Default O.J Mayo

The ever popular nbadraft.net currently has O.J Mayo slipping down to 10th in their mock draft. Just a matter of months ago he was in and around the number 2/3 picks in most mocks. What is the reason/s behind his drop down? Is it character issues? Or other reasons?

Just curious.

There is already an ongoing discussion of nbadraft.net's Mayo hatred

I saw a couple games of him earlier in the season. From what I saw, he went out of the offense and jacked up a lot of misses. That's part of the reason. The other part is that he cannot physically impose his will on another player like Kobe or LeBron unless he's playing the point, and if he's playing the point you're screwed cuz you ain't getting the ball. He's like Stephon Marbury, maybe Gilbert Arenas at best, IMO.

mayo is really really good

people try to talk him down- but as a nugs fan im scared to see him on seattle maybe

on usc he is the biggest of all of their 1,2,3's wich i dont think helps him

if he was a second option to durant they would be scary

oj wants to be a pg iverson doesnt so we will just take him on the nugs-

Co-sign. It could hurt his draft stock, but he could really improve his game, and maybe win a National Championship. USC's got some really good players.

Cosign, maybe another 2yrs

he's got talent
but if he jumps it's gonna be a big mistake.
I've watched him play and as a Pt Guard he could be a problem but he plays like a 2 guard.

If he develops he could be a more athletic Chauncey Billups
but if he jumps he's gonna be a disaster, he needs to learn the nuances of the game and the pt guard position.

His biggest problem is resisting the urge to jump pro while his stock is high and he can still go lottery. Someone needs to pull him aside and pt to Steve Francis and Stephon and tell him if he jumps that's were he's headed.

Mayo might be the most nitpicked draft prospect that I have ever seen. Seems as if the guy can't do any right in the view of many.

He drops anywhere past 5 in this draft and he's an instant steal.

Mayo went from being a bit overrated before the season, to way underrated now as the home stretch of the season nears. Mayo is a scorer. He is not a PG like so many people called him before the year. People are finally realizing that as a scorer, he can't do it every night. AI, Kobe, LeBron, they all kill their teams at times because they take bad shots. Mayo is no different. The big difference is that his season is half as long, and with all the hype about him being the guard version of Durant, every USC loss seems to be magnified. And lets be real, outside of the opening night loss against Mercer, this team has lost to #1 Memphis, #2 Kansas, #6 Washington State, #20 Stanford, and a decent Cal team.

The one good thing about Mayo is that he bounces back. He is blamed for everything that goes bad at USC. What about the lack of improvement of Taj Gibson? What about the fact that this team's 6 man rotation is all freshman or sophomores? With all this, they have won three in a row, including a win over UCLA, and are Jay Bilas' team on the rise.

The bottom line is that Mayo will go anywere from 1st or 2nd (not very likely) down to 5th or 6th. He is a big time scoring talent. In todays NBA, scoring wins games. The big issue with him will be what team he lands with. If he ended up with San Antonio, Pop would probably bring him off the bench for years, but he would stay in line, and become the type of scorer he can be. If he ends with Isiah and the Knicks, he probably won't develop into the scorer he could be.

Whatever struggles he's had this year are more than likely due to having USC's ridiculously slow offense around him... a quicker, more dynamic running game would clearly be more conducive to the kid's style of play.

I respect and enjoy nbadraft.net, but there is no way the WV native Mayo falls out of the top 5. He is atleast the 2nd best player in college basketball, and if he was on a better team that would be obvious. His name alone will sell a ton of tickets, and that will play a factor. He does have to work on his shot selection, but that is a problem that can be fixed.

Mayo's got talent, but he's also got an attitude. I would pick him at 4-6. Definitely not #1, maybe #2 if New York's picking, because they're dumb enough to draft him, possibly at three. I think he'll end up in the top three this year. Someone will want him.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks Mayo has a bad attitude though. He may be cocky, but how many NBA players aren't?

The biggest problem is that he is a score first and second guy. But he still has the ability to make good passes. He just needs the coaching to shape his game into a player that can take his natural ability and play with the other 4 guys are the court. Right now USC seems to have limited his touches and it has resulted in wins. With good coaching, you can give him his touches and not worry about him taking bad shots and forgetting there are other players out there with him. Just because he looks to shoot before he does get other guys involved doesn't mean he has an attitude problem.

And one thing that should be pointed out is that Gordon averages 2 more points a game than Mayo. Mayo has 1 more assist a game however. The math is simple to see that they produce the same amount of points for their team. And who has Indiana played? They have played Xavier and Southern Illinois. I'm not saying I would take Mayo before Gordon, but Mayo doesn't deserve all this hate. I also have to add that Gordon doesn't seem to be the same after he missed that game against Kentucky. He hasn't really had any huge games since then, while before that he had a few big games.
