Default Jumaine Jones to sign with Suns.

Quote:
If you figured the Suns were just going about the business of filling out the bench in August, think again.

Veteran swingman Jumaine Jones, an unrestricted free agent, is expected to arrive in Phoenix today and have a guaranteed one-year contract with the Suns completed by Thursday.

Jones would be no seat filler. He'd be much more than the Suns roster's 13th player. He is coming off a career season with Charlotte, his fifth team in seven NBA seasons since leaving Georgia after his sophomore season. Jones, 27, had a career-high 42 starts last season for a 26-win Bobcats team, averaging 10.5 points (also a career best) and 4.9 rebounds in 27.5 minutes per game. advertisement

The Suns had Jones on their radar since the free-agent-contact window opened July 1.

Now, with Jones unexpectedly still available, Phoenix can have him for a price that keeps the team under the luxury-tax threshold.

Jones is a wing player who, at 6 feet 8 and 218 pounds, also likely would fit in also as a power forward in the Suns system.

He is a slasher and career 35 percent three-point shooter who plays the transition game well.

Also important for Phoenix, he adds another quality defender in addition to last month's prominent free-agent signing - backup point guard Marcus Banks.

The Suns likely will not sign any more players to guaranteed deals this summer. Phoenix leaves for training camp in Italy on Sept. 29.

very good signing. He will bring his 3 point shooting to Phoenix and put it to good use.

Wow, I knew they were going to sign another player, but I really expected a scrub. Jones is a good, quality player, who won't see many minutes, but can help when he does play, or can step in if someone goes down with injury.

Good, cheap signing for the Suns. Adds depth to the bench, which we all know is something we know we can use.

Thanks for the article Amare32.

Unhappy

Breaks my heart to see my Bobcats let go of Jones. Guess I'll be watching more Suns games! The Bobcats loss is the Suns gain.

Excellent signing for the Suns. Jones is an athletic, great shooting, highflying swingman that adds some great depth to our line-up. He will fit right in with our offense and this makes are bench so much better. Although I wanted the Suns to add some depth at the front-court, this signing is way better than nothing.

Now I am even more excited for this up and coming season!

The Burke approves!!!! But has a few questions.

Will he be playing PF or SF for us???

Will he be taking away from the other JJ's minutes? If not who's minutes?

Why do the Suns pick up so many DAMN plays with the innitials JJ? This is getting much to confusing to me!

Is he athletic enough to keep up with the Suns?

Does this mean Sean Marks will never leave the bench (if so thank GOD, I dont like him)?

Please, I would love it if sombody did the breakdown to show where he fits in our lineups? This is my guess but I am probably wrong

Amare / Kurk / Burke
Diaw / Jumain / Marks
Matrix / Jones
Bell / Barbosa / Piatkowski
Nash / Banks

I realize that in reality Marion and Diaw are interchangable at PF and SF

I like it. JJ really is a SF, but he is big and tough and could easily be a Marion-type PF. He is a decent rebounder and he is a great 3 point shooter when he is on.

Plus the Suns always need as many players with the initials JJ as they can get.

i like it cuz this just gives us another strong body to add to our very interchangeable front court and he's a great defender as well.
personally i think he will show more consistency than james jones and get more minutes, but once again great pickup and if injuries plague us again we wont have to worry as much

This is a good signing for Jumaine and the Suns. Plus they got a total bargain on him...here's what I think the Phoenix lineup will look like...

PG-Nash/Banks
SG-Bell/Barbosa/Pike
SF-Diaw/Jones
PF-Marion/Jones/
C-Stoudamire/Thomas/Burke

..i wouldn't count on Burke or Pike to get much playing time though unless injuries happen...
