Default Kobe: Kupchak goes from F to A+

Quote:
The Lakers aren't even in the Rocky Mountains yet, but they're already on a high, having comfortably won the opener of their first-round playoff series with the Denver Nuggets.

They stood up to the Nuggets' strong-armed approach in Game 1, displayed a passing attack with a whiff of Showtime, and were presented a day later with some positive big-picture thoughts by Kobe Bryant.

Bryant continued on Monday to compliment Mitch Kupchak, saying the Lakers' general manager had gone from an "F to an A-plus," and also added some colorful texture to his thoughts on the franchise.

"I love our team here," Bryant said. "I love what we're doing here. We have a great relationship, we have great chemistry. We have all the pieces in here to make a run for a long time."

Bryant said that he was "absolutely" open to finishing his career with the Lakers and that he had not thought about terminating his contract, although he declined to speculate when asked if he would indeed opt out after next season.

Bryant, 29, could terminate his current deal, a move that would leave two years and a hefty $47.8 million on the table.

Unlike last spring, though, when Bryant said he wanted to leave the Lakers, the 10-time All-Star could rip up his current deal after next season simply to re-sign with the team for more money. If he then signed a new five-year contract with the Lakers after next season, his first-year salary would be about $22.3 million in 2009-10, with annual raises of up to $2.34 million.

Bryant said he was content with the present-day Lakers.

"I've always wanted to be here, but I just felt like I was in a position where I didn't really have a choice," Bryant said of the tumult last year. "They wanted to go in an opposite direction. My legs aren't as young as they used to be. But I love the weather, I love my '63 drop-top Impala. I love the 405 and I love my guys."

Bryant openly questioned the direction of the Lakers franchise during the off-season, but Monday he added another set of Kupchak kudos to a string of them tracing back to the team's acquisition of Pau Gasol in February.

"He believed in the draft picks that he made, and he had the patience to sit on the Kwame [Brown] piece and pull off the coup de grace and shift a couple of players out of here that got along extremely well with the group," Bryant said.

Bryant then elaborated on why he gave Kupchak a low grade in recent seasons.

"It was just rough because being here for three years and not having anything done, it got to the point that it was extremely frustrating," Bryant said. "The talks that we had positively about trying to do things and be more aggressive and still nothing gets done, and then my best friend [Caron Butler] gets shipped out of here without me knowing, so it was just beyond frustration. Then [Butler] is an NBA All-Star and that really didn't sit well. . . . It takes pressure sometimes to make a diamond."

I thought he was going to go into an "I love LA" verse...

I wonder if he will want even more money for his next contract? For me, with all the bank I already had, I would want to give the team cap space room to help build the team even stronger.... heck, if I were him, I'd take a reduction in pay to keep this steam roller going. The CBA is the biggest inhibitor to team success and Kobe could make a huge difference. Then again, I guess for most, greed is good.

wow good questions as always socal... not sure what kobe will do..i can see him getting a new contract along the same lines of his current, one that ends up more like an extension then one that looks like a whole new deal....
or even possibly one that pays alot up front for a year or two then tapers off which would help the lakers more so down the road then one that was scaled back to start but then grew yearly... i think the second type is best for all, it gives kobe the money a player like him deserves yet allows the lakers room to keep this team together over alonger period of time which would also benefit kobe

Imagine for a brief moment if you will... if Kobe said "I will do a 5 year deal for $50M."

Can you imagine what the Lakers could do with that (presuming other elements of the CBA don't factor in)?

lol i don't think he'd be quite the accomodating he has 3 years left that total 68 million now... so i'd say something like 6 years which would take him to 35... 6 years for 100 million tha works out to 16 million per, but could be structured like

23 next year 22 the following and 20 the third then 11 per from there on out, he gets his money, the lakers get some wiggle room down the road

That would be amazing. With him taking a pay cut like that, could you imagine the kind of piece (or pieces) we could get to add to this team? Odom, Bryant, Gasol, Bynum, Free Agent X... wow.

Of course, it could also help us free up salary to sign bynum and gasol to extentions

It would be awesome if he could do that. They could pick up another big free agent w/ that. I hope he at least takes a little pay cut. Maybe get around the 15 mil range, give us a lttle money to pick up a lower level free agent

If Kobe takes a larger contract worth more money, I am not going to be very happy. Kobe already knows that Bynum's contract ends after next summer and so does Odom's. The least he can do is take about a $2 million cut per season and keep those on the table like what Duncan did to keep the team together. Hopefully, Kobe does the right thing and doesn't take the selfish way out. If he does, I am seriously going to lose a lot of respect for him.

Maybe its just me but some of these quotes from Kobe are pissing me off lol.

"Goes from an F to an A+"? So he was an F before? Come on Kob, at least give him credit for not making a trade for the sake of making a trade and landing us someone like JO or trading Bynum off or something? I mean if we are at this point right now, he must have been doing something right back then (Patience with the young guys, not dismantling the team, etc)...sometimes the best move is one you dont make.

And no need to bring back some of the Caron stuff or that "pressure to make a diamond" quote

This is where his "ego" kicks in and he'll still make it as if he had no faults.

Im going to give mitch an A+++++ because he was able to do all of this after kobe managed to single handedly kill all our leverage in the summer time.

whats mitch supposed to say to Kobe? Thanks?

However I am VERY pleased to hear that he wants to be a Laker for life

I'm hoping they do the contract extension before his contract expires or he opts out or anything. Lock him up asap
