Default When did the MVP award become so important??

It seems to me that the MVP award really started picking up steam when Nash got his first, and by his second it was the #1 NBA discussion topic. This year its definitely at an all-time high, IŽd bet money that more people can name the top 4 MVP candidates than can name the top 4 NBA teams record wise. Maybe it was because there was no internet forums, or internet for that matter, but I canŽt remember the MVP being such a big deal in the past. Why do people feel so strongly about this award.... I guess its just something to talk about.

that's how the nba is marketed... by individual athletes. media loves it, i dont know why because West playoff seeding/race is more important and exciting.

Ever since Jordan, the NBA has worked hard on hyping up individual players. Great marketing strategy. Everybody's on the lookout for the next Jordan. Except Jordan made himself before the media took notice...unlike players now.

That was after people already knew how good Jordan was. He didn't get a shoe contract before he stepped foot on the court like Telfair or LeBron.

If that's true it's because the West is so tight... but here goes...

Celtics, Pistons, Lakers, Hornets
Bryant, Paul, Garnett, James

I don't know if that's a shot at me or what?

I've probably had less than 200 posts in the year 2008 and haven't followed the NBA as a whole that closely this year.

The MVP award lost ALL of it's luster and prestige when Nash (twice) and Dirk won the award the past 3 seasons. It's just ANOTHER award as far as I'm concerned.

I think the topic of MVP is has drawn more controversy rather than being more important.
