I mentioned this before, but so far that beat, that sequence about 40 minutes in, that usually has little or no dialogue, and is overlayed pretty heavily with some musical piece, has been extremely well done.

They've played it for laughs, the drunken pretzel sticks. They've played it as a means to push plot, Saul's elder law add campaign. And last night it was played for tension and action with Mike's work.

It's a unique little mechanism that's worked great so far.

Tune Down by Chris Joss was the name of the music in that scene. Shazamed that shit.

Such a nice tune.

It sounded like 70s porn music, and that scene went on far too long imo. That was maybe the first time I disliked any scene in this show so far. I usually love their little music montages, but that one was just annoying and too long. I was dying for just more dialogue at that point. You only get the show for one hour every week.. I dont want to spend 5 minutes of it looking at Mike eat apples and do nothing..

I am surely wrong, however, I think Chuck is pretending. One big fat pretend to escape something bad he did at the law firm in the past.

He's not pretending. It's just psychological, not physical. Chuck basically "forgot" he had his sickness when he went to trunk of the car. That's why he was fine, until Jimmy reminded him.

It's linked to his disappointment in Jimmy. There's been a pattern during the past few episodes. Jimmy goes bad again, Chuck goes back to nutville.

Looks like Saul's lady betrays him from the look in the previews for next week. I'm guessing because Saul used chuck's code for research and since he's listed as counselor on the case as well since that chick mentioned chuck had an agreement with their law firm. Her eyes lighted up when she heard class action lawsuit, what a b1tch, she's just a social climber and she's gonna screw saul over to climb the corporate latter, she already convinced him to get kettlemans back to their law firm.

Make sense. This will play a large part in Jimmy abandoning his ethics. There is no loyalty or reward from doing the right thing

Vince Ghilligan is great at steering his audience into rooting for the main character. In BB, everyone wanted Walter alive despite his evil acts. Now with BCS, I'm rooting for Saul to get his but it's apparent that he's going to be screwed over and that will eventually lead into the shady lawyer we know

Yup. There is no chance in hell Jimmy gets to keep this case, that dickbag Howard will snatch it away from him, maybe even with the help of Chuck.

Also, you'd think with Jimmy being a mail center clerk he would have figured out how to print things without a printer/copy code.

I thought the ep where Chuck is in the hospital was the slowest, but I still liked it.

I thought this ep was great. Lots of interesting dialogue and story development.

So it seems like the Hamlin dude is gonna steal the case, and this is what's gonna cause Jimmy to enter the "dark side".

The women so far have been despicable so far (Kettleman/Kim/Mike's daughter-in-law).

Kim and Mike's daughter-in-law seem to be type to take advantage of people. Her "thanks for the money, but it's a drop in the bucket" response was out of line and was ploy to manipulate Mike to go out and hustle for some more case. She already knows that Mike is emotionally attached and distraught, so she it using that to her advantage.

I honestly think that Gilligan and co. are playing on the economic worries that so many people have these days. Both Breaking Bad and Better Call Soul have strong themes of poor finances, career woes, debt, and just fear of losing money. It is like, when you go back and watch movies from the Cold War era, they have themes of invasion, takeover, and nuclear holocaust, stemming from our fear of the Russians. It seems that Vince Gilligan is using that same kind of social fear to really pull in the audience, only this time, it is our financial distress being picked at.

The latest episode was amazing; great dialogue and exchanges, excellent character development with the tension of Jimmy and the law firm & most importantly his brother. That was Emmy caliber television at the end in his brother's house.

BB didn't focus much on Walt's backstory on screen. At least 16 years had gone by since Walt's severance from Gray Matter. Imagine a flashback season that focused on Walt's gradual state off oppression: The underpaying/underachieving career, him marrying "down" and settling for Skyler, working a crappy job at a car wash with an asshole boss for 5 years while his wife did nothing. Not to mention his broken relationship with his mother.

I caught up last night. I thought it was awesome too. The way Jimmy laid out the reveal on Chuck I thought was handled great. The Ehrmantrought segment was spot on. They have a tendency to, and they did this in BB too, where they overplay these one off characters, turning them in to charicatures almost, which they did with the guy who could get the pills. And I think it adds some punch to those one off type scenes. I think the boss that dealer was trying to work outside the network of will wind up being Gus.

And I'm glad Kim didn't turn out to be the one who used the case to advance. I'm glad she seems like she's going to stick it out with him. Even if it means a painful stretch here while Jimmy sulks over the truth. Because she's a great character.

I like that this show is a little more grounded in reality than Breaking Bad was. As great as BB was, things got pretty ridiculous after season one. Maybe this one will too, we'll see.

JohnnySic
04-01-2015, 08:19 AM
Also, like many others, I questioned whether they could build a show around a supporting character like Saul. But its working. I think its because people expected to get the full blown Saul from the get-go; in that case the show would have gotten stale quickly. Watching his evolution is far more interesting.

It was a really excellent season. It was particularly impressive that knowing how things play out long term didn't effect me very much watching in the moment.

One thing I look forward to seeing played out is the relationship with Kim. She's a spectacular character, especially as a supporting character, in a medium where good supporting female characters seem few and far between. She's smart and funny. They hint at intimacy, but haven't actually gotten anywhere. And most importantly, she's not a nag. She's got her own legitimate reasons for being torn between her career and Jimmy with real gray area in her behavior, without being a one note character.

With her not existing in BB though, I expect something horrible to happen between them at some point. Could be anything, even just a flaming out with Jimmy. And the way they've already shown a willingness, and an aptitude, for tinkering with the time line (including the long current time opening at Cinnabon), I'd love to see a final season set in real time where Cinnabon Saul tracks her down and becomes Jimmy again.

I would probably agree given the how climactic the arcs of the main characters turned out to be in BB. BCS was never going to be able to be on that same field.

But I think it's every bit as well done when it comes to character development and overall cinematography/direction. And there have been times where I've enjoyed it just as much.
