Default Shaq is the Most Underrated Finals MVP

really, just take a look at the numbers:

Quote:
2000 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers
Averaged 38.0 points, 16.7 rebounds and 2.67 blocks

Quote:
2001 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers
Averaged 33.0 points, 15.6 rebounds and 3.40 blocks

Quote:
2002 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers
Averaged 36.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.75 blocks

those are arguably the best numbers ever out up in the finals in the modern era, yet people always talk about MJ's finals, or Magic or Birds.
The only finals series that even compares is the one that MJ put up 41/8.5/6. 38/17 is still better than this, though.

I just thought I'd make that thread, following the TD vs. Shaq thread.

The crazy thing about those numbers is that they are averages. What all-star or borderline all-star perimeter player can't win multiple titles with that type of Shaq Diesel?

Shaq was definitely working hard, crashing the boards in the 03 and 04 postseason. It's just a shame his touches were starting to diminish, which is why they didn't win those years.

The 2001 is specifically amazing because he did it against Dikembe, who had just won DPOY. I mean when we say about Dalls "Who is going to stop Shaq", in 2001 the best and only answer was Deke.

Not just Deke - there are alot of defensive centers who stand alone on an island v. Shaq and get crushed - that 76er team was a strong interior defensive squad.

Not only did he beat them, he ate Deke up.

From Juvenile's link:

Quote:
1979 -- Dennis Johnson, Seattle
Averaged 9.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.9 steals per game in the Sonics’ 4-1 victory over the Washington Bullets.

Anyone care to explain more on what happened in these finals? Those don't look like MVP status player numbers...Was it a really low scoring finals? I guess if we're talking about worst MVPs, Chauncey Billups has a contender.

Jordan:

1991 Finals: 31.2 pts, 6.6 reb, 11.4 ast, 2.8 stls, 1.4 blks (55.8% FG)
1992 Finals: 35.8 pts, 4.8 reb, 6.5 ast, 3.5 stls (52.6% FG)
1993 Finals: 41.0 pts, 8.5 reb, 6.3 ast, 2.3 stls (51% FG)

Dominant. The '91 and '93 lines are two of the three best in the last 18 years in the Finals imo along with Shaq's 2000 Finals averages.

The thing is...none of those teams Shaq met in the finals had anything servicable at center. And he was in his prime. The Diesel in his prime pretty much chewed up and spit out everyone.

Nobody is mentioning the 95 finals where Shaq was close to getting back-to-back triple doubles in games 3 and 4 and was unstoppable in GM1 (especially in the 1st half).

Since Shaq didn't have any game-winners or "miracle story games" in the finals people tend to overlook him when they talk about the playoff/finals greats.

Probably since he got outplayed by The Dream, and got swept.

I wouldn't say he was outplayed by The Dream...I bet you anything he would have loved to take any of Nick Anderson's last 4 free throws in game 1.

The Rockets were clutch in that series (hence the name).
