The Jazz hold a team option on Mack for next season, which they are expected to pick up, especially since Mack played well — for the most part — in a Jazz uniform. (http://www.sltrib.com/sports/3779198-155/utah-jazz-despite-a-strong-close) General manager Dennis Lindsey and coach Quin Snyder both said they were happy with Mack, and what he provided during his first two months in Utah.

Well this is gonna suck. Jazz better get themselves together for next year, no more excuses, things are going to get pricey. As for Exum, good that he's finally sprinting, I honestly don't think he should do anything this summer other than get ready; no summer league, no olympics, nothing

This article just shows how Lyles is going to make Booker kind of obsolete, but I'm kind of shifting to your idea of him replacing even Favors. He spaces the floor more, he's younger, undoubtedly hungry, and in the last few games of the year the commentators were all noting how Favors seemed kind of disinterested. Granted he was injured, but that is an interesting note to make.

Xiao Yao You

I certainly don't think it makes Booker obsolete. He'd be a great guy to have at the end of the bench when you need some energy.

The Jazz hope their inconsistent point guard play will be improved with the reintegration of Exum into the lineup, with Mack and Neto likely providing backup minutes.

I can't see Mack being benched unless someone beats him out and Exum as a rookie wasn't better than Mack was after they got him.

[QUOTE]Snyder related an experience from this past season when directly asked that this past week. He credited assistant Igor Kokoskov for making a suggestion with about 18 games remaining that the Jazz should up its focus from a rebuild-centric progress mode to shoot-for-the-playoffs win mode.

I certainly hope so, can't take much more of these BS seasons. What I want to see is if Hayward is a part of their longterm plans or not. He's going to get paid, we'll just see if it's the Jazz doing the paying or not.

Like the other quote said where Exum could play 1-3, that seems ideal with Exum back in case Burks gets injured or if he actually proves to be a better option than Mack and/or Neto

[quote]the Jazz need to extend the contract of head coach Quin Snyder. Snyder will be entering the last season of his contract, and the job he has done certainly warrants a long extension. There is absolutely no reason to let things play out next season where Snyder could be pried away by another team when his contract is up. Lindsey wanted to build a culture centered on player development, and Snyder is the key piece in this. Players from Gordon Hayward to Derrick Favors have grown leaps and bounds since Snyder

Xiao Yao You
04-21-2016, 08:51 PM
Adding a player to be their fourth wing either through a trade, draft or free agency is something the Jazz will need to consider. Getting a veteran and a tough nose defender would be ideal, but how many quality wings will want to sign up to play the role of the fourth wing off the bench?
If Ingles could play like he did at the end of the past two seasons all year he could be the guy but ideally Exum will be taking those minutes. I see the rotation right now as Gobert, Favors, Hayward, Hood, Burks, Mack, Neto, Lyles and Exum. The rest of team could change.

If Booker comes back, he is most likely the fourth big and sometimes fifth, depending if the Jazz add another big or if the Jazz keep Withey, whose rim protection is key to have on court when Favors and Gobert are on the bench. Booker might not want this role and could choose to leave himself. Withey was so key he didn't play. I think ideally Booker is a 5th or 6th big on a good team. He didn't complain when Gobert emerged and he wasn't playing before Enes was traded so I'm hoping a front loaded contract where they severely over pay him next year will keep him around. Any free agent they go after I would think they would want to front load it.

[quote]They could always opt to sign another center instead, but with Favors

I think they'll pay Hayward. The question is will he take less money to go elsewhere? That's why they have to play to win this year.

I see Exum as another playmaking wing with his size. Hopefully he'll be able to run the offense eventually like Mack did but right now if he can defend and hit an open shot it would be huge.

There are some question marks about Gobert's game. The center missed 18 games with a knee injury this season and his offensive game is anything but refined at this point. More troubling, however, might be the number of times Gobert was off the court as Snyder matched up against another team's small lineups. Nevertheless, Gobert is among the league's best rim protectors and a key piece of Utah's seventh-ranked defense.

He can guard anyone so that's on Snyder.

I knew Withey had to be better than Favors. Rudy-lite. Don't understand him not being the first or second big off the bench.

Projection: Improvement if Withey receives more minutes, especially if that allows Favors to play more exclusively at power forward

I can't see next year being any different.

Midrange Shooting (eight to 16 feet)

41.3% (11th) on 13.1 FGA (7th)
Assets: Mack 46.6%, Lyles 44.6%, Hayward 44.1%
Liabilities: Gobert 33.3%, Burks 33.3%, Favors 39.7%
Projection: Improvement from Favors, who should concentrate on expanding his range after jumping 12 percentage points in FG% from 5-9 feet, and Hood, via greater consistency
Surprised Hood isn't better. He needs to play in there more when his 3 isn't falling.

Neither Strength nor Weakness (9): Provides neither a significant advantage or disadvantage over average NBA competition.
Scoring at the Rim

57.8% (17th) on 28 FGA within five feet
Assets: Favors 67% on 373 FGA
Liabilities: Burke 47.1% on 136 FGA
Projection: Improved efficiency with a Exum/Mack/Neto rotation at point guard
Npt sure how you can expect it to be better. Trey at least went to the rim. Exum rarely did.

4) Improve the bench via free agency, especially by targeting a defensive specialist at the wing.

They already have that in Exum assuming he's able to rebound from his injury and Johnson.

I honestly think the bench is fine. This team just under-achieved and got hurt throughout the year. Helping the bench couldn't hurt obviously, but Snyder just needs to play Withey more and guys need to play up to their competition.

Going to have to replace Withey with someone they like. I like the bench too but you can always get better. They'll be replacing Burke and Withey or Pleiss probably both I'd think and I imagine Booker. There is a rotation spot open.

3-5 in games decided by 3 points or less and 5-5 in OT games. Inability to close out close games seems to be one of the other things that stopped them from making the playoffs.

Memphis were 6-2 in <3 games, Dallas were 5-4 in<3 and 8-4 in OT, Clippers were also 6-2 in <3 and 5-1 in OT and Rockets 4-2 in OT. Only oddity is the Blazers who were 0-6 in <3 games.

Burks is a major concern, however, as he has now missed significant time in four of five NBA seasons.

2 seasons because of injuries

The obvious glaring hole is at the starting PG position. Mack did a nice job after coming over at the trade deadline, but he’s more of a backup/spot starter than a true frontline player.

I'd say both guard positions are open. Hood doesn't look like a starter anymore than Burks does. I see them adding a rotation player possibly a starting guard.

If Utah is giving the starting role to Exum instead of a veteran, and they want to upgrade the backup role from Mack, Jeremy Lin, Jerryd Bayless or D.J. Augustin could be options.

Doubt they'd add any of them with Mack, Neto and Exum. Conley i could see but it doesn't sound like he's leaving Memphis.

Should Utah want to shift Hood to a sixth man role and add depth, they could be a destination for Harrison Barnes. Barnes would fit in very well with the current players due to his versatility. If Hood is the starter and they wanted to add some bench depth, players like Eric Gordon, Kevin Martin, O.J. Mayo and Gerald Henderson are all solid options.

Barnes might make sense. He could eventually start at the 4 possibly too. Don't want Gordon's battered body or Martin at his age at least for the rotation. Martin at the end of the bench would be great. The other two might be fits though.

Getting a quality backup who can play the stretch 4 role is also key, given the recent health concerns with Favors and Gobert. There are good possibilities available in guys like Ryan Anderson, Jared Dudley, Mirza Teletovic and Brandon Bass (assuming he opts out). All of those guys would give the Jazz a bit of a different look as they have more range on their jumper than the current bigs on the roster.

All those guys could be nice pick-ups

More than any one player, he's the best thing the Jazz have going for them right now.

This is like giving Sloan credit for the greatness of Stockton and Malone. They sucked at both ends of the court before Rudy emerged.

The Jazz have to do a lot better than finish with a 9-17 record in one-point games in the last minute, as happened this season.

How many of those games don't come down to the wire if Withey is playing though? Hard for me to get past that.

Pick #12 in the draft

Not opposed to trading it at all, but hopefully they can add some more shooting and grab someone like Denzel Valentine or Furkan Korkmaz to the backcourt. Both sound like they've got some ball handling skills too. Both solid size too at 6'6-6'7, so saves playing can't shoot, undersized Burke again.

Xiao Yao You

Can't see Burke on the team.

I think they'll look for a starting guard or at least a rotation player. They do have some cap room to do something with the draft pick but I'd guess they'll wait until free agency starts when there will be more options. Whomever they draft I hope they don't expect him to play at least until later in the season. Exum, Hood and Lyles weren't ready when their rookie seasons started and Hood was a seasoned collegiate even.

Do they go for someone like Michigan State's Denzel Valentine? He's a versatile wing who the Jazz feel can step in and play right away. Or do the Jazz draft a project like Washington's Marquese Chriss? He is a few years away, but has star upside.

"We definitely feel like there are guys at 12 who can come in and help us right away," Jazz VP of Player Personnel Walt Perrin said. "We'll know a lot more by the time the draft gets closer."

If by right away they mean by the end of next season than that's might be the case. None of Exum, Hood or Lyles were ready at the beginning of their rookie years to play at the NBA level.

For the Jazz, the time has come to win.

That time was this year. They blew it. Quit blaming it all on injuries.

Hood will be heading into his third season with the Jazz and is entrenched as the starting shooting guard, something he earned this past year.

Not sure about any of that. The frontcourt is entrenched. The guard spots should be open. Hood had problems after Mack took over the offense. Mack should be the starter until someone proves otherwise. Hood might be better off the bench sharing leadership with Alec. I think Exum or a new vet could start.

Neto was a rookie starter and at times dazzled, Going from being a starter (as he was in Spain) to being a bench player in the NBA isn't a unique transition. But possibly going from a guy who won games for the team last season (the overtime victory over the Chicago Bulls (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/chicago-bulls) stands out in my mind) to being someone who may only play in garbage time (if Mack and Exum hold things down) is going to be an egregious waste of his talent and time. Neto has a non-guaranteed contract in 2017-2018 and the Jazz would be dumb not to hold onto that. That contract is not equal to his talents. But I do wonder if he's going to be here in the long term.

As things stand now he is ahead of Exum if they are really trying to win this year which appears to be the case. Neto plays both ends of the floor. Exum was a defensive specialist. Who knows what he is now? I can certainly see all 3 in the rotation with Exum able to play 3 positions because of his size and they did play Neto and Mack together as well.

Hey Jazz friends. I don't watch too many Jazz games, but I'm surprised you aren't talking up Hood as good as he has looked the few times I got to watch him.

With that said, the Hawks need more scoring / wing help. You all need a point. Just curious of your thoughts of trading Hood away for Teague as the main pieces. Maybe add Withey / 1st for Teague our 1st? Too much in your eyes, a steal, or what? Just my mind wondering while we wait for our 2016-17 teams to be contracted!

I think eventually they will have to probably trade Hood or Burks. Not sure I would want Teague that bad especially since we haven't even seen Dante for a year. But thanks for Mack! He was a big addition.

http://www.slcdunk.com/nba-free-agency/2016/6/18/11968580/nba-salary-cap-utah-jazz-projections-flush-wish-cash

For the 2015-2016 NBA Season the Salary cap was a tidy $70 million -- a mark the Utah Jazz (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/utah-jazz) were well under even after the revolving door of 10-Day contracts and eating of guaranteed money (like they did with Grant Jerrett (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jerregr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), who did not play a single minute for the team). Including training camp roster additions the team spent $64.8 / 70.0 of their available capspace in 2015-2016.
It's not over yet. They can still use that cap space before free agency starts.

As it stands the Jazz only have one free agent right now, Trevor Booker (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/112570/trevor-booker), and he's not worth more than $8 million a year.
No but with all that money they could overpay him(or someone else) this season and have them on the cheap after that.

But on the eve of Jazz free agency years and years of experience have led me to this conclusion -- save for that one year where the team paid Andrei Kirilenko (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/kirilan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Carlos Arroyo (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/arroyca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and Gordan Giricek (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/giricgo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) the same off-season where they poached "free agent" Carlos Boozer (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/boozeca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) from the Cleveland Cavaliers (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/cleveland-cavaliers) and the Detroit Pistons (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/detroit-pistons) did not match the offer for their Restricted Free Agent bigman Mehmet Okur (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/okurme01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com). To balance that one year of opening the vault we've had generations where our best free agent signings have been Chris Morris (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/morrich01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) and John Lucas III (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lucasjo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com). And the immortal Josh Howard (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/howarjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com).
That's not when they spent big. The years they gave Okur his last contract(bad move) were when they went over the tax line.

Xiao Yao You
06-18-2016, 12:01 PM
So there's money out there, earmarked, for star Gordon Hayward (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (opting out after this upcoming season, by the way; even guys like Dirk Nowitzki (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nowitdi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) opted out, and he has no desire to leave the Dallas Mavericks (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/dallas-mavericks); it's just economics), star Rudy Gobert (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), star Dante Exum (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and star Derrick Favors (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/favorde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) and/or Rodney Hood (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hoodro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com).
stars? There is no money earmarked for Exum until he shows he can play in the league.

There's no way the Jazz go over the salary cap or ever get close to the luxury tax again when the team is "playoff competitive"
going to be hard not to after this year or next anyway.

I really don't want to see the team spend $20 million of that $31 on Trevor Booker (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/booketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) and Jared Dudley (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/dudleja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com). That's signing off on purchasing the S.S. Doldrums in my books. That would be giving away big money to guys who do not deserve it, which leads to the next lockout. Better to save your cap than waste it. Especially if our younger guys will one day earn it.
Again it depends on how you spend it. If you front load contracts you can overpay this year and have good players on the cheap after that.

No mention of trades either. Everyone is talking about free agency but there will be a lot more movement with trades I would imagine. What is a bad contract today won't necessarily be in a couple weeks. Pretty much everyone is available.

No mention of Favors possibly getting a new deal either. Give Favors and a free agent the money. Not too hard to spend. The biggest problem might be that everyone has money and some of them will be trying to do the same things.

The good news is that during the 2015-16 season, the Utah Jazz's overall defensive efficiency improved from 12th to seventh best in the NBA from the year before.

They were 1st after the Kanter trade so this year's in consistency was disappointing. They ended strong again at least.

"We're a good defensive rebounding team and, for whatever reason that last five minutes, maybe that's me.

So Burks' surgery, however minor, served as a nice reminder that the Jazz need another shooting guard, or another small forward. Whichever it is doesn't especially matter. As long this player can add to the bench production, and shoot the ball. Those, essentially, are the two requirements.

Hopefully they already have their guy in Dante. If he can defend and hit a corner 3 I see him starting at the 2 possibly. Makes more sense than him starting over Mack at the 1 or even backing up Mack based on what we've seen. Ingles has looked like a rotation player at the end of his two seasons. Not sure why he can't do so early on. Johnson is a great defender/energy guy to have at the end of the bench too.

It isn't known whether Utah will use Thursday's NBA draft to select a wing, or whether the Jazz will wait until free agency.

maybe both or neither?

An intriguing dynamic with the group is the type of prospect the Jazz could potentially latch on to. In Murray, or Richardson, or Turkish guard Furkan Korkmaz, or Florida State's Malik Beasley, there is untapped potential. These are young prospects with plenty of room to grow. At the same time, they may not be ready to help instantly. And with the Jazz looking to lock in on a postseason run next year, that may not be the way they want to go.

So what is NBA ready to these guys? To me it would be stepping onto the court in game one next season and being able to play at a high level off the bench at least. That guy they will get after June. Hood, Exum and Lyles weren't NBA ready by that standard. By the end of the year they were. That's what I'd be expecting from whomever they get this year. D-league to start the year. We saw these guys occasionally under Jerry but Quin's system I believe is really difficult so I'm not sure we'll see it with him.

On the other hand, someone like Denzel Valentine from Michigan State is experienced. He's played four years of college basketball.

Hood had been in school for 4 years too.

If they traded a core player or two to reach any meaningful slot in the draft, that would only decelerate the rebuilding process, and who around here wants to live through any more non-playoff seasons? So if the Jazz go anywhere in this draft order, it has to be down or out.

Can't say I agree. I don't think they would necessarily have to give up any of their core to move up. It should be their last year drafting this high for quite a while so if they can move up and get someone they like without giving up the core I'd be all for it.

Any move the Jazz make this summer ultimately should be designed with the the immediate future in mind. The Jazz have to get older, not younger. If they can get a veteran player in a trade that involves the No. 12 pick, they should do it. If they can trade down or even out of the first round, simply forcing themselves to make other moves that add some skill and experience, they should do it.

I agree they need to get older but right now I see them getting one proven rotation guy. If they do that with their pick than they are pretty much done before free agency even starts and there should be more options there.

Baldwin is big enough and versatile enough to play both guard positions, and if he can take playing time away from Raul Neto, that's a good sign.

If Dante can take minutes from Neto or Mack that's good. Right now he isn't as good Johnson and Ingles.

If not, he'll lead the Salt Lake City Stars of the D-League.

Yes finally!

They need somebody like Richard Jefferson. The irony of that statement involves how Jefferson symbolized everything that was wrong about the Jazz's 2013-14 season, when they went 25-57 with Jefferson as a starting forward, cleverly positioned to make the Jazz look like they were sort of trying to win. Or maybe he was just keeping younger teammates off the floor, stunting their development.

:facepalm

They're not going to get anybody like that at No. 12, and they would have to sacrifice too much to move into a much higher draft position.

The one thing I read said there is a big drop off after 11 so even moving one spot could be big and that won't cost much.

It's true that they're too good to have the No. 12 pick make an impact this coming season,

Wrong. I can see someone helping them later on in the year. Just wouldn't expect it from the get go.

Do expect: someone who is an immediate upgrade over some of our rotation guys from last year's injury plagued season.

I would expect one of the worst guys on the roster at the start. It's where I'd put Exum until he shows otherwise too.

I think the Jazz know that the #42 is a good enough asset to move in a package. The other picks (#52 and #60) are worth almost nothing.

Bet the Spurs would get someone good to stash for a while.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865656659/Utah-Jazz-Quality-and-depth-of-Jazz-bench-definitely-in-need-of-an-upgrade.html

Outside of Trey Lyles, who stepped up and performed well as a rookie forward last season, and perhaps injury-plagued shooting guard Alec Burks, the rest of Utah's reserves often proved to be less than stellar during the 2015-16 NBA campaign.
Be nice if these guys even watched the games before they wrote stuff. Lyles was one of their worst players. He had his moments.

Their bench wasn't that bad. They weren't the ones on the court when they were losing games late. I could see most of them being back in fact.

Locke attributes Utah's late-game struggles in close contests to a lack of quality depth, which allowed games to remain tight when a better bench might've been capable of building on what the starters had, well, started and extending a lead rather than falling behind or treading water and merely keeping the game close.
Withey plays and there would gave been a lot less close games. Blame the coach not the bench.

"When you get into the analytics of lining up all the data, whenever we have our core guys on the floor together, we were fabulous," Locke said, speaking of Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Rudy Gobert, Rodney Hood and Lyles, with either Shelvin Mack or Raul Neto at point guard.
Forget what the analytics say about Withey. Make the coach look bad.

One NBA insider said the Jazz simply didn't have much NBA-caliber talent on their bench.

"Look around the league, and guys like Trey Burke and Raul Neto probably wouldn't play for anybody else but the 76ers," he said, speaking under the condition of anonymity.

I can see all their players in the league for other teams. Burke is the biggest question mark for me if he can't hit the 3 but as a 3rd pg he'd be pretty good to have around.

Neto is certainly an NBA back-up caliber guard at least. He can hit the 3 and play d and run the pick and roll. What else do you want? :confusedshrug:

One popular rumor has been Gordon Hayward's departure for Boston in exchange for the No. 3 pick, but ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nba/draft2016/story/_/id/16407161/boston-celtics-rebuffed-bid-swap-no-3-draft-pick-established-veteran) and CBS Sports (http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/report-gordon-hayward-off-the-trade-table-for-utah-jazz/) reported that the Utah Jazz say that won't happen.

ESPN's report said that the Celtics are pursuing Chicago's Jimmy Butler, Jabari Parker and Khris Middleton of Milwaukee and Hayward.

The Hayward rumor has perhaps been further fueled by the fact that the Jazz swingman played at Butler for Boston head coach Brad Stevens.
A conflicting report to ESPN's has emerged, via tweets from Brian Geltzeiler of hoopscritic.com.

Jody Genessy of the Deseret News refuted Geltzeiler's claim.

The ensuing days should be interesting for Utah fans.

The rumor to the Suns sounds better with Knight and their two picks. Might be hard to pass on that one.

If Utah loses him they admit that they failed in their development over the last few seasons before Quin Snyder (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/111859/quin-snyder) was hired, and that the franchise, from their PR goons to their media mouthpieces, were just spinning their wheels going nowhere but trying to sell tickets.

He's not playing for Team Australia in the Rio 2016 Olympics this year. And we haven't seen him SINCE the SLCSL. He has missed a lot of game time. We may see Trey Lyles (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lylestr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and we will not be seeing Raul Neto (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/netora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (he is in Brazil).

The Knight deal I'd probably do. I wouldn't expect much else from the Jazz this off-season with this move though.

Look for an upgrade with your bigs not that any of them will be as good as Withey. Someone that might not play every night but can play when called upon. Sign Favors to an extension if you can. Sign Gobert if he wants to take a cheaper deal now. Trade Mack, Burke, Withey and maybe Pleiss. Maybe re-sign Booker for a non rotation role. Might sign some fringe rotation guys and fringe NBA guys to make camp as competitive as possible. With Withey and Johnson on non guaranteed deals and the other end of the bench guys on cheap expiring deals there's no reason everyone shouldn't earn their spot this year.

The draft just got less interesting. Wonder what they'll do for an encore tomorrow?

A shooting center or a three-and-D wing are some other trending player traits the Jazz could look. Having a wing player who can take some of the burden off Gordon Hayward by guarding the opposing team's best offensive wing would be huge. A shooting five man would supply the coaching staff with more flexibility in regards to matchups.

They might already have these guys in Exum and Lyles. I see them going small with Lyles at the 5 and Hayward or maybe Hood at the 4.

Hopefully having a guy like Hill, who is experienced and can hit the 3, will be able to help in those close games where we lost the majority of them last year.

He projects as Utah's starter next season, which moves Dante Exum to the bench, as he gets acclimated to playing again after recovering from a torn ACL.

Mack should have already moved Exum to the bench and Neto pushed him to another position possibly. I can see Hill starting at either guard spot or coming off the bench. All really comes down to Exum and where he's at. Hill is another big piece to the rotation regardless. Their oldest guy now but in his prime. Their best shooter. He defends. He handles. Championship experience. Great contract. Can they pay him, Gordon, Gobert and possibly Mack next year and leave money for those to follow though?

Trey Burke is on the trade block, Shevin Mack, whom the Jazz traded for in February, has a non-guaranteed contract until early July.

Got to think they pick up his option. It's too small not to and he was too good not to. They should be able to move him if they have to. If Dante isn't ready I'd roll with him.

Currently, the Jazz have five point guards on the roster, a situation that obviously needs to be alleviated.

Neto and Mack are the only ones I'd call pure pg's right now and they played together at times. Exum I can see at 3 positions. At least one will have to go maybe 2.

But with this acquisition, Exum gets the chance to be brought along more slowly, and without as much pressure.

It shouldn't change things reallyas far as that goes. Mack and Neto were both better than Exum was as a rookie and Johnson basically can fill the role of perimeter defender that Exum did.

The Jazz get better at the position, and they send a clear message to Hayward, who will be a free agent after next season, that they are attempting to improve in the short term.

Their rotation gets better. I could see him playing mostly the 2 especially if Exum ever starts doing what he has been hyped to do eventually.

First, he brings great size to the back court. At 6-3, 190 lbs, Hill can match up well with the more physical guards. With a 6-9 wingspan, his length allows him to hold his own against taller opponents. After struggling a bit defensively with shorter players Raul Neto and Trey Burke, the Jazz have successfully addressed this by bringing on Hill and Shelvin Mack, guys whose size help tremendously.

I'd say Neto was better on D than Mack and he's listed an inch shorter. Doubt he has the length Hill does though.

In four short months, they have brought on Mack and Hill and are welcoming back a healthy Exum.

Remains to be seen about Exum's health.

Hanlan played last season in Latvia and could one day be a solid pro, but he's still a year or two away from making a stab at the NBA.
We'll see in summer league hopefully. He could be a cheap contract in the next couple years.

Tomic is never going to leave the lovely Spanish weather, all of his wealth, and his big dawg status in his league. (Seriously, why would he ever want to come to America to get dunked on by DeAndre Jordan (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordade01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Andre Drummond (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/drumman01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Rudy Gobert (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Dwight Howard (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/howardw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and so on?)
You never know. He's still in his prime.

Because Maker -- as much as I love big black guys with crazy names -- isn't a difference maker right now for a club trying to make the playoffs.
Who is really? :confusedshrug:

Some of them, like Denzel, could even be a rotation player as a rookie because he is a college Senior. If one of them fall to an acceptable range for Lindsey I do expect him to pull the trigger. Probably not a point guard right now because the team has five (http://www.slcdunk.com/nba-trades-and-deadline/2016/6/22/12005966/utah-jazz-atlanta-hawks-indiana-pacers-trade-george-hill-jeff-teague), but you know, whatever.
Hood had 4 years of college but shouldn't have been in the rotation until late in the year. I could see them taking a pg still. Burke and Mack gone. Exum still a big guard who hasn't shown he's a pg. Hill a combo.

Looking at the roster it's clear that if an upgrade can be had, we'd still like one at the wing spot.
Hayward/Hood/Burks/Hill/Ingles/Johnson/Exum. Not so clear to me.

But the Jazz are a playoff team now. Like, for real.
should have been anyway. The GM is finally behind the idea of winning is the difference between last year and now.

In other news Giannis Antetokounmpo (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/antetgi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) is still growing. I hope Dante Exum is doing the same.

Tibor Pleiss (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pleisti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) gets the nod here because he's actually under contract.
Right now that shouldn't be too much of a concern. I could see them cutting any of the guys at the end of the bench with the money they need to spend.

He is a challenge to get on the floor because he's just not ready for the speed of the American game right now, or the physicality. Like Ingles, if there's an upgrade here (and there could be just in the non-guaranteed section) you should try to take it.
I think they may be able to get way with him as the 4th big who plays a few minutes here and there depending on match-ups based on what he showed in those couple games where he got quality minutes after his D-league call-up.

He has gotten better every year in the league
No actually he got worse in his 2nd year.

After starting most of last season now he is going to be on the deep bench again.
Not so sure of that. You got to have role players. He hits open 3's and defends. That's what they asked of him. When they let him run the team like Mack he was able to run the pick and roll and penetrate and make plays. He's got to play somewhere.

Mack can be replaced now that Hill is on the team -- taking over both the point guard starting spot for the time being, and also being a floor general and veteran presence.
I think that might happen but not so sure it's the right move until we see what Dante is ready to contribute. No one ran the team better than Mack. Don't think that is Hill's strong suit either and Dante hasn't shown it outside one summer league game.

Chris Johnson (http://www.basketball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Chris+Johnson&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) is an NBA Player. I've been harsh to him in the past, but he was given an opportunity last season and he did his best. He fills out a roster and should be used in emergencies.
Not just emergencies. Sometimes you need a spark and guys like Booker, CJ and Demarre can bring that. Other times you need to slow people like Harden or Klay down and Johnson might be your best bet. He's a corner 3 away from being their Bruce Bowen.

I think you almost have to try to figure out a way to bring him back.
I think he has to go if you're not going to play him.

But I don't know if he showed enough of his basketball game in order to be asked to return.
Sure he did. For the right price and in the right role any team would love to have him. See Johnson. He was a big part in a lot of wins.

These are impossibly big numbers, and it's likely that the Jazz won't ever get close to the tax in the next few off-seasons (http://www.slcdunk.com/nba-free-agency/2016/6/18/11968580/nba-salary-cap-utah-jazz-projections-flush-wish-cash). The next few seasons things continue to be crazy.
Next year for sure they could be close. This year possibly. Hill and Favors extensions and filling out the end of bench could do that.

Of course, Kevin Durant (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) is only paying lip-service when he mentions the Jazz small market teams (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/16371994/kevin-durant-free-agency-basketball-decision) as a possible destination (like he did in a recent interview).
I don't think so. I think he'd go where he thought he had the best chance to win. Not sure that is Utah though.

The first thing you notice here is that Dante Exum (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) is starting, not Hill. It's fair to say that Hill will start at the beginning of the season, but as a Jazz fan you HOPE that Exum is good enough to start mid-way though to the finish of the season and surpass Hill.
Mack probably should be the starting pg with Hill at the 2 until Exum proves otherwise and than I'd think Hill/Exum in the long term.

Hood catches fire and gets cold. You can survive with some game to game fluctuation, but Hood gets extremely cold and extremely hot. It's hard to bank on.
Which I think makes him a bench player.

George Hill is possibly the best point guard on the team since Deron Williams (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willide01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and could be the best back-up point guard on the team since John Stockton (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/stockjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) was Rickey Green (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/greenri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com)'s caddy.
Hill starts because of his D and all the spot ups he will get with Favors and Hayward and even at his height, with his length he will be able to start at either spot. Yeah like John he was backing up a lesser player unlike Rickey Exum was not coming off an all-star year.

One of the main reasons why I am (at least for now) putting Hill on the bench is because I did not want to start THREE guys in contract years.
Doesn't matter if he starts or not. He's getting paid because he's good.

Alec Burks (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/burksal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) is probably good enough to start, but he didn't go to Duke University like Rodney did.
That was last year. I think they'll start whoever fits best with the starting front court which is set and the guy opposite him at guard.

He is making an awful lot of money for someone who misses a lot of games
This year he did. His contract is very friendly now if he can stay on the court.

Lyles, at 20, needs a lot of development.
Not really. Offensively he plays like another one of their wings. I liked what I saw defensively. I think he can become more than passable there as well.

Bolomboy's skill set could very well put him line to possibly replace Jazz power forward Trevor Booker, who spent the last two seasons in Utah but is currently a free agent, on the Jazz roster.

If he's on the roster I certainly wouldn't expect him to be playing at least at the beginning of the year. They see him as a nice local draw to their D-league team if anything.

But why pick up two more point guards? They already got George Hill. I honestly don't see Marcus Paige or Tyrone Wallace making the roster.

Why does everyone think in the short term? These guys might help the Jazz someday like Neto last year. A big part of the Spurs success is they have a lot bigger roster than everyone else because of all the good players they have stashed away. In a couple years these guys could be cheap contracts when the Jazz have little money to spend. The one guy is a 6'5" combo guard. Another multi skilled guy with size.

Those possibilities include signing one or both of the drafted guards to a D-League contract, bypassing the Jazz roster and going straight to the Stars.

I imagine that's what the Jazz would like to do that with all of them but it's a lot less money than Hanlan made abroad I'm sure. Hopefully Hanlan will be in the summer leagues with these guys too so we can see how they compare and how he's improved.

Thomas' 5-9 height was his perceived liability. Wallace's weakness is outside shooting. He shot 29.8 percent from 3-point range as a senior, while averaging 15.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists. Wallace scored 26 points against Utah in Cal's overtime loss in the Pac-12 tournament semifinals in March.

NBA teams "love his all-around game," Cal coach Cuonzo Martin said in a school news release this week. "The one thing they question is his ability to hit the 3-point shot. But everything else, they really like. They like his length, his size, his athleticism, his ability to defend, to rebound at that size."

Sounds a lot like the guys they already have. Is his shot broken?

Wallace is another big point guard, he is 6'6 in shoes and has a 6'9.50" wingspan -- that's what we already measure in Dante Exum (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/246134/dante-exum), and that wingspan is only 0.50" longer than that of the much shorter George Hill (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/50397/george-hill). Wallace is not really remarkable but he has a defensive potential with his length. He's even longer than Marcus Paige and could be even more deadly.

This guy sounds like he could be something if they can fix his shot.

He is now the billionth point guard on the team right now. Dante Exum, George Hill, Raul Neto (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/198045/raul-neto), and Trey Burke have contracts for next season that are on the books. Shelvin Mack (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/150210/shelvin-mack) does not, but he has a non-guaranteed deal that become guaranteed in about two weeks. Utah holds the draft rights to 2015 #42 pick Olivier Hanlan (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/257522/olivier-hanlan), and also earlier in this draft the 2016 #55 Marcus Paige. The selection of Wallace makes him now the 8th.
Something's gotta give.

Paige is a 6'2 ball hawk who is a 22 year old Senior. This helps him on defense and his 1.1 spg average isn't a joke. He wasn't that high on the consensus list, in the 70s out of over 260 players, but the people who had him on their big boards (Chad Ford, ESPN; Jonathan Givony, Draft Express; Sam Vecenie, CBS Sports; Kevin O'Connor, or everywhere; and AllThatAmar) did feel like he had a shot. And yeah, he was on my list (https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/6700361/NBA_Draft_2016_Marcus_Paige.0.PNG). What I like about him, and what I suspect the Jazz brass like about him, is his ability to be a three and d point guard. Hanlan was drafted by the Jazz in the second round last year. He played summer league, but went overseas to Lithuania, essentially as a draft-and-stash prospect. He is a combination guard, a little more shooting guard than point guard. He was uneven for the Jazz last season in summer league, but it will be interesting to see if his overall game and skillset have grown after a year across waters.

He sucked but you could see he was getting better each game so that was encouraging.

Exum is still the future of the franchise at point guard.
They hope but with 3 guys on the roster who have shown more than him and aren't coming off a serious knee injury he has his work cut out for him.

Until then, Hill projects as Utah's starting point guard — and if needed, Hill and Exum can play together pretty easily. They both are big for their position, both are good defenders and passers, and both can defend more than one spot. So the chemistry between the two — on paper — shouldn't be an issue.
Hill projects as a rotation player. I'm not convinced he can run the team better than Mack did. Exum has to prove he can defend still.

The Jazz didn't make the postseason for the fourth consecutive season because of injuries and depth; too much of the former, too little of the latter.
They didn't make it because before the deal for a 3rd string pg at the trading deadline it looked as if they were tanking again. The best part of this deal in addition to the previous one it appears that are playing to win finally. Maybe Withey will even play?

Lindsey acquired Hill to provide some quality depth at the point guard position. Third-year guard Dante Exum is expected to be ready to play when the season begins in the fall after suffering an ACL tear last summer, but just how effective he can be is in question.
If he's not effective he shouldn't be playing period! They got Hill because he's good. Not necessarily to play 1.

Last season, Utah head coach Quin Snyder was forced to start rookie Raul Neto until a trade deadline deal brought Shelvin Mack from Atlanta. While Mack was serviceable, production from the position suffered throughout the year.
He wasn't forced to start Neto. A wing starting line-up was possible as was Burke. Neto played the role well and I think if he'd been given the chance could have played a role closer to what Mack did. Mack was one of their best players so don't say the position suffered with him.

Snyder will ultimately have to decide how much playing time each will get, but Hill gives the coach more options at point guard than he had last season.
Or at least better options.

While the help Hill provides at point guard was the primary reason for acquiring him
I really don't see this. They see him as someone that can fit with the other players starting, coming off the bench and at both guard positions. With his length you might even be able to go really small with him at the 3 at times.

That ability will not only allow Utah head coach Quin Snyder more lineup flexibility, but it will also be a boon if Alec Burks continues to be plagued by injuries like he has been the past two seasons.
Tired of hearing this too. The injury from two years ago was an old injury so despite the way Alec plays I'm not ready to say he's injury prone.

Of course, the addition of Hill put the number of point guards on the Jazz roster at five, meaning it’s likely at least two will not be on the team come fall. Trey Burke is sure to be one of them, as the former lottery pick fell out Snyder’s rotation at the end of the season. If Lindsey can’t find a way to trade him, look for his contract to be bought out.
Tired of this as well. Yes Jerry liked 3 pg's. They only carried 2 last year and to me only Mack and Neto are really pg's. Hill is a combo. Burke is a shooting pg at best. Exum is a wing that could guard pg's and they hope he can play the point one day. I can see them carrying more than 3 certainly.

I can also see Trey being on the team. I'm sure they will try to trade him and make him happy but I could see them carrying him on the roster if they can't. It's the Jazz we're talking about here!

Since Hill will become a free agent next summer, the Jazz gain the benefit of his services during a year in which there’s uncertainty with Exum, but they also maintain the flexibility of moving on from him if Exum makes great strides this season.
Even if Dante steps up Hill is one of your best players. They see him long term. Don't think they make the trade if they think he's just a rental.

Six. Dennis Lindsey’s summer plans: We’re gonna go into the free agent market and be very aggressive. We do want to spend our money fundamentally. If we can’t spend it fundamentally, then we’ll certainly save all of it, all the room that we have or a portion of it for the extensions that we have coming in the next few seasons. So, what we don’t wanna do is extend an amount on a player and then it puts pressure a year or two down the line.
There it is. He's already preparing us for them sitting pat the rest of the off-season. Depends on who you're signing as far as pressure down the line. If you can get Conley you might just have to be pressured later I'm afraid.

Ten. Dennis Lindsey on draft trade that didn’t happen: There was one player, a really good player I can’t name, but he and his prominent agent were really working hard to try to get here during the draft, and I just couldn’t pull it off.

Looking at the roster right now there's a glaring hole at shooting guard. There are plenty of bigs. There are three point guards who all want the ball in their hands. In a wing oriented league the Jazz aren't really bringing much to the table right now with O'Brien and Ford.

The picks are combo guards with size and length. Don't believe Hanlan played the point last year in summer league. They obviously think Ford and O'brien bring something to the table. Partially guaranteed contract for Ford.

Marcus Paige -- if he makes the team, and with the team as it is right now, he would be the 6th stringerHe will be in the D-league if he makes it and maybe if he doesn't.

There just isn't space right now in the regular rotation for this guy.

There's always room if you can play. No reason to expect any rookie to be a rotation guy on this team.

Rodney Hood (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hoodro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) is the other starter He was the other starter. No reason I see that that should be in stone.

Dante Exum is going to need some playing time at the wing this yearIf he deserves it.

(http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lylestr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com)Trey Lyles (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lylestr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) may see some time at the three this year too, who knows?I see him playing the 5 not the 3

One thing is clear though, it's not likely that he starts his professional career on an NBA team, unless you count summer league. I can see one of these guys making the team and playing in the D-league.

We retain their rights no matter the route they go.

If they insist on being in fall camp and don't make the team we don't.

http://www.slcdunk.com/the-downbeat/2016/6/27/12040098/nba-draft-2016-utah-jazz-forward-joel-bolomboy-downbeat

When you directly compare him to Trey Lyles (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lylestr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), who is younger by two years, who has a much more robust offensive game (not just shooting range or runners or passing) it's clear why one was a lottery pick and the other a 2nd rounder after four years of college play.

Playing 4 years is one reason he wasn't picked higher.

Trey Lyles (2nd string power forward, can fill in at small forward and center depending on injuries)

Played 3 in college. Doesn't mean he can play it here.

Jeff Withey (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/witheje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (3rd string center)

joke! :facepalm

If Bolomboy makes the team he is pretty much only over Pleiss in the depth chart.

Could be ahead of Withey who they don't like. Hard to put him above Pleiss since Pleiss has already shown something above the Big Sky.

Bolomboy making the team only exists in a world where he plays really well in summer league and training camp, *and* the team doesn't add any other bigmen in NBA Free Agency (http://www.sbnation.com/nba-free-agency). There's a chance to upgrade this roster in July. An actual stretch big at power forward (if the team can get one) shakes things up a bit and drops Joel down to 4th string power forward, and likely out of the NBA. Of course, the team is more likely to make a trade or two that involves free agency, and not sign a guy outright. As a result, Joel may make the team if other guys are traded away . . . or he, himself, may be traded.

Easy to see him on the team if he plays well in summer league. They have plenty of roster spots to be had and money to be given out.

I believe that Trevor Booker may be able to get a big raise this off-season, and if that was to happen it's likely that it wouldn't be with the Jazz.

front loaded

Depending on what the roster looks like there could be about 5 to 10 minutes available for a 2nd round rookie.

D-league to start.

Even thinking about Burks and Hayward being able to play some point, Id consider keeping just having Hill and Exum if it means not cutting Bolomboy.

Yeah let's get rid of a couple of our best players just because! :coleman:

Sources say the Jazz have expressed interest in Solomon Hill, a small forward from the Indiana Pacers. New Orleans forward Ryan Anderson is someone the Jazz have interest in, as well as Miami Heat forward Luol Deng.
So what happens to Lyles and others? They've been so worried about blocking their young guys and now are? I think if they sign anyone else other than a big they are saying Exum isn't ready for the start of the season. I still think the money will go to Favors mostly if anyone and that they are blowing a lot of hot air as usual.

That's put the Jazz squarely in win-now mode.
Would love to know why they weren't after being the 6th best team in the league at the end of 2015 :confusedshrug:

That solidified a position of need for the Jazz, and will give Utah a veteran to run its offense.

You mean another vet. Still not sure he'll be at the 1. The Jazz certainly haven't said he's the pg period.

Utah has seven point guards on its roster, a situation Lindsey says will be alleviated by opening night.
You think? Without the rookies and Burke they have 4 which I could see since only 2 are pure pg's..

It all adds up to what could be a busy few weeks for the Jazz. And these next few weeks could greatly impact whether the Jazz are a playoff contender, entering the 2016-2017 regular season.

Seriously? They should have been thinking 50 wins and the 2nd round a year ago and they certainly should be with the addition of Hill. Let's quit making excuses.

Things could be tougher for Wallace and Paige, who will find themselves fighting for the opportunity in a crowded backcourt picture. The Jazz already have five other point guards under contract, and last year's second-round pick, Olivier Hanlan, will be a part of the point guard mix during summer league.

Only 2 pure pg's. All of these guys can make the team if they show they can play.

Consensus is that the Jazz need an upgrade at the 4th wing rotation spot: somebody that allows Ingles to be used situationally as a specialist and provides Utah with injury insurance. But what if they already have their fourth wing? What if their fourth wing is Burks?

With Hill and maybe Exum plus Ingles who has looked like a rotation player late in the season and Johnson they look deep to me.

An argument could be made that, if the Jazz are really looking to apply pressure in the West, they could use something more than deep bench reinforcements. Maybe the goal is someone who is good enough to play major minutes, maybe even contend with Hood for a starting spot alongside Hayward2 (http://saltcityhoops.com/scouring-the-market-part-i-wings/#note-2).

Hill! I certainly don't see Hood as the automatic starter. He started last year because they thought he and Neto fit best with the big 3. He didn't fit as well with Mack who should be the starter right now and his streakiness and lack of D makes me think he might be better off on the bench.

He's an average point guard who has reached his plateau as a player, having already played eight seasons to show what he can do.

He's not an average player and I'm still not convinced he'll be playing that much 1.

It's being said that Hill will make it less stressful for Dante Exum (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/246134/dante-exum) to get back to the floor and build up minutes quickly. So the trade signals that the Jazz have already deemed Exum as the point guard of the future.
"Already" because Exum only has played a rookie season. And in that one season, Exum shot an abysmal 34.9 percent from the floor and a sad 31.4 and 62.5 percent from the free-throw and three-point lines. Averages of 4.8 points, 2.4 assists and 1.4 turnovers in a relatively high 22.2 minutes per game also were not impressive.

Finally someone gets it!

This year, a seasoned point guard was more attainable through trade.

Really? Free agency hasn't even started.

Mack wasn't half the point guard George Hill was

He actually may have been better.

, but he led the Utah Jazz to a second half surge because he was better than Trey Burke and Raul Neto (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/198045/raul-neto?_ga=1.6172723.1636096846.1453995768).

I still think Neto had a lot of what we saw from Mack in him. They didn't ask him to do it much as a rookie. He was a spot up shooter and defender.

Like Withey? :confusedshrug:

Leuer makes on-paper sense as a legitimate center who shot 38% from three last year, but keep in mind that he has averaged less than 700 minutes a year so far in five NBA seasons3 (http://saltcityhoops.com/scouring-the-free-agent-market-part-ii-bigs/#note-3).

I wouldn't be expecting much for the right price. He'd be a good 5th or 6th big.

Meyers Leonard would be a great fit for Utah, but he probably wants (and will probably get) a lot of money and a chance to play a bigger role. He just averaged 22mpg for a playoff team, after all.

Reading between the lines it seems like after Trey lost his starting spot to Dante Exum waay back in 2014 they had looked into trading him at the 2015 trade deadline. The 2016 deadline passed with him still on the roster. The Jazz failed to move him on draft nights in 2015 or 2016 as well. And didn't move him during 2016 NBA Free Agency (http://www.sbnation.com/nba-free-agency). If they were shopping him -- which it seems like they were -- they haven't found anything they wanted in return, or anything at the price they were willing to pay. Part of the problem is that Burke, even though he was a Top 10 lotto pick, doesn't have an expensive contract, even today in his terminal year it's still worth under $4 million dollars. The headaches other teams want to be rid of all seem to be much more expensive. The other part of the problem may be trying to return to previously held potential value. Trey Burke was traded up for on the 2013 Draft night, with the Jazz giving up the #14 (Shabazz Muhammad (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/198033/shabazz-muhammad)) and the #21 (Gorgui Dieng (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/198031/gorgui-dieng)) to do so. I don't think the current market value for Burke is two 1st rounders anymore. But surely there could have been an actual market value for Trey Burke that the team could have sustained.

Tells me know one wants him. He doesn't hit the 3. Doesn't pass. Doesn't play d. You think anyone wants that?

It's truly a remarkable thing for a lottery team, who remains in the lottery for years in a row, to be able to devalue their own assets during their rookie contract. That's not usually how that works. (But it is the Jazz way!)

So they are supposed to play crappy players so they increase their value? That's what happened his rookie year. He played. Wasn't that great but who cares.

El Kabong

I think with him, at the moment at least, it's just a case of teams having him as their backup plan. Go for a good free agent first, but if you can't get him, then maybe go for a trade for Burke instead.

I'd wonder if Charlotte would have any interest in him since they'll likely lose Lin as their backup PG. Sacremento are looking for guards, could maybe sell them on him being a 3 point heater off the bench for them.
