http://www.ksl.com/?sid=42387123&nid=304&title=why-isnt-dante-exum-playing
In short, the biggest reason is because the Jazz have been pretty bad with Exum on the court. With Exum on the court, the Jazz are scoring 95.1 points per 100 possessions. With Exum off the court, the Jazz score 111.5 points per 100 possessions.
Even on the defensive end, the Jazz improve when Exum is benched. The Jazz give up 101.5 points per 100 possessions when Exum's in, and that goes down to 97.4 points per 100 possessions when Exum sits.
That shows up in Utah's win-loss record. When Exum plays 23 minutes or more, the Jazz are 1-7. When he plays less, the Jazz are 9-1.
But shouldn't he play anyway because he is young and has potential?
When Exum's in the game, it's usually meant that the bench is in.
except for all those games he started. :facepalm
Exum's spacing in the corner, but Walker is so far in the paint that he sees the opportunity to steal the ball on the other side of the floor, leading to two Hornets points. Despite similar shooting percentages, it seems teams feel more comfortable leaving Exum wide open than Mack.
Something I noticed too so no matter how much he attacks the rim now he still has to hit outside enough to keep the other team honest.
Isn't it better for the Jazz long-term to play Dante Exum?
Not if you lose Hayward because you lose too many games
The real question is despite no one outside Rudy, Hill, Favors, Hayward and Hood being consistent at all why has Neto not been given a chance? I'd say he's a better defender than Mack at worst he's a nuisance. He shoots better. He can run the offense and is unselfish with less turnovers than Mack too. :confusedshrug:

It's accurate to say that Hill, who came to Utah via a trade for the No. 12 pick in the draft and who has this year left on his contract, has become a most significant player. Along with Gobert, his influence on the outcomes of games is unmistakable.
Someone has been paying attention for a change. Hill hasn't looked as good the past couple for some reason though.

Or you could bring Hood off the bench instead of staggering Hood and Hayward and they all could be good. Hood's play certainly complicates things. Him or Favors will have to go eventually I'd think.
Even better he's starting to pass and not settle for 3's
What do you think their plan is with Dante? He's young and needs playing time, but it looks like Snyder is dumping him for more of a "Win-now" mentality. Pretty sure he said he thinks Mack is playing better defensively (I don't know about that) and is more of a spark off the bench (I agree).
And hood coming off the bench? I'm fine with him right where he is, but who would start in his place? Johnson? Exum?
Also, Lyles was worrying me for a while, but now I feel much better that it appears he is finally returning to his 2015-2016 form. Very glad to have either him or Diaw on the floor
Xiao Yao You
11-30-2016, 06:55 PM
I'd send Dante to the D-league. Let him show he can play at that level. It's a joke that Neto hasn't even had a chance considering no one has really been consistent off the bench.
I'd probably start Ingles. Hood was doing most of his damage with the 2nd unit anyway. Not enough balls to go around with the starters especially if Favors ever gets healthy. Rudy needs more touches too.
Like Withey on the floor too.

When healthy, Favors serves as a second rim protector with Rudy Gobert, creating a lethal frontcourt defensively. His ability to slide over from power forward to center when Gobert is off the floor is a luxury few teams have.
I'll take Withey anyday over Favors as a rim protector. There's a reason the Jazz sucked before Rudy emerged.
Favors has missed seven consecutive games with the bone contusion and still has no timetable for his return. But his agent, Wallace Prather, says he's progressing and he is experiencing "very limited pain."
good news maybe :confusedshrug:
WayOfWad3
11-30-2016, 10:51 PM
Withey always does a good job. Really hope he continues to get time even when Favors comes back. And yeah it's a joke Neto doesn't get any run. He's not the best pg but he's certainly competent. Exam to the D-League sounds good to me. It'll torpedoe his confidence but that's all a part of the process. If he doesn't improve it might be better just to keep Mack instead
WayOfWad3
11-30-2016, 10:55 PM
As for Favors, I bet he'll be back within the week. Hill was the same, "out indefinitely," yet the same day I read he might spend a whole nother week on the bench he came back and started.
And at this point, I'd almost rather the Jazz extend Hill instead of Favors; too much injury risk with Derrick and Lyles seems to be rounding into form, not to mention Withey's doing a good job. Jeff doesn't space the floor as much as Derrick though
Xiao Yao You
12-01-2016, 12:55 AM
I'd sign Hill before Hayward too from what I've seen. I think now it looks like they are choosing between Favors and Hood. Don't think they keep them all.
The coach doesn't like Withey.

I'd think the dominating in the D-league could help his confidence if anything. Better than sitting on the bench in the NBA. He could learn how to actually run a team. Hopefully he's ready to play later in the year for the Jazz.

I would've let them shoot like they did, but that's probably because that strategy works more in NBA 2K than it should. And Nero should be playing more, he's better than that small sample size we got. Overall that was an incredibly entertaining game however winnable it was. http://www.sltrib.com/sports/4660711-155/jazz-notes-when-starters-get-hurt
The reason? Head coach Quin Snyder doesn't want to disturb his already inconsistent second unit anymore than is he has to.
"There's value to having consistency," Snyder said.
The third-year coach has held true to that philosophy during his time in Utah. Last season, with starting power forward Derrick Favors hurt, Snyder moved Trey Lyles into the starting five to keep Trevor Booker in his spark-plug role off the bench. This year, with Lyles as the second power forward on the depth chart, Snyder has generally started Boris Diaw with Favors out.
yet Johnson started? Why not start Neto than? Ingles? :confusedshrug:

From the moment Quin Snyder was hired as head coach of the Utah Jazz, his intent was to play with the pass, with pace, and with purpose. It was a team mantra, bedrock philosophy ingrained through repetition.
I remember play with the pass initially was supposed to be moving the ball up the court faster with passes than dribbling which I have yet to really see much of.

they're starting to blame the players. I've also spoken to dozens of fans who feel like the players are somehow lesser beings for sitting out with these injuries, when really, they're just frustrated with a continually extending process where the players are announced out on a game-by-game basis.
Don't think it's all on the players. The doctors say if they can play without injuring it further. They don't want them injuring something else while favoring the first injury. They mentioned that could have contributed to Dante's knee injury. He had sprained his ankle before that.

Despite the controversy surrounding DeMarcus Cousins and his enigmatic behavior on the court, there is no denying that he is a definite star in this league.
Sure there is. Rudy helps wins games. Cousins has stats. That's a star? :wtf:
it’s on the offensive end where the Jazz have struggled. Their opponents are grabbing nearly two more offensive rebounds per game in what has been a noticeable struggle.
They are getting back on D instead of pounding the offensive glass this year. Certainly miss Booker and Favors at that end though.

Quotes from the Sacramento Bee...
"1. Flood the paint: Utah center Rudy Gobert is one of the NBA’s best shot blockers, but the Kings still need to attack the paint. That means attacking off the dribble and going to DeMarcus Cousins.
2. Wing advantage: With Utah forward Gordon Hayward dealing with a finger injury, the Kings should have a big advantage at small forward with Rudy Gay. Finding Gay early in the game could lead to a big night for him."

He should have stuck with the bench in the 2nd. The starters gave the cushion right back. Neto looked like his old self. He hasn't in his previous stints. The fact that Snyder doesn't play the guys that are going good is a joke especially when almost all of them have been inconsistent. Same stuff Jerry used to pull. What happened to Diaw? Gobert stopped the virtually unstoppable.
I expected it. Everyone should at this point. I can't imagine any team that would rather have the Dream teamer Cousins on their team over the winner Gobert.
he's getting some really tough rebounds that no other player can get to, due to his ridiculous length.
The one board should be on highlight reels. Would have been over anyone elses reach!
Zach Lowe @ZachLowe_NBA
Biggest thing that jumps out watching Jazz all week in person -- even more than on TV: Rudy Gobert got awesome. Playing with such force.
You just started paying attention. He has improved but he was always awesome! Great to see that the coach and others are finally starting to realize it though. Only took two years!
Gobert's special, everyone. The Jazz are very lucky to have him.
"We haven't practiced in a while, sometimes that contributes to it when you are not as organized and not as sharp. But as much as anything, it was lack of concentration or lack of precision."
Shouldn't be a problem next game than!
That being said, having George Hill, Rodney Hood and Derrick Favors in the lineup definitely would have helped compared to the relatively turnover-prone Dante Exum, Joe Ingles, and Boris Diaw.
sadly Exum will probably still be playing :banghead:
Can Gordon Hayward make the All-Star game?
who cares? It's two months away. He won't be putting up as many points if they are healthy.
Davis, Durant, Griffin, and Leonard are no-doubters, in my opinion.
Unless they are hurt. It's way too early to even talk about it. So much can and probably will happen before than. Why everyone is so obseesed with it is beyond me. They've been calling him and Favors all-stars for years anyway! :facepalm
Gobert (not many points)
Should have nothing to do with it. He's their most valuable player without a doubt. I think Hill is more important than Gordan too from the little we've saw.

the Jazz got back their leader Gordon Hayward
He may be a leader but Hill is the leader.
Everyone knows that Gobert is a perennial defensive player of the year candidate, but Gobert has become one of the most efficient offensive players in the game. Gobert leads the league in field goal percentage, true shooting percentage, and effective field goal percentage. The young center has also become one of the most effective players in the game at getting to the free throw line, as he also leads the league in free throw rate. All of this is on top of Gobert being second in the league in blocks, and fifth in rebounds.
And all we can worry about is rather Hayward will be an all-star or not?
3. Rudy Gay Needs To Be Traded
Hard to imagine he won't be after saying he won't re-sign. Depending on what happens with Favors and Hill and the price the Jazz should consider it just for the stretch run and playoffs. Joe Johnson, cap space, a trade exemtion and cash enough? :confusedshrug:
Cousin’s was terribly inefficient scoring 16 points on 22 shots, and a that was in many ways due to the defense of the Gobert.
and the fact that he is Cousins.
He impacted the game on both ends and is quickly becoming one of the best centers in the game.
Has been for two years. If they hadn't been tanking maybe someone would have realized it sooner?

Raul Neto has canned 40.0 percent of his three-pointers since entering the NBA last year but can't find spin with the Utah Jazz. Dante Exum and (for some reason) Shelvin Mack are in front of him. George Hill's starter minutes are too valuable to trim when he's healthy.
For some reason Exum is ahead of both of them. I could see Mack being traded because he will likely be gone in the off-season. Going to take more than that to get rid of Neto. He is cheap next year and is a good fit rather the coach likes him or not. Hill and Mack could be gone. Tyrone Wallace does look good though! :applause:

The moves Dennis Lindsey pulled off in a summer of player acquisition coups are all working out.
Hill has hardly played. Diaw missed time too. Johnson doesn't fit. Bolomboy isn't ready.
Utah is even figuring out a way to supply developmental projects like Dante Exum and Trey Lyles with plenty of minutes.
And as it has the past 3 years it's costing them on the floor.
Utah hasn't provided much information on their injured players, aside from the daily report required by the NBA. The reason? The Jazz simply don't know when the players will be coming back. Hood, Favors, Burks and George Hill are all currently on the injury list, with no timetable for a return.
But as we've seen there are timetables. Hill should be day to day. Sounds like Favors and Hood now too. Hayward should have been 4-6 weeks. Alec?
The Jazz sit seventh in the West, but are a full three games ahead of the eighth-place Portland Trail Blazers, and 51/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, who are tied for ninth. So some separation is there should the injuries continue to nag and the Jazz hit a rough patch.
That's nothing with 4 months to go.

Not sure there's much of a market for Exum and Burks right now. Exum could still be very good and possibly very affordable next summer. He shows signs of putting it together. He just needs time. He shouldn't be getting that time on a top NBA team right now though. I'd hang on to him for the time being. Burks eventually will have to go I'd think even with a very friendly contract if healthy because Lindsey didn't draft him and ultimately doesn't fit as well as others and they won't be able to afford everyone.
Iso Joe makes the most sense to me. He's not living up to his contract. On a minimum deal he might be worth having around but for 22 million he should be one of the top 6th men in the league and he hasn't been close to that. Very inconsistent Not a good fit. At the moment they don't have to move anyone but if they get healthy and extensions are signed they might have to.

If you and I had five bucks for every time a whistle were blown on account of what a mistaken ref anticipates is going to happen, rather than what actually does, or on a play of insignificance
that's my biggest problem. When they call something they assume happened but didn't actually see it happen or the star calls though Hayward seems to be starting to get those too.
The more officials that get involved, the less individual accountability there will be because the responsibility of making calls will fall to someone else
don't think that's necessarily true. They confer and try to make the right calls. The replays show the refs right more than wrong.
I like the idea of 4 if the guy behind the play can stay out of the way on the court. That would be my only question with it. Where do they put 5 though?

With higher salary caps and a need for quality three-point shooters around the league, some team may be willing to triple or quadruple his salary.
Probably more considering he can play 4 positions, has length, can defend, can pass, high IQ...
Jazz need to keep him over Johnson and maybe Burks if they can.

Yet whether you view the Jazz as No. 1 in the division, No. 6 in the West or No. 8 in the NBA
The division means nothing now
The Jazz were, you know, trying to win in the past.
The players might be but the front office and the coach I still wonder about. He did sit Lyles most of the 2nd half finally but Exum and Lyles playing just because they have potential is a joke especially with the Stars in town now, No excuse for it at all! :rant
so other than adding a notation to the banner in the arena rafters
shouldn't be anything in the rafters for it anymore either. They should play all teams in the west the same amount of games too. Not more against the division.
The math worked in the home team's favor Wednesday, with Dante Exum and Shelvin Mack hounding Westbrook during a 7-for-25 shooting night. Snyder was careful not to give his own guys too much credit for those numbers, but they deserved it.

closer to the all star break as it appeared to me in that previous article not a couple of weeks. Probably be hard to trade him now until the off0season. Hoe Johnson must go!
Dante Exum: DMX - X Gon' Give It To Ya
Rodney Hood: Young Jeezy - My Hood
Gordon Hayward: Eminem - Lose Yourself
Boris Diaw: Carl Orff - O Fortuna (Carmina Burana)
Rudy Gobert: Big Sean - Bounce Back

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/18273165/zach-lowe-utah-jazz-gordon-hayward-rudy-gobert-nba
With Favors eligible for a big-money extension now, six weeks after Gobert got his, the Jazz wish they had double that minutes sample to investigate. They really wish some of those minutes had come in the playoffs, so they would know whether those double-big lineups could squeeze out points against elite defenses primed for them.
If they had cared that much about it they would have had a veteran pg on the team before the trade deadline.
Snyder arrived in Utah with visions of a fast-breaking, Euro-style offense heavy on shooting. He adapted when he realized Utah might be able to build the league's stingiest defense around Gobert and Favors.
He adapted when he realized Rudy was their most important player though I'm not sure he's really appreciated him until very recently.
It requires a fine balance: Work the offense, but not so long that you run up against the shot clock
they were better at that to begin the year than recently. I guess that's Hill
The Favors-Gobert combination can't sniff Gasolian playmaking, and only Favors has shown glimpses of a threatening post game.
Rudy's post game is better than Favors was 2 years ago.
The Jazz have about $13 million in cap room they can use now to give Favors or Hill a raise, and a long-term extension based off that higher salary. They cannot extend both.
Sure they can. Trade Johnson!
Exum is plainly unready to lead a functional offense, and it's unclear when (or if) he won't be.
and yet he contiunes to play :wtf:
The Jazz include incentives in many contracts that allow for bonuses if players stick around in the summer, sources say. Gobert's massive new extension includes some.
interesting. Rudy's work early in the summer has certainly payed off. It's what I expected last season from him.Hayward's contract was written by Charlotte though
He quietly reached out to Kobe Bryant to see if the retired superstar might tutor him on the art of the midrange. He ended up spending a week with Bryant in Newport Beach.
Why is it that we don't get this kind of info from the local media who is around the team all the time? :wtf:
Utah is counting on the combustion effect of mixing enough really good players. Gobert has made his own leap to that level, with Hayward.
He's been at another level waiting for the rest of the team to catch up actually
They have extra first-round picks coming from Golden State (2017) and Oklahoma City (probably 2018)
The OKC is likely a 2nd rounder I believe actually
With paydays for everyone else looming, Burks, making eight figures annually through 2018-19, has always seemed a likely salary-dump candidate. Utah just can't afford to keep everyone. Slough Burks, and Utah is still looking at a $140 million-plus payroll in 2018-19 if it retains Favors, Gobert, Hood, Hayward, and Hill -- not to mention Exum, up for an extension after this season. Even glitzy teams blanch at rocketing $20 million over the luxury tax.
Burks is a bargain if he can stay on the floor so I could see keeping him. Not sure he's the best fit and Lindsey didn't and wouldn't have drafted him so that's the main reason I see him going. Hood or Favors will have to go assuming they keep Hill and Hayward. Ingles makes more sense than Burks and Johnson.
Favors might prefer to wait until his own free agency in 2018.
or next year when it's better for him to extend but worse for the Jazz
If Utah extends anyone this season, the bet here is on Hill. Dennis Lindsay, the team's GM, drafted Hill in San Antonio, and Utah has no ready replacement for him.
sounds like he's giving up too much but with his own injury issues who really knows how it will play out. A healthy Hill is their 2nd most important player from the little I saw so you may have to gamble he will be healthy
I'd expect the Jazz to gauge the trade market for Favors in the summer and lean on stretchier power forwards. (They'd also have to identify a new backup center, since Favors effectively plays that role when healthy. Jeff Withey has been solid in Favors' absence.)
This year would be better to trade Favors as far as return. Withey will probably cost too much. Not that like him. Diaw, Lyles, Bolomboy and whoever they get for Favors would be more likely to step in.
The league and union have discussed giving capped-out teams more financial flexibility in offering extensions, though it's unclear if any such change will end up in the new deal.
Sounds like it has. Ready for someone to write up exactly how this changes the outlook for the Jazz!
the Jazz could turn into a version of the 2003-04 Pistons -- a huge, defense-first team with a bunch of (allegedly) second-tier stars who combined to form something greater.
But will they be lucky enough to face a better team in the finals where egos gives away a title?
"I think we can beat anybody," Gobert said. "Defensively, we can be the best. We are not scared of anyone."
jow can you not love the guy!

[QUOTE]With two-way contracts between the NBA and NBA Development League, teams can control the development of younger players in the D-League without the fear of losing them to other teams. The union gets more jobs for players with each team able to have 16th and 17th roster spots for players shuttling between leagues. For some players, this will make it more financially feasible to pass over more lucrative overseas contracts to stay in the NBA/D-League.

They are making 36.8 percent of their threes, which is seventh in the league. Last season, they made 35.5 percent from beyond the arc.
would be even better if one of their best shooters from last year was playing instead of one of their worst. :facepalm
And without Favors, the Jazz have gone much of the season with three-wing alignments and a point guard on the floor around Gobert.
usually Diaw or Lyles is on the game with Gobert or Withey or Favors. Have yet to play Hayward at the 4 I believe for some reason.

Here's the thing: that's incredibly dangerous for Hayward, who's prone and up in the air with no real way to control how he lands. Here, Hayward gets his hands down to save him from crashing to the ground, but it easily could have been a lot worse.
Hayward wasn't happy. That's when a tough guy like Booker is missed. He would have said something about it!

I really haven't noticed a big difference there. He was a big part of the offense the past two years with his screens.
I'm glad to hear Hill is finally making some sort of progress, he's bound to have a healthy streak soon as the Law of Averages demands it. And yeah I wouldn't consider Alec to be that important anymore. I WANT him to come back and be a huge contributor, but I don't think he'll be that effective or get enough minutes to do so whereas George and Derrick will.

I probably am, I want him to do good but I really just don't have faith in him at this point. Once injury prone it's hard to get out of that cycle, and Alec has now gone 3 straight seasons dealing with major injuries. Even if he plays good when he gets back, how long are we going to have him for?
Dwyane Wade said Alec Burks was the most underrated player in the league, that Burks played like him, which is a bit of the issue because both are reckless drivers which leads to more injuries. If Alec can transform into a spot-up shooter who seldom drives, then he might have a chance. We'll see in February when he actually comes back

The first injury he'd played with since college and the Jazz knew when they drafted him he would have to have surgery on it eventually.
Last years was unfortunate. Instead of an acrobatic lay-up and a short fall to the ground like he usually took he went for a dunk I think because people questioned rather the other shot he'd made in the previous game was a dunk or not and he was trying to prove something.
The latest one didn't actually sound that serious. I think he's out now more because of the broken leg. I know someone said it takes a year to fully heal. He's getting close to that now. The Jazz are being cautious for the long term. So I'm not actually convinced he's injury prone yet despite the way he plays. If he was older it would be more worrisome. He's still young
He was one of their best shooters and playmakers and scorers and from the way he's talked he's going to change his game some because of the injuries but what he excels at is getting to the rim and drawing fouls. Not sure you can ask him to become a totally different player than that.
I thought they would be alright without him and he would eventually be traded because Lindsey didn't and I don't think would have drafted him because he's not known for spotting up or playing D. I though Hood and Johnson could fill the role as bench scorers but right now they could certainly use his 15 a game off the bench and his ability to draw fouls. Mack is their 6th man now and he might not even be playing when Hill gets back!
He's certainly one of my favorite players to watch and I hope he can make it back and have a nice career still rather it's in Utah or not.

Maybe not. He's been putting up 15 a game recently which would put him in Hood, Favors and pre-Jazz Hill territory. I still think Hood off the bench makes sense too which could hurt his average if it ever happens. Rudy needs more shots.

Not really. Was only the 2nd quarter where they got blown out. If anyone other than Gobert shows up like their superstar Hayward perhaps it may have been a ball game.
Dante Exum played poorly at the point guard spot.
What's new? Neto played well. He actually looks like he belongs on the floor unlike Dante. Dante looked good hitting those 3's at the end when their was no pressure. Send him down to the D-league where he can do that and get his game together. Makes too much sense.

Hayward missed all six of his threes.
He's streaky and shouldn't be settling for that. Needs to be more aggressive.
When things aren't going right, the young players, guys like Dante Exum, Trey Lyles, and even Rodney Hood are looking to Hayward for guidance on what to tweak, what to change. They're looking for a statement.
He's not the leader that Hill is simply put.
That's the second time they've tried that this season; last time, it was outscored by nine points in three minutes. It's one of those ideas that sounds good in theory ("Hey, just put your best players on the floor!"), but it is really, really hard to do when there's a quick player in the game for the opposition.
