It is 50/50. Hawks were not ready to compete. Even if Paul was on the team. Hawks would have got blown out in the 1st round. In honesty we would have been one of those 6-7-8 seeds and always losing in the 1st round. Hawks went through this before. Good enough to make the playoffs. Never good enough to compete for the championship.
I just feel with having Marvin. The Hawks stand a better chance at competing for a championship. Marvin and JJ will compliment each other well at SF and SG. If gives the Hawks those two scoring options that can do just about everything very well. When you look at their game. Marvin and JJ are about two of the most complete players in the league. Most importantly they are unselfish and smart players. With the athletes this team has. Any knowledgeable PG should fit in well here. That PG doesn't have to be the great playmaker Paul is. Speedy is an ideal fit for this team. Speedy just need to stay healthy and play at least 30-32 mpg.
Chris Paul for sure. Even though the above poster makes great points how they weren't ready to compete, you still want a star like cp3 when you can get him. You can alway trade him if he doesn' fit into your plans, though better is to trade the other guys
i'm 50/50 too. I love paul, but his size did scare off ppl, especially with way he plays, injury could be a concern. PGs tend to be pretty attainable in drafts. sf/pfs are the good tweeners that are hard to attain. Its easy to make the call now, but ill wait a few years till i make judgement.
drafting marvin instead of CP3 or Deron Williams was a huge mistake.Atlanta played without a real pg last season...but they had around...9 fowards on their roster...it's embarasing for thier GM
Starting small forwards are easier to find in drafts.
but you can win championships with a decent pg, you don't necessarily need a superstar pg, they were looking for a go to guy for the future at the time. I'm not saying it was the best choice, but i can see both sides of it. We are in an era of basketball where size and athelticism plays a huge part in gameplay. A guy of his size and mobility don't come around often.
Paul is very good, i'm a huge fan, but at least give marvin a chance. Paul came into a good situation so its easy to see what he's able to do. Marvin had harrington in his way. At the very least give it a couple of years.
with what chris paul has done so far, most would be quick to say..obviously paul...but if remember marvin is much younger and didn't even start on that talent laden north carolina team. it's hard to say, but i wouldn't be disappointed with williams. one way or another, you couldn't really go wrong with either of them. anyways the hawks have claxton, and he'll be a great point for them..what's done is done..
As a GM on a team such as the Hawks (who were struggling at the time and Chris Paul would not get them into the playoffs) I would draft Williams. In the long run Williams should be better than Paul however it will take a few years for Williams to reach his potential. Willams fits well on a team like the Hawks because the Hawks are in a re-building process and it will tkae a few years until they will be playofff contenders.
