Excel as giagantic players on both ends of the court, but now its seems as if the 5 spot is being took over by oversized power fowards, or centers who are are so offensive minded first, then to slow and tired to get back down the floor. So is there future for these 7 foot 300+ beasts or are the slimmer 6'10"-11" scorers the future?

First off I have a problem with that last sentence. Alot of the guys you're calling 7 ft beasts, would be in the same boat as most our centers nowadays. Pat Ewing and Hakeem both probably are no bigger than Emeka Okafor or Dwight Howard. The classic size for a center is 6'10-6'11 and 250, and of the true stud big men only 2 really huge guys (Shaq and Wilt) have really been exceptionally large.

If anything because of Shaq, a new trend of teams tryign to get bigger and stronger players to play the position and gaurd him is what caused there to be so many stiffs in the league. Teams wouldn't allow long athletic players like Camby to play the 5 and instead wasted picks either (a) picking low talent big bodies who 9 times out of 10 ended up being busts, or (b) trying to overbulk players who were meant to be slim, which took away their strength, speed and athleticism. People aren't meant to be that size and be that athletic, if you watch the NBA for 50 more years you still won't find many more Shaq's or Wilt's.

Also its the "in" thing to do to criticize the center position but its in better shape than its been in 10 years. We still have Yao and most would say Tim Duncan now (even if you could deny it during his prime years, its almost impossible to not call him a C now), and a nice batch of young bigs. We already had Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum showing flashes of greatness in the league and they will be joined by Greg Oden the #1 pick last year, whose been compared to Bill Russell since he was a sophomore in high school. Thats not a bad cast. We also have a slew of other big men giving you double digit points every night while playing good d and rebounding everything in sight (ie Chris Kaman, Bogut, Biedrens, Okafor, Chandler, Dalembert, etc.).

I'm not saying the center position is strong, but its improving.

It isn't exactly fair to look for the next Shaq, in terms of playing style. Physically Shaq is the most imposing and dominant ever.

No player was ever as dominate as shaq was. He tore up the paint and couldnt be stopped unless he was doubled (by good players) or hacked. He could dunk on anybody and over power anybody. I dont think we will see anybody like him ever again but we may see a player similar like Oden and Bynum

The point of the thread is not, will there be another Shaq, but rather, will there ever be another centre with the talent level of previous post players. Right now, the future looks bleak in that respect.

These "will we ever" threads are retarded.

Right now the trend is for big guys to shoot etc and there aren't that many post bangers. But we don't know what will happen in 5, 10, 20, 30 years down the line.

Trends come and go, things tend to go in cycles.

Who's to say we won't see someone MORE dominant than Shaq?

I'm sure that in every era someone has said "will we ever see anyone as great as <insert name here>", the answer is simply that we don't know. But it's not impossible.

no one is saying will there ever be anyone as agreat as an individual. We are pointing out the lack of true centers that dominate their position, and right now there are 0 at this position.

What do you all think would happen to these players if they had to post up at the 5 against these other players:

DROB
Hakeem
Wilt
Bill
Shaq
Ralph
etcc....

Dwight
Amare
Yao
Timmyd
Kaman

Yes:

Greg Oden

Andrew Bynum

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think other wise. Both are in their early 20's (despite Oden's looks) and will be nothing less than remarkable.

Kenny George.

Dude can dunk without jumping. He just needs to learn to use his body better. He's freaking 7'7 freak of nature.

Bynum is going to be a beast. I've been hyping him since his second season.

He is still just 20 years old and was starting to play at an all-star level despite the fact that he had only played organized basketball for a few years.

Last season he averaged 13.1 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.1 bpg and 63.6 FG% in just 28.8 mpg.

Keep in mind he was also the second best player on one of the best teams in the Western Conference prior to his injury.

He was also getting better as the season went on.

In his last 16 games before his injury he was averaging 16.4 ppg, 10.9 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.4 bpg and 67.7 FG%.

The Lakers were 13-3 in that stretch.

I view Bynum as the best big man prospect. He has great hands, a soft touch around the rim, a long 7'6"-7'7" wingspan, he's a legit 7'1", he has excellent footwork, a consistent hook shot and he's athletic.

Oden will also probably be a great player. I don't Oden will become the type of offensive player Bynum does but I think he'll be a better defensive player. Oden has the potential to be one of the best defensiveplayers of all-time.

Dwight Howard isn't really near 7 feet but he's a legit center and already averaging 21 and 14. If he can develop any kind of footwork and passing ability then he'll be unstoppable.

The 6'10"-6'11" comment was dumb too.

Hakeem Olajuwon is 6'10"-6'11" by his own admission. Ewing is probably around that height as well, Oden only measured 6'11", Duncan is only 6'10"6-11", Alonzo Mourning is only about 6'10", Bill Russell was only about 6'10".

You don't have to be a legit 7 footer to be a great center.
