I completely blame Shaq for Derek Anderson's injury plagued career. Most Spur fans should remember the playoff game where Shaq landed on Anderson's leg and he hasn't been the same since.

Derek did have injury problems when he was on the Blazers as well. That was before the Shaq thing.

Ha, I didn't. I was looking at a Mitch Richmond mix, and under 'related videos' I saw "Derek Anderson mix" and I like "what?", and went from there.

But yeah, dude had some ups.

Makes no sense. He was on the Spurs when the Shaq thing happened (Shaq also landed on his ankle in Derek's second season as a Blazer, first game of the season) and Portland signed Derek Anderson from the Spurs where he was an explosive scorer.

DA's injuries were always some freak incidents. He had some bad luck.

Yeah, I think he could still be a problem if it wasn't for his lower body injuries.

DA and Ron Mercer were a blast to watch at Kentucky. That was when I still watched college basketball, before everyone was a 1 yr wonder and done.

A lot of people consider Mercer a bust, but I think he still had a pretty damn solid career.

To me the craziest part of Derek Anderson's story is that the knee injury he suffered his final year at Kentucky actually sapped a significant portion of his athleticism.

You're right. I mixed up Texas teams. I was thinking Anderson was on the Spurs after the Blazers, but it was the Rockets that he went to after us.

DA used to be one of my favorite players, way back when he was on Ohio State and then when he played for Kentucky.

There have been athletes around forever. It just used to be that athleticism wasn't the determining factor in who got drafted or who got playing time. Lots of athletic guys were either out of the league in a few years or got limited minutes in the NBA from the mid-80's to late 90's. One of the best known such players was Stacey Augmon, who could get head level with the rim. He could actually play some, though, and was a defensive role player for many years. Michael "Yogi" Stewart was another -- just tremendously athletic, yet never got PT after his rookie year. Darrin Hancock was another.

Check Hancock out here at the 42 second and 1:37 marks:

Or here at around 4:20-4:30 (he catches the alley oop):
