Ok, heres the basic rules.
-The draught will be a total of 7 rounds.
-Serpentine draught
- Free for all. No requirements like 3 lagers, 3 ales. I think this will allow for participants to more accurately reflect their beer preferences.
- Discussion on beer selection is welcomed. There are some great resources to direct people to (like the music drafts use youtube). Realbeer (http://www.realbeer.com), Ratebeer (http://www.ratebeer.com)and Beeradvocate (http://www.beeradvocate.com)all have information on a wide variety of beers as well as user ratings.
-Petty insults and arguments are asked to be kept to one post and response. Any further flaming should be conducted by PM. Failure to comply will disqualify you from the draught. Lets keep this a fun and positive learning experience about all things beer.
- draught order is based on number of posts (from least to most). This is based on current account (dont feel like combining LoJ's account #s).
-12 hour time limit to make your pick, then bumped to the end of the round (where you are given another 12? we'll see).
-PM the poster following you once you've made the pick.
- If you cant be around (I will be gone all next week), PM your picks to someone else.
-I dont really think draughts have winners (its really just a way to generate discussion/disseminate information on a topic of mutual interest), but we can figure out some sort of system to score "teams" if you all really want to.

OK, thems the rules. Draught order will be up shortly. If one of you code-friendly people wants to make one of them fancy draught order thingies, feel free.

I think its funny, also you're not in the draft so why does it matter??

Anyways, do the participants know the draft has started??

Bump it so Pain of Thought can make his selection

Maybe a cliche choice, maybe not worthy of a # 1 overall pick, but I have to go with my all time favorite.

I'm a bit occupied at the moment, but I will be sure to tell some stories maybe and post more about the project itself later.

Some of the participants are... I'm guessing Boozehound is going to draft some brews that no one has heard of before. Quite frankly, unless you live on the west coast and drink micros, I may bring out a few you've never heard of. Not to be elitist, but just because they're my favorite beers.

I got some "goto micros" here in WI as well, but I guess the strategy at the beginning would be to get through all the big names before they're taken.

I got my pick ready whenever StylesP makes his pick

I guess it depends on how you approach the drafting process. I'm putting together my dream six-pack, regardless of who knows the beers, or regardless of getting voted the winner at the end.

Also, if someone hasn't heard of one of my beers, maybe they'll see it in the store, give it a try, and enjoy it too. Thats what these drafts really should be about

Can we get some descriptions, reviews, or anything of the beers you guys choose? Although pretty much everyone is going for the main stream beers (BankShot has a nice choice with the Downtown Brown though) a little something wouldn't hurt. I'd want to see a description if there happens to be a beer I haven't tried yet.

Yeah I've got my next 3 ready to go.... these drafts all depend on people being logged in at the right time. Sometimes you can get 3 or 4 picks in an afternoon, sometimes two people in a row will lose a pick after waiting for 12 hours each.

well duh, some people would drink homemade prison wine if that was the only booze they had. This is your all time favorite beers. If you put bud light as one of your all time favorite beers then you either don't have any taste buds or haven't tried many beers in your time.

Rollstone Red Ale

http://www.ratebeer.com/beerimages/full_size/10269.jpg

Review from Beeradvocate.com:

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck with a blurb about the beer on the label, no freshness date.

Appearance: Tawny, almost brick red in colour with a healthy and slowly fading beige lace.

Smell: Sweet malt with highlights of toasted biscuit, oily hop on the nose also with hints of delicate flowers and a ghost like tangerine fruitiness.

Taste: Medium build with a smooth and modest carbonation. A reserved malty palate leads the taste buds to toasted flavours, some on the verge of mildly roasted. In the sweetness of the malt are vague flavours of caramel and raw honey. More hop flavour than bitterness which makes for a well structured balance with the malt, hop oils are quite noticeable with suggestions of mint, citric rind and flowers. Further towards the finish the malt get more of a toasted and dry character though still there is some residual sweetness.

Notes: A remarkable ale that brings back memories of the micro revolution back in the mid 90’s, Z Street says that this brew goes great with burgers … I could see making it one of my ideal session brews. Great use of malt and hops that seem to meld very well together.

My Second Pick: Samuel Adams Boston Lager

http://www.boston.com/business/ticker/BostonLagerPintGlass.jpg

BeerAdvocate Review:

On-tap, served in a pint

Appears amber in color with a frothy, two finger slightly off-white cap. A clear body with moderate visible carbonation.

Aroma is very clean and bright. Sweet toasted biscuity malt and floral, earthy hops in a pretty good balance.

A soft, caramel flavor pours onto the palate with a mild bitterness in the finish. A good balance. Hops are floral and mellow and a touch spicy.

A moderate amount of carbonation and a medium body. Fuller than you would expect. The drinkability is the best thing this beer has going. Always consistent and there for you when you need it in a pinch.

Quick question for the beer connoisseurs: I'm going to be a college freshman this year in Baltimore, and I've only really had the typical/accessible alcoholic beverages (BudLight, CoorsLight, Heineken, Mike's Hard, Smirnoff, etc.) what are some cheaper, different beers you'd guys recommend from this draft, and what really distinguishes them from your usual beers.

Try some stuff from Sam Adams. There's a bunch of different kinds and they're pretty easy to find. The Boston Lager is their most popular, and it's my favorite beer, but they make some amazing seasonal beers also.

A lot of these beers not only have deeper, more palatable flavors, and as an added bones they are often higher in alcohol content.

The problem with most of the handcrafted micros are that they will be considerably more expensive than a sixer of, say, Bud Light, but when taking into consideration the higher alcohol content and straight-up enjoyability of drinking something that doesn't taste like water, it is well worth the couple of dollars extra per night drinking.

As for the Baltimore area, I have no idea what kind of craft beers are available since I spent most of my beer-enjoying time in the Pacific Northwest. Maybe if you're lucky some of the other participants will have an idea.

I'm not too high on the Boston Lager, but the Octoberfest is really good, and for a lighter style the Spring seasonal is pretty good too. Not sure about the summer seasonal.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to these more exquisitely flavored beers for sure, considering I had BudLightLime the other day and I didn't exactly enjoy it, though out of the usual beers that I'd had, I'd had to go with Corona though BluePoint was pretty solid too.

Long Trail's Belgian White pours a cloudy, straw color, and is topped by a bright white head that quickly fades to a film. I like the color a lot, but the head retention leaves something to be desired. The aroma is fairly mild overall, though the traditional notes of spicy coriander and citrus are there, along with notes of pepper, yeast and banana. There's also a bit of graininess present in the aroma, which, when combined with the relative lightness of the other components of the aroma hints at an inviting crispness.

Westmalle Tripel. One of the best beers around, has a fruity aroma and tastes a little bitter. Plus it looks great as well.

pretty much my favorite beer. we should have a malt liquor round.

My absolute favorite, I love S.A. Octoberfest! just checked this thread out for the first time. Good job guys and I'll have to take a look at some more of these beers the next time I'm out shopping.

Looks like I'm up. I think it was Triangle that questioned my # 1 overall pick in Heineken. Maybe not the selection of a tried and true beer enthusiast, but considering the global popularity perhaps a damn fine pick?

This round I'm going with a less popular choice (here in the states anyway). I discovered this beer at a local supermarket a few years ago. After about 6 months they discontinued, and I can't seem to find it anywhere else. Which beer am I talking about?

All I really know, is that it's a Spanish brew, a Barcelona favorite?

Alright, moving into Round 3 I'm departing Europe and bringing it back home. Let's take a journey to the West Coast. Chino, California to be exact.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/76/SNBC_PaleAle_Bottle_Pint.jpg

By far, my favorite beer manufactured (Sierra Nevada Brewing Company) here in the US of A.

Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale is the second best-selling craft beer in the United States, behind the Boston Beer Company's Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

A damn fine American beer.

I've actually heard about this kwaj, but I can't find it anywhere. I've checked a number of NSLC's without much luck. I might start to check to coolers in a few of the wine shops around town - they generally have a more refined selection of beer in the back. I've heard excellent things though.

Maybe I just haven't been looking hard enough. I'll take a gander again in a few days.

There's a spot in downtown Hali called Maxwells (I think) that apparently has upwards (or upward?) of 80 different beers on tap, if I remember correctly. I just checked the website, and they've got it - even better, a pint is $4.50 if you go any day before 7... Interesting...

Appearance: Decent sudsy head, with a tannish gold color. Not a bad looking beer.

Smell: A bit fruity, malt, apricots, a little caramel.

Taste: a little hop in there somewhere, but mostly fruity -- apricots -- finishes slightly dry and sweet.

Mouthfeel: Refreshing, mild carbonation, light bodied.

Wisconsin's own New Glarus Spotted Cow

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ldevf2U9ZS4/SOgOdyHBZ4I/AAAAAAAAAto/CRDhW34T4Ic/s320/spotted+cow.jpg

The New Glarus Brewing Company is an American brewery founded in 1993. Located in New Glarus, Wisconsin, a small town south of Madison, Wisconsin, the New Glarus Brewing Company is by definition a small independently owned craft brewery. They have been rated the 21st largest craft brewer and 32nd largest overall brewing company in the country, according to the Brewers Association in Boulder, CO, and over the years it has received numerous awards for its many different beers.[1]

By far the company's most popular label is Spotted Cow, a cask conditioned farm house ale, sweetened with a hint of corn. The Wisconsin Belgian Red is also very well-received and has won a variety of awards world wide. It is a fruity Belgian lambic-style ale brewed with Montmorency cherries from Door County, Wisconsin. This beer has won numerous awards in beer competitions around the world, and consistently ranks in the 100th percentile (highest possible average rating) among the critical beer drinkers at RateBeer.com. The Uff-da Bock is also popular, being a bit stronger than most bocks.

Probably my favorite beer

I'm very much into Bourbon ( if you're going to start go with Woodford Reserve). I went to a beer tasting festival when I came across Innis and Gunn. It tasted like an ale/bourbon hybrid. Palet started out like Bourbon then finished liek ale. After taste testing about 15 beers, this one blew me away. They have a rum cask one as well, but i liked the Bourbon. This is legitemately categorized as a beer.

Read the rules ladies

Here here! Let's keep it about beer! Also, when someone asks a generic question (like "do I only have one more pick?") let us respond in a manner that is informative but also kind, rather than going apeshit using harmful words and ALL CAPS.

My Pick: Imperial Stout Trooper (Connecticut, US)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ly3vBOeDf00/SjhJ3f6wM_I/AAAAAAAAAJI/qv-MeCtBGPQ/s320/P1000786.JPG

tai4ji2x's BeerAdvocate Review (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/357/34484):

12oz bottle with white plastic wrapping around the top and cap. back label's bottle description/blurb gives the only explicit indication that this is the 2008 vintage. tasted in mid-may 2009. poured into tulip.

opaque black. 2-finger brown head w almost red tint, creamy and foamy, recedes to thin layer, then wisps and ring. incomplete rings of lace which then shrink further to just splotches.

aroma: coffee and roasted malt, lightly charred dark caramel, hint of dried cherries. earthy, leafy hop note. trace vanilla. whiff of alcohol in back.

taste: roast malt with light char, cold coffee, earthy hop with moderate bitterness, with note of mash acidity that is coffee-like again. vanilla hint. more roast and coffee in the finish. alcohol is hidden well. everything is all just a touch "watered-down" though - it's very good, but could be a touch more vibrant or robust.

great texture and feel. syrupy, almost viscous, yet extremely smooth and creamy. mild coffee-like acidity and astringency in and throughout the finish. mild to moderate carbonation is tingly upfront, but helps with creaminess.

ok, so the flavor could have been more robust. but the masking of the alcohol makes this amazingly drinkable for an 8.5% ABV stout.

With my next pick I select:

Hop Rod Rye
(Picture didn't seem to be working)

Alstrom Bros Review (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/610/3158/?ba=bros):

On-tap at Anam Cara, stated that it was 7.7% abv … I have seen people say that it is 7.5%-8.0%.

Superb frothy head with an unyielding retention. Perfect clarity showing a deep reddish mahogany colour. Massive hop aroma, clean and pungent going from piney to grapefruit rind. A hint of spicy rye in the nose as well.

Lush crispness with a creamy back in the full body … I swear it was massaging my tongue. I felt the malt covering the palate but the hops are too much to handle … in a good way. So much hop flavour and the bitterness was spot on, when the beer warmed up a bit the spiciness of the rye came through as well as some caramel maltiness.

By far one of the best west coast beers I have had to date.

Serving type: on-tap

interesting. just checking in on the vacation. Thanks BS for
covering meau. My squirming baby girl who wont sleep wanted to see what was going on in the beer draught.

Check out Goose Islands Bourbon County Stout (only available seasonally on tap in chicago area bars-which is why its not on my list). this 13% abv stout is aged 100 days in used Jim Beam Barrels. Brilliantly complex, my friends used to but a 10 oz snifter of this and use it to enhance 3-4 pitchers of michelob (or whatever). Brilliant beer, but not an all nighter. Ill have to see if i can find this one somewhere as well. I do love whiskey.

Anyways, Have fun with the rest of the draft and I look forward to seeing all the fine beers selected.

A - Pours an extremely clear light golden color. Head formation is strong, slow to dissipate. White in color. A fair amount of bubbling is present.

S - Truth in advertising - there is plenty of blueberries on the nose. Sweet and refreshing. Some yeast notes in the background.

T - Starts off with a light hint of blueberries and malt flavors. Mid-stream builds with some bitterness, but with no hopping whatsoever. The aftertaste is where the blueberries shine, coming through with a sweet biting taste of the rind of the blueberry.

M - Moderate body - no carbonation bite. Well built beer for the overall light makeup of this beer.

D - Very drinkable - abv is easy to manage. Sweetness rolls very well - not overbearing. Not weighty on the palette. Probably not one for a cold winter day however.

I've had it. Taste is pretty normal, nothing out of the ordinary. The funny thing is the reason for the galss is the temperature of your hand on the glass is enough to disruct the consistancy of the beer. This beer is also meant to be paired with cheeses.

Yeah Yuengling is the sh*t. I drink that stuff like water while in PA. Lionshead is pretty good cheap beer too. I'm sure you've had that?
love their black and tan. Dont consider it a macro since its pretty limited in distribution. Just had their pale ale down in the keys cause I could. Great beer company, used to pick it up by the case on the way back west through PA every trip.

I'm going to go for Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

http://www.thebrewsite.com/images/sierra-nevada-celebration.jpg
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/1904/?ba=bros

Balanced? No way. But who gives a rat's ass? 2001 is something to kick the Winter into gear, with its incredible raw hopped character and warming alcohol. A beer to look forward to, regardless. I do recall previous years being more pronounced in the malt dept. and more balanced. But hey, whatever. Drink a few of these and nothing will really matter.

To give this year's a perfect 5 is a little extreme. Everything was great overall, the drinkability ... like crack. I'm off to the pawn shop ...

Notes from 2000:

Presentation: 12oz short brown twist cap bottle. Lovely little X-mas scene on the label. Bottled on date, on neck of bottle.

Appearance: Rich, deep amber/copper. Excellent slightly off-white head ... very creamy, sticky and retains like its fighting for its life.

Smell: There's an absolutely incredible aroma on this beer! A nose full of big herbal hops and fruity esters. Some yeast aromas are also present, but very minimal.

Taste: Dreamy. So smooth. So rich. So fortified with malt goodness. So hoppy. At first there's a creamy feel on the palate, that then opens up to toasty, sweet malt flavours. A bold herbal hop runs rampid on the palate with a semi-prickly, puckering, lemon-rind quality. After a few more mouthfulls the brew begins to warm the body, and you can really feel the alcohol kick in. Finishes a bit dry with grain/husk flavours, and some breadiness as it warms.

Notes: At 6.8% this is one hell of a Winter seasonal! Warms the body and soul. A brew for hop heads too. One of the best Winter Seasonals that I have ever had, and one of the best Strong Ales. Drink with caution as this brew will kick your ass.

A-Pours a clear light amber deep golden color with a medium creamy off white head that stays for a little bit but dissapears to a very thin film on the beer. And leaves thin delicate beautiful lacing. Could have better retentioin though.

S-The aroma is the most comlex hoppy beer I've ever smelled. It's like this bright sweet candied earthy apricot/peaches.

T-The flavor isn't as bright but just as comlex. First is a earthy, floral and a bit piney. Then the clean and slightly woody bitterness (in a good way)comes to play on my tongue. I'm very suprized by this IPA. I didn't expect it to be this good. Also there is of coarse a solid sweet maltiness in the flavor.

M-The mouthfeel is pretty big for it just being under 6%abv. It has a creamy full body and it coats the mouth with a sweet bitterness that lingers well.

D-I could session this wonderful hoppy beer. Very well done Lagunitas.

Serving type: bottle

My favorite part thus far about the draft is the potential for seeing some of these beers that I would otherwise not purchase, at the liquor store and trying them out now that I know they're enjoyable.

Didnt I tell you to stop being so technical? "hey guys, gather 'round, town hall meeting! there's an important matter we must discuss!" ... "do we let LOJ fill the void of PoT?" ... *silence* ... a few oh's and ah's ... "I SAY YES!" "NO, I SAY NO!" ... "HE HAS TO BE IN, IT'S LOJ FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!" Nothing changes. I'm, in the draft. STFU, you're very annoying in a non-purposeful manner (which is what seperates me from you).
