Arrow Josh Smith - what do you pay this guy?

i'll start this thread off by saying that he is NOT a franchise player. he's damn good but not a player that can lead your team through the playoff trenches and stuff like that.

but DAMN... he fills a stat sheet:

18 ppg
8 rpg
3.5 apg
2 spg
3.5 bpg

he only shoots 43% from the field and he turns the ball over more than three times a game.

so do you pay him like a franchise player? or do you think atlanta might be able to get away with only paying him $10 mill per on average?

Smith, Deng and Iguodala will all get similar deals IMO. Maybe slightly more than what Kevin Martin got this past offseason.

I wouldn't make him my franchise player. Talent isn't everything. There's leadership and work ethic.

Nene makes $10 mill per, so no, I think he'll get a max deal.

Pretty tough criticism for a guy who has improved each year and is still crazy young. He's also never been to the playoffs due to the youth of his team so we aren't sure what he can do come playoff time. You need more then one guy to lead a team through the playoffs and I definitely think he can be one of Atl's key guys in the postseason. Most good players average a lot of TOs as well and Smoove has shown signs this year of cutting back the 3's to help his FG%. His FT% is also better.

To me there isn't much of a difference between them. I could see a case being made to pick any 3 of them. It's just a matter of what your team needs. Smith's offensive game is way too ugly for me to say he is "way" more valuable than them. I'm still wondering how he would do with a decent PG though.

This is an admitted fantasy angle, but in Jan. he's like 20/8/4 with close to 2 stls and 3.4 blks....on 48% FG.

He is twice as good as Deng and I would actually rather build around him then Iggy. I think Iggy is the product of being a forced number 1 option then much of anything else.

Kevin Martin's contract was very reasonable actually and it was mostly based on him having just one good year (in a contract year). He's lived up to it thus far, but Smith has shown a bit more for a longer period with solid improvement.

where is he in the contractual process? Is this summer his qualifying offer? or did they already provide that (if so, how much did they offer)?

he's an RFA this offseason i believe... so they merely have to extend a qualifying offer... if they're smart they are working on an extension right now.

well, anyway, I would offer him $11m per. If he rejects that offer (like Ben Gordon and Deng did), then, the next summer, Atl has the right to match any offer he receives.

Joe Johnson will make 14.2 and 14.9 over the next 2 seasons, respectively. Josh won't get more than Joe will so I could see as much as 11 million.

As somewhat similar players Gerald Wallace only got 7.5 though, which I think just about everyone was shocked at how low it was.

edit: **** bleedin just said 11mill right before me.. damnit

If you could pair him with a really good offensive closer he could the #2 guy on a championship team. As talented as he is I don't the see the leadership, or ability to finish big games, that would allow him to be the franchise player on a top team.

That said I would give up anyone but Bosh to get him on the Raptors. If they would take TJ straight up (I'm not sure if the contracts allow this) I would take it in a heart beat. Hell, I'd even throw in some picks and Jamario.
