Default "The C's"

I often hear the Celtics referred to as "the C's". Obviously the C represents Celtics but what is the origin of this reference? I don't hear the Lakers referred to as "the L's" for example, so I am curious.

Now that this forum is a bit more active for the playoffs perhaps someone can answer my original question....Why are the Celtics referred to as "The C's"? What is the origin of that moniker?

i think it's just easier

like knickerbockers = knicks

athletics = a's

although you aren't saving much time by saying "c's" since celtics is only 2 syllables
