy XI will not work on slims because of lack of HDD support.

A 60GB is your best option. Even a 20GB would be better than the current offerings.
