The Washington Wizards and other teams are working out prospects for the upcoming NBA Draft. Here's what Chris McCray, a 6-5, 190-pound senior guard from the University of Maryland, said after working out for the Wizards a few days ago:
On his workout:
Chris McCray: “It was fun. It gave me a chance to get back home. I haven’t been home in 2 months, this was my first workout. I think I did pretty well.”
On preparing for the draft with John Lucas:
Chris McCray: “Definitely, we work out from 9-6 to everyday, there is no time to play around out there. It’s been a good experience for me to get away from home, to be by myself, and not being able to call my mom to make me dinner.”
On learning from his experiences at Maryland:
Chris McCray: “I was the leader of the University of Maryland team for three years and I was the captain and I let the guys down. We definitely had a shot to go all the way, with the talent that we had on our roster. I have got a chip on my shoulder and I am going to do whatever it takes to help those guys. It is the way I have felt since the day it happened.”
Chris McCray: “I had a great coach in Coach (Gary) Williams, and he sat me down, I had tears in my eyes he had tears in his eyes, because we knew we had something special this year. It was just one of those situations that he couldn’t do anything about it. I take 100 percent of the responsibility for it, he put me in the best situation to succeed and I did not take advantage of it.”
On the possibility of playing for the Wizards:
Chris McCray: “It would be very special, one of my dreams was to play for the University of Maryland and my second dream is to play for the Wizards. It would be a dream come true. I wouldn’t have to leave my family and I can stay here.”
On the importance of the workouts:
Chris McCray: “They are definitely important; you see what the NCAA tournament can do for a player’s stock. I was in a situation where I could not be in the tournament so my stock dropped automatically. I have to work two times as hard as everyone else.
