Default Jay Williams works out for the Nets

Jay Williams, whose arduous climb back to the NBA has taken three years out of a once-promising career, apparently is ready to play again -- and the Nets want him to play in New Jersey. Williams' manager, Kevin Bradbury, told The Star-Ledger yesterday the Nets have invited the Plainfield native to take part in their training camp in six weeks. The point guard is "seriously considering" their invitation despite the lack of job security, Bradbury said. Newark Star-Ledger

"He's been working out every day with the Nets' coaches for a couple of weeks at their practice facility," Bradbury said yesterday. "But he hasn't accepted the invitation yet. That might not happen for a few more weeks, because he is considering other offers." The offer Williams wants most, of course, would be one that includes guaranteed money -- which the Nets cannot give him because they will soon have 15 players under contract, the maximum allowed by the NBA. Newark Star-Ledger

One report from a Western Conference assistant coach was typical: "He's not quick enough," the coach said. "That was his edge, and he's lost that. He's almost an ordinary 6-foot guy." Newark Star-Ledger

Nets president Rod Thorn was unavailable to comment last night. The team could free up some guaranteed salary for Williams, but that would require that they first buy out Jeff McInnis, whose $3.6 million deal makes him untradeable. If Williams gets any cash up front at all, he may give the Nets a hometown discount, based on his remarks from his workout in June. Newark Star-Ledger

After working out with 10 NBA teams, Jay Williams still doesn't have a offer of guaranteed money for this season. But he does have an offer to join the Nets training camp when it opens in October. And Nets GM Ed Stefanski says the Plainfield native is giving the Nets "strong indications" he will accept. Although many teams have saluted his courage coming back from a career-threatening motorcycle accident, they all appear worried about how much of his old quickness remains.

it would be a good signing for the Nets. They can use Jay as the 2nd or 3rd string point guard. I just hope he doesnt expect major minutes while Marcus learns the game in his rookie season.
