Read Paul Shirley's ESPN blog. He sums up pretty well the way that a ton of professional athletes' careers end. And he's seven feet tall, something that has carried him PAST when his athletic ability has started to fail. He is now a seven-foot, three-point-shooting nothing playing for month-to-month contracts wherever on Earth that teams will hire him. And he's still at the high end as far as athetic earning power for someone with his qualifications goes. He mentions in his latest post (about the probable end of his basketball career) some names of people like him, pro athletes who are living a similar transient lifestyle. Toby Bailey is one of them. In case you don't remember him, he was DESTROYING the NCAA tournament as a freshman (which ended up being the high point of his career).
My point is this. The assistant coach of my high school football used to be the third string wide receiver on the Bears. He had a career-ending knee injury at 23. He tried to play pro sports after that, on a knee that kept tearing itself worse and worse with every comeback. He's probably making
$25k a year now. He walks with the most painful limp you'll ever see, especially if you catch him walking when you think no one is looking. And his childhood was as bleak as any porn star's. Poverty, abuse, neglect. But he is proud of his success. He overcame his brutal past to some form of a normal life. I would imagine that a porn star who brought him/herself up from the brink of hell would be pretty proud of what they'd accomplished, even if they had no control over their bowels and had to wear a diaper.
