Default Does Hack-A-Player Ever Work?

I simply do not understand this strategy. It never seems to work.

Sure, sometimes the percentages seem to be in your favor (a guy goes 3/8 or whatever) but the other costs outweigh the benefits:

- It always seems to bring the other team closer together

- It always makes the other team play harder to make up for the disrespect

- It ruins the flow for your own team

- It demonstrates to your own team a lack of confidence in their D

- When poor shooters go to the line, inevitably the rebounds are more difficult to judge and often times go back in the hands of the shooting team

I think the stategy is mostly a head game. If you're shooting in the gym, you should zero in on the hoop and get better the more you take.

But in a pressure game situation, the player could miss a few and get worse, and worse, to the point that they couldn't throw it into an ocean.

Otherwise it slows the game down, as Nelly said, but I don't know of any other coaches that really do it like him.

It's worked in the past that's for sure. I remember a few games where hack-a-Wallace (Ben) worked.

Plus it's a big **** YOU to the other team, and the Nets are probably one of the softest teams mentally.

Hell they look shook right now, but that's more because the Warriors are hitting 3s.

not really. If the ft shooters just can continue to go to the line and make 1/2 each time, you do it 4 trips down and they've scored 4pts which is still the equivalent of shooting 50%fg on 2 pointers.

"Hack-a-player" doesn't work in general not because of the things brought up, but for more tangible reasons.

1. You don't have unlimited number of fouls.
2. Putting the opposing team in the bonus early in a quarter is always bad for the defense. The player you hack may not be a good FT shooter, but the other players who benefit from being in the bonus should be.
3. There are very few players in the league who gets major minutes and suck at FT shooting enough for you to apply this method. Even a 60% FT shooter shooting at the line every possession is more efficient offense than just playing the offense normally. Which means "hack-a-Duncan" is not good philosophy, and he sucks at FTs by NBA standards.

I can see rare instances when you can do this. But generally, it just isn't feasible.

Hack a shaq seemed to work 90 percent of the time...the Hack a Wallace is useless.

You cant do it in NBA Live 2005 because you cant select what player you foul...You might foul Ray Allen who is rated 92 at free throws and even if you foul Shaquille O'neal he usually shoots a higher percentage than what he does in real life when you play Superstar mode, which is the mode i always play.

Sometimes i can come back from 10 points down with a minute 1:15 remaining using the hack theory, but i have to steal the inbounds pass and i feel like i'm cheating the game, the computer has earnt the lead and shouldn't have to succumb to my cheating ways just because theres a gliche in the game, i usually play out a loss in this situation especially if im playing as the Knicks or the Clippers, because its supposed to happen.

Your 2nd point is a good thing to bear in mind.

To address point 3: Of course it is a situational strategy, but even if there is a player that shoots 50% or below it still is not worth it.

The only time I would ever use it would be in a game where nothing else was working whatsoever.

boone shoots like 30% (he shot an airball in tonights game too), and he was killing the warriors on the boards, so i understand what nellie did tonight, it backfired though.

Hack-A-Ben.

Pat Riley’s team was already winning in the dying minutes of Game 1. Instead of playing on and let fate control the outcome of the game, he let Ben Wallace’s free throw dictate it.

It was 2:28 remaining in Game 1 when the Heat, up by nine points, called a timeout. Then when the game resumed, we saw Shaquille O’Neal foul Ben Wallace, leaving the Pistons with virtually no chance of scoring, not even a single point.

And they didn’t even have to play defense to do it. Ben Wallace’s shooting at the foul line is the best defense from Pat Riley’s cheap tactic.

Jeezus…

Wallace promptly bricked two free throws, although one could point out it was a moral victory that both shots at least hit the rim.

That makes him two for his past 19 from the line, and he’s now a miserable 22.2 percent for the playoffs. Yes, an NBA player is shooting 22.2 percent on free throws — essentially making him a safer bet to miss a shot from the line than the average pro is to make it. - ESPN

Hack-a-player will work if you do it while the other team is missing free-throws. Once he starts hitting it, you should stop right away. unlike what happened before when big ben and shaq was already hitting their free throws and the other team kept on fouling them.

Any player, even a career 50% ft shooter will get into some kind of rhythm and starts hitting their free throws maybe around 70-75% w/c makes hack-a-player not worth it

Heat beat the Pistons in the 2006 ecf because of the whole hack-a-ben thing, so yeah it works.

Yes, Riles killed the Pistons with it in '06. It was extremely frustrating to watch.
