Default Re: If Kevin Garnett Was A Team Player

For the moment I don't see the Celtics have any problems with their teams.

Why would he continue to sign contract extensions paying him over $20 Million per season

garnetts new contract does not kick in until 2009 2010 at which point he'll be making 16 mill the first season 18.8 the following and ending in 21.2 per
that's several million less than the current 23.7 hes making this year and the 24.7 he'll be making next year under his current contract from the wolves...
if he had just had his current contract extended out with the max pay raises he'd have been making near 28 million plus per year by the end of the extention

so in essence he has taken a sizable paycut, in two years hell take roughly a 8 million dollar drop in salary and when compared to what he could have got when its all done he'll make roughly 35 million less.

that being said, even if he played for free the celtics would be over the cap for several years..

lastly asking a plyer to take less (which he did) is not how you run a basketball team, it's not up to the player to make life easier for the team, if you want to compete in the NBA you have to pay the talent their true value, because there are dozens of teams that would love to get a hold of garnett and would happily pay him more to play in their city...

Default Re: If Kevin Garnett Was A Team Player

Why doesnt the owner take a paycut and use that for the damn luxury tax when signing a new player?

That is in fact the second consecutive time hes taken faaaaaaar less than he could. He(like Shaq) has a huge contract which is older than the current version of the salary cap meaning there is no limit to how much money he can be paid. If all he asked for was the max increases per year after his contract ended in 04(or was it 05?) hed have been making more than 30 million a year with about 12% yearly increases. KG could realistically be making more than 40 million dollars a year eventually if he demanded it. He made like 28 million the last year of his contract and had he asked for the max extension he would have made more than 30 the next year and ended up waaaaaaaaaaaaaay over that. He could have been in the area of a 180+ million dollar deal I believe. Hes taken paycuts larger than anyone in NBA history. And they arent even really needed all the time because most of his teams are over the cap by more than his salary. Meaning if he made no money at all they still have only the MLE to work with. He contributes to the tax but thats about it. THe Celtics have 52 million in salary aside from KG.

Hes not really a bad deal at all. Hes one of 6 players who made a rounded off 20 million or more this year and only 2 of them were even all stars(KG and Iverson).
