For this season at least. His contract also gives them enough space to do some spending when Haywood, Thomas, and Daniels come off the books. Even if Arenas hadn't signed with the Wizards, they wouldn't have been able to get a player for over $10 million (assuming the cap is going to be around $59 million), which means they wouldn't have been able to land one of the impact players anyway.

The Wiz could either be boom or bust. They are committed to their
big 3 (Gilbert, Caron, and Jamison) being successful. The ability
of Arenas to be a better teammate will determine how far this
team goes. As it is, I dont see them being better than a 5th
seed. And if things go bad, this team is handcuffed by the
salary cap like the Mavs and Suns in the west are.

Wow. I haven't seen anyone doing what he did yet. Regardless of what people think of his worth, I applaud him for doing something that hardly any other guy at his age would do just to help out the team.

The money he left on the table does nothing except shave $2mill off the already way over the cap Wizards team. I guess he saved them from getting more tax. But really, it didn't do anything to help improve the team......$111 or $127 is pretty much the same in terms of adding more players

The Wiz I fear for them are now destined to never really compete for a title. Gil is a great player, but they haven't been able to be a serious threat with their 'big 3' healthy....so unless their young guys really take off, probably be 5 more years of the same story for the Wiz....1st or 2nd round exits.

Arenas/Butler/Jamison were only all together for one playoff series...

Everyone pointing to the early exits has failed to mention that the group has never been healthy except for the first time the Cavs/Wiz met in the first round. Also, lets not be naive and compare the Caron Butler of that series to the Caron Butler now, not even the same player. Granted, other teams have improved as well, but the injuries can not be ignored.

Wow. Talk about overpaying. Probably the worst signing of the offseason. Arenas just isn't worth that much.

NBA teams get more viewers and ticket holders and hence money by winning, not by having stars.
