A Greek triple jumper has been expelled from the Olympics after she posted a racist joke on Twitter.

Voula Papachristou was kicked out of her national team for mocking African migrants and expressing support for a far-Right political party.

Her offending message – which was referring to reports of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in her home country – read: 'With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!'

After initially insisting her comment had been 'a joke,' the 23-year-old yesterday issued a lengthy apology. But she was still expelled from the team by the Greek Olympic Committee, who said her statements had been 'contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement'.

"Protect themselves". That's too strongly worded. The Greek Olympic committee clearly knew this athlete has no chance to win any medal and they clearly didn't particularly like this athlete, so they decided to use this opportunity to their advantage. They scored some easy reputation with the international governing bodies on this.

The tweet itself isn't even racist. It's mocking the African immigrants, but not because of their race. And saying there are many African immigrants in Greece isn't racist: it's fact. The people who tell you that you can't quantify any facts that are even loosely connected to race are part of the crowd you need to watch out for.

I think they took it too far with the punishment. But if she won a Gold medal and then people see her affiliations and comments, Greece would look bad. The whole thing of the Olympics is to increase the good visibility of your country - never-mind Greece needing it more than ever now, and being the place where the Olympics began. Every country across the board that had an athlete use the Olympics for a political agenda (and unfortunately she has political ties to a far right political group) has had the medals revoked. She just didn't do her homework. When you look at it - they had to reprimand her and there seems to be no middle ground for reprimands.

She really dogged her coaches and sponsors who spent a lot of time and money on her.

A life long dream up in smoke over her using her own platform in a silly way. She was a bit arrogant about taking her time and that sealed her fate.
