LA Times: Lakers reached out to CWebb and PJ Brown?
Quote:
The Lakers have 14 players under contract and can add one more if they wish. They have reached out to free agent Chris Webber and might contact P.J. Brown, each of whom are forward-center types who have not played this season.
"We're going to look at replacement players and if there is a way to get another big player that can help us win games," Kupchak said. "Can you replace Andrew? Of course not. The list is short on the kind of players that if you picked them up, they would play and help you win, but we'll look at it."

More detail on the article:

Quote:
With Andrew Bynum out eight weeks, team considers such free agents as Chris Webber, P.J. Brown and DJ Mbenga.
Thus, the Lakers are sifting through the free-agent bin and coming up with such names as Chris Webber, P.J. Brown and DJ Mbenga.
The Lakers were intrigued by Webber a year ago and have been in contact with his representatives. They think he fits the mold of a triangle-offense player -- good passer, good jump shot -- but are concerned about his physical condition.
Webber, who will be 35 in March, has not played since last season. He averaged 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 29.9 minutes in 61 games with Philadelphia and Detroit, but did not re-sign with the Pistons after their playoff run.
He has been contacted by other unspecified teams and will make up his mind this week, his agent said.
"We've talked to the Lakers organization several times prior to Andrew's unfortunate injury," said Webber's agent, Aaron Goodwin. "Obviously, they're a much better team with Andrew playing than they are without him. I think [Webber] will make a decision where he's going to play this week."
Unlike last season, a starting spot is not a prerequisite for Webber, Goodwin said.
"He wants to fit in," Goodwin said. "That's not an issue."
Goodwin also said Webber was in shape and would be "ready to go."
Re: LA Times: Lakers reached out to CWebb and PJ Brown?
any help at the 5 spot would be welcome. I think the Lakers have nothing to lose by trying out PJ Brown, Webber, or another Big to fill minutes at the 5.
I love having Ronny out there, but he's better off getting most of his minutes at the 4 spot and small minutes at the 5.

He has wanted this in the past, lets not forget that he was a starting spot away from joining us. The fact is we need help, someone needs to be signed, or you can count on Kwame playing 35 minutes a game.
Re: LA Times: Lakers reached out to CWebb and PJ Brown?
I don't see how signing them both would be out of the question. Webber for offense, Brown for defense. I am sure that neither of them are asking for much money and they would have to see this as a legitimate shot at a championship.

Yeah sure we can sign them both, only to find out that we actually only have 1 roster space instead of 2.

We've been asking for Ho Grant part 2, PJ is all that.
He'd be a great fit if we can talk him into returning.
We have about 1.6 of the MLE still available.
I could see PJ backing up Kwame for a few weeks, until he gets familiar with the system and in better shape, then moving to the starting 5, with Kwame off the bench.
When Drew returns, PJ can give us low post D and rebounding at either the 4 or the 5 off the bench (which most of us on this board have been saying is our greatest need). PJ is also quite effective offensively. Nice mid range jumper and a very good FT shooter.
He's be perfect, lets pray!
Webb would certainly be a decent addition as well, if PJ has no desire to come back.
Webber lacks PJ's D, but he's a solid rebounder and a very good passer (good fit for a big in the triangle).
I'd welcome him.
