What topic are you confident you have the most knowledge on in ISH? So when the time comes, you are the one to talk to about this topic.

Join the club. Other than my aforementioned beloved Pacers, I don't really know dick. Sure there's a bevy of topics I could own a 7th grader in in an Oxford debate, but I don't know anything deeper than the periphery. Hell, I don't even know what an Oxford debate is other than it being the general credentialed debate format.

You'd be surprised how good the money was. You wanna make some quick bucks? Get a confident hot girl and make her a financial domination website. Make sure to get her to sign a contract saying you own the rights to her online persona. Now check other similar websites and copy them, a couple of videos, soundbites, sell her used clothing, demand tribute, etc. You'd be surprised how many men will literally give their money away.

I like niche markets, the porn industry is too big and generic.

you labeled MW2 an "arcade shooter"...never heard that before unless it was in reference to a shooter found in the arcade...

not saying that slang isn't used...just saying I haven't heard it used when speaking of first person shooters

that really isn't what I had in mind of "video game knowlege" anyway really...

to be honest, there are alot of top selling games I don't know sh*t about, like the Final Fantasy series...I know nothing of it, any of them

something like that, but sh*t like deus ex wouldn't be described as arcade, but its not realistic at all, its more levels of complexity, and yes arcade shooters can be great it isn't a negative term
what I think of with that term:

http://kingsentertainment.com.au/files/u1/time-crisis-4-deluxe.jpg

anything on a console of PC that doesn't have an actual gun you plug in would be a first person shooter to me...

NOW, if someone said that "MW2 has a more arcadey feel to it than Deux Ex does" then that would make complete sense to me...

There's only about 3 songs I can think of that Otis didn't do better than everyone else who tried it. Hard To Handle is one. (i think i prefer Sam Cooke's "Cupid" and there's one or two other odd balls...)

its not that i dont have respect for anyone elses opinion on film, i just know i have a very broad appreciation, most people see a film and like or dislike, i feel i really recognise and engage with what is good or not, what works and what doesnt in terms of technique. it isnt a question of opinion or even intelligence, there are recognised experts and academics that i know that have no appreciation of certain genres. almost everyone seems to have some kind of bias when it comes to certain types of film, i really believe i do not have any preferences. on being asked what kind of films he likes stanely kubrick once said "i like good films". thats exactly how i feel about it.

that's all well and good but that's not knowledge of film making, that's taste and rhetoric.

I'm by no means the "best film critic", I just happen to be dialed into to how the industry works.

I've always wanted to take a stab at becoming a director. What are the average Joe's (somebody who's not a millionaire and doesn't have any contacts in the movie industry) chances of becoming a movie director?

two choices.

easy- be a director. make an independent movie. get a decent camera, decent script, and some editing software. extremely unlikely anyone will ever see your movie and even more unlikely that you'll get paid but you're a director.

harder- join the DGA (http://www.dga.org/index2.php3?chg=), you can apply to the DGA training program (http://www.dgatrainingprogram.org/) (if accepted they put you on different movies and tv shows where you learn production for 400 days) or do 600 days of PA work (on set production assistant- i can actually help you get this job if you're in LA) + 75 commercial or 75 "3rd area" (not NY or LA) days and submit your "book" (production reports and call sheets for each day) to the DGA. you'll likely have to spend some years working as an AD (assistant director) first but it's insanely well paid once you're in the union. You cannot direct most "big" (anything you see in theaters really) movies w/o being in the DGA. That was a hasty breakdown, if you're super serious about it and want more detail you can PM me.

I have a grip. He claimed to know the most about the film industry, and you seemed to immediately assume that to know more than you he must work in said industry. I'm just looking at the footprints in the sand. For instance, the Oscar thread. Instead of being like "dude, I already posted an Oscar thread", you were instead like "dude, I already posted an Oscar thread with my picks" like anyone cares. And I have seen multiple threads where you're asking "why haven't you guys seen this yet?"(Bright Star and a couple others), seemingly because if you like it, it's deemed that everyone else must as well or risk being labeled an idiot.

Get over yourself.

i seemed to assume???? this is an awful lot of assumption based off my assumption wouldnt you say? when someone says they know alot about the film industry and film making(not film) wouldnt that suggest that they work or have worked in the film industry? so i was very interested to know- not because i wanted to dispute his claim but simply out of interest, is that ok for you?

I have seen multiple threads where you're asking "why haven't you guys seen this yet?"(Bright Star and a couple others), seemingly because if you like it, it's deemed that everyone else must as well or risk being labeled an idiot.

ok, when i ask people why they havent seen a certain film yet this is directed at the keen film people on this board(of which there are many) this is also partially in jest. secondly it is actually the opposite of again - what you are assuming is my intention- i am actually trying to draw attention to very good current films and give people a heads up on some films that only get small releases- note how i usually do it at the time of the u.s release.

I'm just looking at the footprints in the sand. For instance, the Oscar thread. Instead of being like "dude, I already posted an Oscar thread", you were instead like "dude, I already posted an Oscar thread with my picks" like anyone cares.

my opinion is a big deal, as i have chosen to bestow it upon this board you should treat it with the respect and praise it deserves. j/k

it isnt going well, we have six weeks and it is still in, well lets say its conceptual phase, but seeing as how the film itself is limited to 30 seconds concept is everything. the people who i choose to work with are pretty good with the technical stuff but not so imaginative, this is mostly a blessing as i obviously want creative control.

I can hold my own discussing MMA. I've followed MMA (Vale Tudo, Pancrase, etc.) for about 15 years, and I've trained for the past 6 years. I've trained with some of the top guys in the sport, and met most of the relevant fighters in the game today. I don't think I'm a badass (because I've trained with real badasses), but my opinion on the subject probably carries more weight than most.

I'm also fairly versed in Economics. I have a B.A. in Economics and a Masters in International Trade Policy.

oh, do me!

Your insatiable appetite for knowledge, truth, education and belittling ignorant Americans speaks a tale of conquering many fears. I don't sense much fear in your heart. However, there are a few things that'll leave you vulnerable as a shell-less, broken-jawed Snapping Turtle. If somehow a scientist was to find out that the habits you partake in; recycling, importing cheeses from Europe, purchasing grass-fed meat were ABSOLUTELY futile, then you'd most certainly cringe. You do have a daughter that if Ursula forbid is beloved by a slimy, fearless Man, your devotion to having humans choose their own fate would leave you in quite a dilemma. You want your daughter happy, but you believe no man is good for him. Alas, you (King Triton) have no choice but to give up all your power to save little Ariel. In your childhood, I sense a bit of dejection from the prototypical hot, blonde female, which led you to have an appreciation with the more open-minded brunette types. Perhaps had a Paris Hilton stepped in and captured your heart earlier, you'd turn out to be a completely different individual. You also fear the artistic endeavors of Allman and Coltrane to be forgotton as time elapses, and newer things come about. And of course, if there ends up being a Heaven or Hell, that'd lead to quite a gross conclusion :oldlol:

Marlo - Your biggest fear is a mix of Pocahontas with a bad ending, excessive technology with a decaying human spirit, mediocrity (particularly in that your designated tastes become the status quo), mankind as Idiocracy, and that your kids won't be able to handle the Bohemian lifestyle your parents set forth for you. You've shown great strides in appreciating globalization and other people's culture, and if some xenophobic All America-azz chauvinstic white male steps up and claims power with a superiority complex, you'd shudder in pain. The sight of hardworking, but underprivileged Asians/Latinos receiving sh!t from people in control hurts you, and for good reason. Furthermore, you take great pride in your appreciation of film noir and other obscure pieces of art, and if they were to all of a sudden be appreciated by every average azz American, it'd leave you in shock. Moreover, the idea of millions of millions consuming sh!t from the FDA, deforestrating, littering the f*ck outta the cities, and leaving Earth to be some mechanical hellhole postpones you from sleeping at night. Things like self-survival, beautiful nature Existentialism, and understanding others' perspectives are staples in your life and Staples just brought newer, artifical staples in the world's stapler. Last and DEFINITELy not LEAST, you fear the balance in letting your kids do what you want. As you grow, your reckless (but awesome lifestyle), gambling, "on the edge" ways leave you yearning for a bit of security. The image of a son/daughter brutally harming their shin like you did, or suffering will invade you in your dreams. But at the same time you don't want them to turn out like the rest of the crew who just do what they're told. It'll be a long journey, but hopefully you can make it.

You are much more enigmatic and harder to trace. From what I've deduced from you thus far, you have an extremely high opinion of a) your potential b) how special you are in comparison to the cats that surround you c) the versatility of your knowledge d) your sex appeal. This four-part system is evident in many other ISHiots, but the thing that tips you off is your heroes. Brer Rabbit, Birmingham Civil Rights Movement,.. who the f*ck is familiar with that? Meeting a person just like yourself, with equal accolades, and a distinct uniqueness could create feelings of envy. Disappointing the people in your hood, and somehow not acquiring that Bachelor's would also leave you emotionally scarred. You've recently rocked a "Best Father Mug" yet, impreganting a female is NOT a viable choice at the moment. Dwayne Carter's well-written verse "Wear that latex or you'll get that late text saying I'm late text" applies here, I believe. Any situations of screwing up (as a dad), you losing your temper, or meaningful backlashes of "I hate you Dasher," can easily infilitrate your subconscious and leave you vulnerable for nightmares. Images of excessive humanity and social reform seem to leave you a bit queasy, becfause your idea of a Utopia vastly contrasts with the sad state of affairs. You are also an atheist, but have shown intrigue and fascination by the major religions, as if you're not sold on pure empirical scientific truth being the end-all, be-all source of human knowledge. Perhaps, spirits, ghouls, jinns, karma and other vivid, fantastic imagery could do something to you before you kick the bucket and your soul doesn't find peace.

Tell me where i'm wrong.. i'm really reaching on this one no lie.

This is definitely incorrect.

Certain number of tasks in engineering require creativity. There are usually many ways to solve a problem in engineering, or accomplish a task. However, the paths to do so are difficult, and you have to be quite creative to find your own way. Imagination is also required. Engineering solves everyday problems like mines and yours, and to do so imagination is required to create the next big technological change.

Jasper
02-10-2010, 09:24 PM
Got to catch fish , not need sponsors to do it. :oldlol:

Actually I used to ice fish 4x a week , because of my work schedule.
Walleye's were the target , and the trophy I never caught was a 10 pounder.
Any ways I don't use a gas power auger , but a hand auger. I live in the most concentrated fresh water lake region in the world - Northern Wisconsin.
So naturally we fish, swim , ski whatever.
The ticket to hauling in a big fish through the ice , is working your line hand over hand until you get the fish close to the hole. That particular fish made about 4 runs , before he was ready.
When he gets close to the hole , I circle my line about 3-4 times , to twist the head back and forth , then when I think he's ready pull him through the tunnel. Bigger fish like Pike , Musky , lake trout , once their heads are above the ice , the danger is the line breaking and the fish slides back in. You grab the fish as soon as the head is above the ice.
Two weeks ago , I had a fish after about 20 minutes on top of the ice , flip flopping around , and though I had the fish about 4 meters away from the hole , flipped right back into the hole.
About 15 minutes later , I actually caught the same fish again , cause I had measured it. :oldlol: No shit - that's the truth.

Architectures and Engineers need each other like I said before.

You'll only see creativity and imagination in on-the-job problem solving or when everything goes to shit, the engineer has to get everything back up and running. That's where the creativity and imagination comes in. Not every engineer has it but that's what a real engineer is to me. That's what I want to be doing. Not sitting behind a desk doing models and designing something on AutoCAD or finding the maximum loads on I-beams. Those are all important but not for me at all.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to design to fit cost btw. Budgets are pretty crucial dude. And Engineers have done a lot of good for this world and for you to disrespect them like that is pretty ignorant. You can thank engineers for your car, phone, computer, electricty, sewers, infrastructure, water, transportation, even your beer...everything dude. Engineering goes into all that.

I admit that engineers could be a little humble when it comes to work. I know I've been humbled since my first job. There are times when they need to admit they're wrong to laborers who have a ton of experience.

I'm sorry you had asshole engineers.

I hope you realize that creativity and innovation costs money. It is not the engineer that decides how much money is going to be allocated for a project, but rather the owner who decides how much he wants to spend.

Go look at some bridges and look at how beautiful some of them are. Those were designed entirely by structural engineers, not some architect. If you think this world can survive with only architects then you are kidding yourself. Yes architects have some common knowledge to be able to help through preliminary design, but good luck getting any further after that.

Frankly, many of the engineer PhDs Ive met at my dominantly engineering school are kind of dumbasses.
Sorry to have possibly offended you. Engineering PhDs are generally considered incredibly tough to receive comparatively speaking. Well, that's just from the people I've asked.

Have you ever met any profs from my department?
actually, no. Mostly standard (EE, ME, CE). Many of them I met through the SEM and TEM classes at the microscopy center.

TO clarify, these aren't profs, but PhD students.

again, nothing but respect for engineers, but the way GM and others act like its beyond the capabilities of a smart person who went into another field is ludicrous.

Sorry if I came across the wrong way, I didn't mean it like that. I was just implying it's generally much tougher. Doesn't mean you or someone else could not do it though.

No one really has any solid information on Gifted Mind anyways so he's still an Alt that is like Glove-lite in my book.

I think you have been after me since I first started posting here. This is why I don't like to dwell into more than necessary conversations on ISH. I apologize if anyone found my comments offending. I did not mean it that way.

Though I am an engineering major myself, thus I would have bias in this topic anyways.

would you mind telling us your focus beyond engineering?
