If it was England with Eriksson id take Germany in a heartbeat, but since its Capello and the world cup knockout rounds, I think England takes this.

The German squad isn't really taht special at all this year. Above all some of the players are lacking of the typical German values like absolute fighting spirit, tactical discipline, team spirit, pride and so on. Especially non native germans like Podolski or Ozil. Those guys don't even sing the national anthem in order not to hurt the feelings of their native contrys.:hammerhead: :hammerhead:
Still, against England everyone will be motivated 100 percent and the German tanks will be rolling all over the English squad. The Germans haven't lost a knock out game against England since 1966 and this won't chance on Sunday. The English team both lacks of quality and mentality. Against England the moral of the German player will make the difference.
It isn't a coincidence that german has done so much better then England over the last 40 years.

Higauin is a beast, he got 22 goals as a substitute, and unlike Rooney he produces at the international level.
Palermo is the Argentine Crouch with better skill.
Messi is not the only playmaker, Tevez, Pastore, Veron, Aguero, Maxi, all great playmakers who can create something out of nothing

Capello is an expert in taking teams with shit mentality and turn them into winners. He has been doing this for decades.
He took the 06-07 Real Madrid to winning the championship when that team was a complete mess, with Ronaldo not wanting to play and being transfered to Milan, Beckham struggling and having personal issues, Roberto Carlos playing way off his capacity, that bastard of Cassano f*cking around, Raul playing like shit also...etc etc. Since 2003 Real didnt win until Capello came and made them win in an epic comeback against Barcelona.
He made the same with AS Roma in 00-01, that team was having serious economic problems on the 5/6 previous years, competitive problems also, and he arrived, gave the team a style and surrounded the superstar Totti with nice working clutch players like Montella, Batistuta, Nakata, Aldair...etc.
This are only recent examples.

Rooney will have a good game tomorrow imo. German defense has been nothing special so far, and Mertesacker doesn't have the pace to stay with Rooney. Tough to pick, Germany hasn't looked that great after their first game and England is still not up to form. Maybe the lowered expectations after their group performance has taken pressure off the players?

There's absolutely no way Mertesacker does not play, save for injury.
The biggest question mark is whether Schweinsteiger will play. If he does not due to injury, Germany will likely play a different, more offensive syste,

It's not impossible for England to win, but Germany are the obvious favourites. England has been absolutely brutal so far - there game against Slovenia was pretty unimpressive although it was a step above their shitty play against the USA and Algeria.
It wouldn't be good for football if England won the world cup. Not with a team like this. So I've got to hope Germany pull it out.

The defenses of the USA, Algeria and Slovenia are feared throughout the world
He plays brilliantly for United because he gets great service from his midfield. It's the same for any striker - prime Ronaldo would look a step below his best if he played for this current England side. Unless Gerrard/Barry/Lampard step up Rooney will again be anonymous.
How well Rooney plays has very little to do with Germany's defense.

lol @ Germany being the favorites. Looking at the last two games, England has looked slightly better than Germany and have been improving by the match. If there is a favorite, it is England slightly. Their defense has been awful in the last two games, and I'm not sure how they will do up front. Schweinsteiger is unfit or not even playing, Ozil is good, Klose has sucked this year and Terry will give him problems, Podolski is meh and even Glen Johnson should have no trouble containing him. I'd place England as the 60/40 favorites, and that's only because I can see them choking on the penalties or Cole and Johnson making a stupid defensive mistake. I'm not that worried for some reason, not really scared of anyone on Germany.
Rooney was decent last game, way more involved. Had a couple of chances, one being a really powerful strike that hit the post. Beckenbauer may be right in that English players look tired (not as many breaks as other leagues) and Rooney has been dealing with nagging injuries in the last couple of months. You can see from watching him that he is not as active. I don't think the service is that huge of an issue as much as him playing differently (though wingers like Nani and Valencia would help him tons). He is spending more time out of the box (more withdrawn) than I recall him doing at United.
Lampard is the real disgrace on the English team though. Complete invisible.

Can't sleep for shit I am so wired up.
The good thing is Germany will do more than just try to stop us playing. In all 3 group games our opponents number one priority has been to stop us playing and put 10 men behind the ball and then hit on the counter. Teams seriously play for a draw or whatever they can get from us on setpieces. Germany will attack and offer more going forward than Algeria, Slovenia etc. which = more space for Rooney and the rest.
This sort of game suits us more than any game against an underdog/scrub nation who just try to contain us and make the game ugly.

Ya, I forgot to include that in my post. Algeria might not have big name defenders, but they were playing 8 men back and clogging up the box with bodies. Same with USA, they exclusively relied on counter attacking. Germany is not going to play them like that.

I'll be crushed if England lose tomorrow on penalties. Would rather get thrashed 4-0 over that.
I feel it's all going to come together tomorrow. They've looked better by the game. Rooney should be breaking out of his 11 hour slump. The men will be playing inspired football against a historical rival, and let rest of the teams know they are for real. Expectations after the group stages are lower so some of the pressure may be relieved. For all the talk of England being overrated, you're better off point your finger at Germany (especially if clowns here think they are the favorites).

We have a mediocere team. But we can rise to the occasion like no other nation in the knock out round.
And against England it's special. Wembley is their curse. We haven't finished below them in the World Cup since this final in 1966. And we won't this time. It's like an everlasting revenge.
I really hope it goes to penalties. There's hardly a better feeeling then seeing the Englsh crying after yet another penalty drop out :oldlol: :oldlol: :oldlol: :oldlol:

I'll be crushed if England lose tomorrow on penalties. Would rather get thrashed 4-0 over that.
I feel it's all going to come together tomorrow. They've looked better by the game. Rooney should be breaking out of his 11 hour slump. This is not a great German team but you clearly don't know what you're talking about if you think that England are the favourites:
- England find it extremely difficult to string multiple passes together. Germany don't.
- England were one goal away from being knocked out of the world cup
- Germany got through in a much tougher group. A loss to Serbia with ten men is far more impressive than drawing with a putrid Algerian side
- Germany's footballing attitude is just conducive to winning. Your talk about their mediocre defense is somewhat true. But two years ago they had one of the worst defenses in Euro 2008 and made it to the final. There they conceded only one goal against a Spanish attack that is light years ahead of whatever England put together tonight.
Then there's my favourite part of your post: that they are "historical rivals". Germany have been outperforming England since 1966. There is no rivalry. The only way the English players can be spurred on by their opponent is if they are completely ignorant of this fact.
You're right, this isn't a great German team. But this is a bad English team who play terrible football that is quite easy to defend. It's not impossible for England to win. I'd say their chances range from 35-40%.
The Germans are favourites - stop pretending that you know shit about football.

lol @ Germany being the favorites.

Instant replay is not used in any football game. There is a reason for this as it is part of the game, part of the drama, part of the legends that sorround football. Instead of Maradona's "hand of god" you would have a red card for him, instead of a free flowing game you would have continous interruptions.
I recommend watching "referees at work"-documentary about the pressure and life of football goali at the european cup. There a ref said it best: the game of sports and football lives from players making mistakes, learning from the mistakes and other players taking advantages of these mistakes; the referees should be granted the same level of human imperfection. It is what it is, it is what made football so great, what spurred e.g. the over 44 year old rivalry from the wembley goal, what makes people now talk about "history repeats itself" etc. This is what people talk about in pubs, in memories. Accept it as a part of the game und you learn to enjoy that their is imperfection in the referees just like in any human being.

If you have a official on some booth watching the game and had a communication device, then you could have stopped play and reward a goal. It wouldn't be controversial, since the stadium instant replay and TV replay will justify it.

And yes, plowkings suggestion to have the two line referees is a good one. But not instant reply.
But get the heck out with offside double standard. The english header was close but perfectly acceptable to be called offside when you compare it to 10 other situations in every game. And even if they had not called it, it would not have been a goal anyway so why cry about it? And what is the double standard? Where was a clear offside for germany that has not been called?

Huh? Mueller is one of the success storys for Munich this year? What are you talking about?

Game is over, though partly due to the refs.
You force a team to over commit due to not giving a clear goal that would have made them play completely differently. Germany were better though.

Muller played good for Bayern this year, maybe not as good as with Germany this WC but give the guy some credit.

Dude, not getting back on defense has nothing to do with the disallowed goal but with quicker german players (both with their feet and their head). It is not if England did not dominate the last 15 minutes of the first and first 10 minutes of the second half anyway even without the disallowed goal. Coulda woulda shoulda, the 2-2 might also have triggered another reaction for the german team and they might have scored 5 straight, who the **** knows?

I raelly like Muller. But with Bayern, he has those moments where you just think what is he doing. The good thing is, he is only 20 and looks like he has all the potential in the world. He could be a great player.

Well, the disallowed goal means nothing now. Total domination by Germany.
Disallowed goal means everything. Everyone was up the pitch because of the pressure to score. England would be playing differently if it was a tie game. Psychologically it becomes a different game. Terry, Johnson, Upson, Cole can all go to hell though.
I don't think using replay only on questionable goals would ruin the flow of a game. How often do questionable goals happen any way? Times have changed.
If not replay, at least have an extra official behind the goal or something.

Why not? Soccer is the #5 sport in the US, and they still won the group over an England team with its best athletes and millions of pounds at their disposal.

How exactly was this easy money?
If just, it would have been 2-2 going in at half time, and England accordingly wouldn't have gotten killed on the counter attack.

I actually had Germany at +0.5 so a tie wouldnt have phased me, and that call was obviously a terrible one...but England just isn't any good. They haven't been any good this whole tourny. Their only chance is off free kicks and corners, they have no wings to speak of, rooney is too slow, their defense is shady as hell...imo it was easy money, and it paid off.

So you truelly believe with the 2-2, it would have been clearly a different game? Germany dominated England for ~60-70 min the whole game and were clearly the better team. What a sore whiner you are. Be happy that Germany did not go up 3 or 4-0 in the first half. Grow some balls and accept that England was clearly the weaker team. Heck even the english commentators are not blaming this loss on the disallowed goal, at least they know something about sportmanship.

No, the two counterattack goals for germany where simply due to the german players outrunning the english defensive players. The attack situation for england were both so that enough english players were left on the defensive end. It is totally usual to have an even number of defensive playera and strikers when the counterattacks comes after e.g. a corner, a freekick, etc. the english players just didnt get their asses back quickly enough.

^ no surprise here. Germany got dominated after the first ~20ish minutes. England was all over them. The third goal took the life out of them, and you have to wonder if defenders would be that far up the pitch if the game was 2-2. England's defense was extremely weak. There were so many times where they just left the german players open.
Also the italians and others should look at Germany. They dont flop or waste time. Played with discipline the entire game.
Argentina is gonna have issues with this German offense as well. Their defense is weak too.
