Yeah, those damn meaningless regular season games. Why do they even play them, I wonder? They serve no point whatsoever, down with the meaningless regular season!

Shaq was the number 2 option in 2006 with Miami but a damn good one at 20 and 9.

Shaq was easily the main reason the Lakers won though.

Here's what Shaq and the Lakers did during the games Kobe missed from the 1999-2000 season to the 2001-2002 season.
25-6
31.7 ppg, 12.7 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.9 bpg, 59.5 FG%

Here are both of their stats during the 3peat.

Shaq

1999-2000
Regular Season- 29.7 ppg, 13.6 rpg, 3.8 apg, 3.0 bpg, 57.4 FG%
Playoffs- 30.7 ppg, 15.4 rpg, 3.1 apg, 2.4 bpg, 56.6 FG%
Finals- 38.0 ppg, 16.7 rpg, 2.3 apg, 2.7 bpg, 61.1 FG%

2000-2001
Regular Season- 28.7 ppg, 12.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.8 bpg, 57.2 FG%
Playoffs- 30.4 ppg, 15.4 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.5 bpg 55.5 FG%
Finals- 33.0 ppg, 15.8 rpg, 4.8 apg, 3.4 bpg, 57.3 FG%

2001-2002
Regular Season- 27.2 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.0 bpg, 57.9 FG%
Playoffs- 28.5 ppg, 12.6 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.5 bpg, 52.9 FG%
Finals- 36.3 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.8 bpg, 59.5 FG%

3 seasons combined
Regular Season- 28.6 ppg, 12.4 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.6 bpg, 57.5 FG%
Playoffs- 29.9 ppg, 14.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.4 bpg, 55.2 FG%
Finals- 35.9 ppg, 15.2 rpg, 3.5 apg, 3.2 bpg, 59.5 FG%

Kobe

1999-2000
Regular Season- 22.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 4.9 apg, 1.6 spg 46.8 FG%
Playoffs- 21.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.5 spg, 44.2 FG%
Finals- 15.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.0 spg, 36.7 FG%

2000-2001
Regular Season- 28.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 5.0 apg, 1.7 spg, 46.4 FG%
Playoffs- 29.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 6.1 apg, 1.6 spg, 46.9 FG%
Finals- 24.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.4 spg, 41.5 FG%

2001-2002
Regular Season- 25.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.5 spg, 46.9 FG%
Playoffs- 26.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.4 spg, 43.2 FG%
Finals- 26.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 5.3 apg, 1.5 spg, 52.9 FG%

3 seasons combined
Regular Season- 25.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.6 spg, 46.7 FG%
Playoffs- 25.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 4.9 apg, 1.5 spg, 44.7 FG%
Finals- 24.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.3 spg, 42.5 FG%

Shaq outscored Kobe during the regular season, the playoffs and the Finals every single season of that 3peat while drawing more double teams and being among the leagues best rebounders/shot blockers.

So yeah I'd say Shaq was the main reason. I'm not saying Kobe wasn't ahuge part of those teams but Shaq was the main reason without question.

Kobe really does not say anything publically about Shaq that is negative anymore... perhaps he's learned that lesson for himself to keep his trap shut.

Interestingly, who is more polarizing - Kobe vs. MJ -or- Kobe vs. Shaq....

back on topic, bryant is going to have some major fire in his eyes playing PHX next year.

Too bad he cant bring the fire out when the nba title is on the line. settling for jumpers and rarely attacking for most of the finals...

that was about boston's defense. not even lebron could penetrate the way he usually does.

boston was a much better team overall. with bynum back i would guess it'll be more even.

This is old news, even Kobe himself has said he's was the number 2 guys during that era. (recently in one of the interviews during the playoffs).

One thing about Shaq's final's numbers though, he was a beast in part because the eastern teams we played were usually undersized to handle him. It's also interesting to see his numbers fall every year which reflected his mindset.

Finally if you take the two guy's numbers and combine them, it's amazing how heavily that team depended on those two guys. Almost 60 pts a game 17 rebounds about 9 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. That's almost half (more than half for scoring) of the totals a team typically puts up in every category in a game (on average).
