The Utah Jazz have a few large decisions looming this off-season. First and foremost, the decision to re-sign Power Forward Derrick Favors or not.
The big decisions should be how much to pay for Exum's potential and rather Ricky makes sense long term. Letting Favors go should be an easy one
Derrick Favors and Raul Neto are both unrestricted free agents. Donte Exum is a restricted free agent, and Utah has team options on Thabo Sefolosha, Ekpe Udoh, and Jonas Jerebko.
I believe Neto is restricted. Shouldn't matter. They should let him go
To put those numbers into context, during the regular season the Utah Jazz had an offensive rating of 106.2, which was good for 15th in the NBA. So offensively, the Jazz typically have at least an average offense when Gobert and Favor share the floor.
Average offense won't beat the top teams
An added benefit to having both Favors and Gobert on the roster is that Quin Snyder can essentially split their minutes. They will play the first few minutes of each half together, but after that, they can alternate. Which means that the Jazz can have a full 48-minutes with a defensive presence to protect the rim.
Except he's not a rim protector. Udoh is
[QUOTE]Due to his athleticism, he is also a very capable defender. Especially when switched onto guards. He has terrific lateral movement, and can defend in space. If Utah were to replace Derrick Favors with Aaron Gordon, I don

Fortunately for the Jazz, their comfy cap sheet allows for some realignment. Tyreke Evans shouldn't fetch more than the non-taxpayer's mid-level, which they have at the ready. They can browse glitzier names if they wish, but they shouldn't. They need to renounce Exum (restricted), Derrick Favors and Raul Neto (restricted) while waiving Jonas Jerebko, Thabo Sefolosha and Ekpe Udoh to approach $20 million in space.
Doubt they renounce Exum for him. Might want to keep Jonas too. Maybe he'll play more with Favors gone? Udoh probably has to be kept unless Bradley dominates summer league

Step 1) Find a trade partner for Alec Burks. When Burks is healthy, he can play well and fits in with Quin Snyder's system. But for the past few years, he has been battling injury after injury. This past season, he did play 65 games and posted a 13.1 PER, but in very limited minutes (he averaged 16.5 per game). He just hasn't been the same player he was back in 2014, and, in my opinion, isn't worth the $11.5 million price tag. The Jazz should seek either a late first-round pick or a two second-rounders plus some cash in exchange for the sixth-year man and possibly their first-round pick.
He's fine. The coach doesn't like him. He needs to go elsewhere. He's a bargain at that price if someone lets him play his game. They aren't getting a first for him but they need to free him
Step 2) Re-sign Derrick Favors and Dante Exum. Favors was an instrumental player in the Jazz's playoff run. Even though a frontcourt with him and Rudy Gobert is a bit of a logjam, the two play well with each other (while on the court together, they produced a 7.2 net rating), and the team plays better with him on the court. Though he may be a bit expensive, the Jazz would be able to afford him after clearing out Burks' contract. Exum is also a key player, when healthy, and can serve as an excellent backup to Rubio. Both guys are important cogs to keep in the Jazz's system, and getting them back on the court in the navy-and-gold (or red-and-orange) is vital.
The Jazz need shooting. Neither player helps there
Think Luc Mbah a Moute.
Didn't want him last summer. What has changed?

The thing that springs to mind for me is Derrick Rose. There would have been some things that happened behind closed doors with Derrick's agent but I do wonder whether he would've filled the gap against the Rockets. For the TWolves in round 1 vs the Rockets, he averaged 23.8mins, 14.2pts, 2.6 asts and 1.8rbs. Not mind blowing numbers but with that next to Donovan at this stage, we may have been able to win another game or two at least. Derrick Rose did state that he wasn't opposed to coming to Utah but he never really said he wanted to either. How would he have been with sitting behind Ricky and probably Dante too? Would he have actually fit in? Would we have made it to the Finals this year? There are all kinds of what ifs but if I had to reach, I'd say this was Dennis Lindsey's most significant mistake of the season.
Didn't fit. Can't shoot and Snyder wouldn't have played him because of D. Finals?

Truthfully, general manager Dennis Lindsey could bungle this draft, and several drafts over the next several seasons, but would still be considered one of the league's savviest talent scouts. He drafted Mitchell in the latter end of the lottery and drafted All-Defensive First Team center Rudy Gobert with the 27th overall pick in 2013.

Imagine Mitchell, George and Rudy Gobert as Utah’s core, to go along with guys such as Ricky Rubio, Joe Ingles and Jae Crowder. That’s an incredibly good group, led by Snyder. It would seem that George would find such a situation desirable from the combination of having a starring role while also having the chance to make serious playoff runs.
Rubio might have to go to clear the cap space. Possibly Crowder and others too. Burks would be the first one they'd want to unload plus giving up cap holds and options of others
After those two moves, the Jazz would have about $25 million in cap space, and nearing the luxury tax would seem like something the team would be willing to do if it meant landing a player of George’s caliber.

https://thejnotes.com/2018/06/10/rumor-tobias-harris-interested-joining-utah-jazz/
In a recent podcast, David Locke mentioned a rumor that LA Clippers forward Tobias Harris had expressed interest in joining the Utah Jazz.
If it's true they'll go after him. Can he switch on D? Don't let West rip you off. Rubio's expiring contract?
The following summer following the aftermath of the Gordon Hayward departure, not only have there been rumors that the Jazz missed out on a chance to sign some guys who were indeed interested in coming to Utah, but they also still got recognizable vets Thabo Sefolosha and Jonas Jerebko. While neither of them were star free agents, they were still talented players that were more than happy to come to Utah and have seemed to only thrive and enjoy their time there.
By thrive you mean platoon?
If this rumor is true, it’s one that Jazz fans should be extremely excited about. Although Harris is signed through the end of the 2018-19 season, he would be an absolutely phenomenal pickup for the Jazz. Hypothetically, if he was truly interested in joining the Jazz as Locke said, Utah could aim to make a trade for him this season, but I have a hard time seeing the Clippers dealing the guy that was their main prize in the Blake Griffin trade unless they’re planning to go full rebuild mode.
He's not a player you build around. I think everyone on the Clippers is available. The question is can the Jazz offer more than other teams and would they want him. Seems like a good fit offensively for sure.
And Harris could very well prove to be the missing link for the Jazz. He’s gone somewhat under the radar to casual NBA fans, but he’s an exceptional player. He averaged 18.6 points per game last season between his time with the Clippers and Detroit Pistons, including a career-high 19.3 per game in his 32 contests in LA. During that stretch, he shot over 41 percent from three.
Need more than 1 piece.
Might be able to pull it off at the draft. Clippers could add the Jazz pick to their two lottery picks. Might be able to move up and get the next guy to lead their team in the future.

The Jazz hold the 21st pick in the draft and they need a stretch four, a center off the bench for Rudy Gobert, or/and a player who can create their own shots.
took Bradley last year. Need a 4
After reading several articles, people suggest to trade up in the draft, but take in the massive contract of Nic Batum. Since my future plans can be affected by this move, this does not happen. With the 21st pick in the draft, the Utah Jazz will select Moritz Wagner, a PF out of The University of Michigan. Wagner was instrumental to the Michigan March Madness run, which went to the championship game. Standing at 6'11'', he can stretch the floor, and he has the ability to face up or play off the dribble. This season, he improved to 39.4% from behind the arc and his passing vision has improved.
Switching on d?
Jazz free agents include Giorges Niang, Derrick Favors, Dante Exum, and Raul Neto. Because I drafted Moritz Wagner, I will let Giorges Niang walk. I will make a qualifying offer for Dante Exum and Raul Neto to make them restricted free agents since the Jazz need them for backup PGs. Derrick Favors will be an unrestricted free agent, and he is valued at 10-20 million dollars. Instead of signing Derrick Favors to the roster, we will sign him to a 5yr 95m contract, which will be about 19 million a year. We will include him in a package with Alec Burks, Jonas Jerebko, and Thabo Sefolosha, along with a couple of protected Jazz first round picks, for Paul George in return.
See what Niang looks like in a few weeks in summer league(playing for Jazz)? Neto needs to go to where he can be appreciated. Exum needs to go if they have to overpay him for more than a year. OKC doesn't want Favors.
The Jazz will sign Montezll Harrell to a 2yr 8 million dollar contract with a player option. The addition of Harrell will help with rebounding and post defense off the bench, and it will help the Jazz run small lineups by playing at the 5.
Already have Udoh and Bradley. George didn't want to play the 4 with Indy

But with the focus on the 1st round, I feel like the 2nd round/undrafted guys don't get enough love here. The Jazz, for example, have been praised for their development team and finding the "diamond in the rough" kind of guys. Especially with how much Royce did really well this last season (I admit I had never heard of him and did the "WHO?" when he signed last year. Cold take right there...) With Royce and Joe being the best recent finds of the Jazz and player development being the focus, I'm kinda intrigued by who they could possibly draft with the #52 pick and the undrafted finds in summer league/fall camp:
Jazz 2nd round picks are on another team within a year :wtf:
-Ray Spalding, (PF) Louisville. Has the connection with Donovan from Louisville, so that helps! I think the big knock on him is that he's suuuuuuper lean and would need to bulk up to be a fulltime 4.

Regardless, the fact remains that he was the starting center on the best teams in Jazz history. I’m talking about squads that pushed MJ and the Chicago Bulls to the brink in two NBA Finals. ‘Tag also shows surprisingly well among the league’s all-time leaders in blocked shots (37th in blocks per game, 47th in total blocks).
People expected things out of him that he wasn't going to give you in stead of appreciating what he did do. He was a great shot blocker and offensive rebounder.
Unfortunately, a stress fracture in his foot cost him the entirety of the 1985-86 season. That injury, combined with knee problems and the emergence of Stockton-to-Malone, really took the wind out of his sails as a player.
He was fine physically. Jazz never forgave him for holding out. Played a stiff instead
For several years, one of the great debates in NBA circles was whether he or Chris Paul was the best point guard in the league. Chances are that few outside of the 801 area code gave D-Will the nod, but it was far from an open-and-shut case. He was that good.
It was open and shut except in Utah
‘Big T’ Thurl Bailey was low-key one of the better frontcourt players in the league and a crucial piece to the Jazz for a decade. He probably would have started for most of the league’s other teams throughout the ’80s, but ended up playing second fiddle to arguably the greatest power forward of all-time instead.
Debatable. He made sense off the bench. He was a 6'll small forward. In today's game he'd be a center
At one point, Bailey registered back-to-back seasons of averaging nearly 20 points per game (19.5 and 19.6 ppg in ’87-88 and ’88-89, respectively). And he did so largely as a bench player. In 708 games in a Jazz uniform, he put up 14 points and nearly six rebounds per game.
starter minutes
He could bring home the league’s Defensive Player of the Year trophy this summer, and it would be a major shocker if he doesn’t play in his first All-Star Game next season. It’s downright unbelievable at this point that he once played behind guys like Enes Kanter and Jeremy Evans. I’m no Tyrone Corbin hater, but dude…really?
He didn't deserve to play over them until December 2014. He was a skinny project that couldn't catch the ball.
Big Mark would go on to become one of the most intimidating defensive forces in the history of the league. If he lands with a perennial title contender of the Lakers or Celtics mold, he’s probably a Hall of Famer right now.
He probably would have never been in the league if not for Frank. He was big. He was not good!

Perhaps the biggest need is for the Jazz to find a starting power forward. Be it Derrick Favors or a stretch option on the open market, it would behoove the team to identify a solution this summer. However, the lack of shooting/scoring punch off the bench from a two-guard or wing player also stands out as something GM Dennis Lindsey should look to address.
Needs shooting everywhere.

One could say Dennis Lindsey is much more on his game when the Utah Jazz are without a lottery pick to start with. When Dennis Lindsey has used his lottery picks he has ended up with a mixed bag of Trey Burke, Dante Exum, Trey Lyles, and a one year rental of George Hill. But when Lindsey starts off with a late 1st round pick or 2nd rounder, he has made out like a bandit. He has turned those picks into Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, Rodney Hood, Raul Neto, and Ian Clark. Two of those picks were the results of trades involving the Denver Nuggets.
Wouldn't put Clark with those names. He sucked in Utah. He was undrafted anyway wasn't he? He had a big summer league for someone else

Sure, there have been missteps (Trey Lyles, Trey Burke), but overall, Lindsey's return has far exceeded the value of his picks during his tenure as the Jazz's top basketball executive.
Wouldn't call Lyles a misstep. The biggest problem has been throwing these guys into the line-up and not making them earn anything. Trey might have worked after his rookie year if he hadn't been handed the starting job as a rookie.
I'm very anxious to see Allen's summer league performance. If he struggles against the varied cast of guard opponents who are trying to make it to the NBA, it will be a very bad sign for a prospect of his age. On the other hand, he has a chance to show exactly what made those workouts stand out and that he can continue to be a difference maker at the next level.
I'd agreee that he needs to look good in summer league at his age

“He fits Ricky Rubio; he fits Dante Exum because he can really shoot,” Lindsey said. “He fits Donovan Mitchell because either of them can bring it up, create on the front end of the possessions and also finish on the back end of possessions.”
Another way to go about it would be getting rid of the guys that can't shoot! :confusedshrug:
And yet Allen, barring a suprising surge as a rookie, won’t be the piece that bridges that gap. That could be Derrick Favors, who is testing free agency, but has said he’s open to returning. It also could be Exum, who has shown flashes of his top-5 potential in between a frustrating string of injuries.
You aren't winning championships with the same team plus a rookie! :wtf:
It’s notable that the Jazz didn’t draft any players who could look to replace either of them — even restricted free agent Raul Neto still could have a defined role as Utah’s third point guard. While the Jazz can’t communicate with free agents until July 1, the draft can be read as a vote of confidence that Utah hopes to bring back those pieces.
Neto has to be smarter than that. This guys is basically a bigger better Neto it sounds like to me. Someone that Snyder can love like he will never love Neto. Raul will be loved. It just won't be in Utah.
“The exit interviews went really well, and we have good relationships with all three agencies,” Lindsey said. “I don’t know anything that would get in the way of a deal, but they have to vet their market, we have to vet our market, and then we have to compare some notes and see if there a marriage — three marriages in this case — to be made.”
What should get in the way is improving the team. They need shooting. Favors and Exum aren't shooters. Neto is but he deserves to play. Exum I can see being brought back at the right price and amount of years probably one because he is young and still has potential. Favors will never be the 3 point shooter they need him to be. Neto isn't growing suddenly.
It was also telling that the Jazz, who have brought back three picks each of the past two seasons, sold their second-round pick to the Houston Rockets for cash considerations.
It tells me Lindsey has done a bad job with the 2nd round picks recently and at least got money for a guy that would be on another team within a year. :rant
It’s not a typical move by the Jazz under Lindsey, but Utah’s competition for roster spots could be as competitive as ever: 2017 first-round pick Tony Bradley has spent much of his offseason in Utah to develop his game and prove he can merit a future role with the Jazz. Lindsey also name-dropped Georges Niang, a two-way player who dominated the G-League last year, has spent some of his offseason in Utah, and he hopes to take another leap. Erik McCree and Naz Mitrou-Long also hope to make an impression in Summer League starting on July 2.
Bradley and Udoh fighting it out for the back-up center minutes. If Bradley is great in summer league maybe let Udoh go and get a cheaper vet to full the end of the bench
Niang can play. Not sure if physically he is an NBA player though. He has to get in tip top shape and prove it. McCree isn't as good but might have more upside as a NBA player. Long has the size(not sure on length) and is multi skilled. He has a chance of doing something too. We'll see in Summer League rather any of them(Goss?) should be expected to contribute this upcoming season. Griffin, Exum and Mitchell were the only ones to emerge a year ago and Griffin was let go and Exum still sucks on offense. What are all of these battles? Back-up center if Favors leaves? His minutes at PF? Who backs up Ingles, Mitchell and Rubio besides O'Neale, Crowder(probably Exum) and eventually Allen? Who sits at the end of the bench? Who plays for the Stars? The Jazz need to add some proven guys before you talk about how competitive camp will be
“All those guys and more have been putting in good work,” Lindsey said. “We’re very confident in what’s been happening in the offseason.”
I'm not. Internal improvements doesn't beat GS or Houston. Need to make some moves starting July 1st to give themselves a chance.

He's a combo guard so he can back up both Rubio and Mitchell. I know that's Exum's job, but if a team offers him a max deal I don't think we should match it. I think Allen is already a better offensive player than Exum, and Exum may never develop into a scorer. If we do bring Exum back, he now has some competition for minutes and maybe that lights a fire in him.
Need Exum to develop a shot not be a scorer. Exum won't have competition. He never has. He's played regardless except last season when they were trying to keep Hayward.
Allen isn't a good defender. I don't care what his combine numbers were, he wasn't a good defender in college and he'll need to work hard to become just an average defender in the NBA. I'm ok with that. This isn't football, offense is more important than defense in basketball. Also, he apparently played great when the Jazz brought him in to play against other players. His defense couldn't have been Carmelo Anthony-bad for him to have had a great workout.
Snyder won't play guys that don't defend though...unless they are from Duke.
I think if anyone offers Exum the max the FO should laugh at them and let Exum become their headache.

Grayson is a little older than most of these players. So he should perform well in summer league. He will be playing with a solid summer league roster and will most likely be on the floor with guys that have been in our system for a little while. He should perform well. I will specifically be looking at his FT%, 3P%, PER and NET RTG. Based on his age, I would expect him to perform somewhat similarly to Rodney Hood, who had a good summer league for us as a slightly older player.
He's being put into a great position with 4/5 of the Stars starting line-up. Might be the best Jazz summer league team yet. He has to look good at age 23 or I'd be very worried about his future. Should be centered around Allen and Bradley and maybe Goss. Haven't seen his name mentioned on the roster for whatever reason though. Niang needs to show he's in a lot better shape. He can play. Not sure if he's an NBA player though. McCree has talent too. I'm thinking him or Niang could be battling for a roster spot. Long has a chance of being an NBA player too. Looking for Stars and fall camp spots as well. Found O'Neale on another team last year. With only one pick this year plus maybe Goss and some of last year's Stars they should certainly be on the lookout for guys to fill the end of the roster.

The bench could include Neto / O'Neale / G Allen / Crowder / Isaac Haas with Erik McCree and Kalen Martin as extra fire power. McCree, Martin and Haas will be featured in our summer league but could prove worthy for a roster spot if we have to clear cap room to land Paul George. All 3 of these guys can score. I wish I could get excited about Georges Niang but I probably just don't like the way his name rolls off the tongue. He averaged an impressive 57%FG / 45%3PT and 87%FT this last year in the D League. Unfortunately his game is kind of boring to watch. I wish there was a way we could sign the undrafted Rawle Atkins to replace Exum
Haas certainly doesn't sound like he fits the modern game. They could sign Atkins. And they could let Exum fo. Probably won't. Niang was one of the top 5 guys in the G-league. I wouldn't expect him to get you excited. You hope he can develop into a role player. They aren't supposed to be exciting. The guy can play. Rather he is an NBA played is still to be determined

On a Jazz team that may be one of the best in the Western Conference next season, Favors will never regularly play 35 minutes per game. He won’t finish as many games as he’d like, and he won’t find as many touches in the post he may receive on another team.
Why would he stay for that?
From Utah’s perspective, Favors will never be the steady, knockdown 3-point shooter Quin Snyder craves from the power forward slot — though he is getting better in that area. And at times, the spacing can be clunky when Favors and Rudy Gobert share the floor.
Why would they want him back?
Favors knows his fate on the market could be tied to Los Angeles Clippers’ big man DeAndre Jordan, who may opt out of the final season of his deal and become a free agent. Teams needing a big man will likely turn to Jordan first before speaking with Favors.
A new team that makes sense for him is Washington. They have no center.Maybe a sign and trade and they get Beal or Rivers?

But more realistically, I do think they’ll look at some of the available shooting bigs, especially if Favors leaves. The guard and wing spots are getting a little crowded, but I’d expect them to gauge interest with the likes of Parker, Young (if he opts out), Nemanja Bjelica, Anthony Tolliver, Rudy Gay… If a star player is willing to sit down and listen to their pitch, Utah will happily set up the meeting, but don’t get your hopes too high on the PG-13 class of free agents. Also, don’t overlook the possibility of adding a rotational big via trade.
They have to look at bigs regardless. I like Nemanja but I think they need a new starter so Illasoya would be a better fit. Maybe someone else is available in a trade though? Tolliver is more of an end of bench guy.
Before the draft, I commented a few times that Hez could be a worthy gamble for somebody, including possibly the Jazz. We finally got a glimpse of what the former top-five pick can do with the leash off. But he’d be a flier/project on the wing, and the Jazz just drafted another wing project. Even with Exum in free agent status, the Jazz have Mitchell, Joe Ingles, Allen, Royce O’Neale, Burks, Jae Crowder and Thabo Sefolosha who play some wing minutes. So at this point, I think Hez would have to come really cheap and be OK with a deep bench role.
Thabo is gone. Burks should be gone and won't play if he's not. Allen should be considered a Star until he proves otherwise. Crowder is the back-up 4 as well. Ingles can play the 4. Mitchell the one. There is certainly room for at least two other rotation level players at the 1, 2, 3 and 4 besides the starting 4 they need. I'd look for 3 because I wouldn't count on Exum or Allen until the prove their worth.
Sure, there are guys out there who are better and could be had in the exceptions range. There are going to be some really good free agents signing at the MLE, taxpayer MLE and BAE this year, but who knows if the Jazz can get to them. For example, Trevor Ariza is slightly better in the Thabo mold, and Bjelica offers more macro value as a shooting bench big than Jerebko. But there’s no guarantee the Jazz can get those guys, and they might just decide that there’s value in keeping guys that already know the culture. They’re also all on cap-friendly contracts that preserve the Jazz’s 2019 flexibility. So I think the most likely outcome is that the Jazz keep at least one and possibly all three of those guys unless they find themselves in a position where they need to clear room because an impact player is interested.
The coach isn't a big fan of Jonas or Thabo so why not get someone else that he might like better? What would they have to lose? Another platoon between two of their best players? I see Udoh as most likely to be back to battle with Bradley for the back-up 5 minutes.
I have actually gotten the sense that they want Sefolosha back. They value his skills and leadership, and if you replace him, you’re probably doing so with a guy you have to sign beyond this year, cutting into 2019 cap flexibility. I would venture that Sefolosha is the most likely of those three guys to remain a Jazz player.
pot smoker. Could move his date back possibly too
Is there any cap incentive to move Alec Burks if all our free agents re-sign and we go into next season with the current roster?
What incentive is there not to try and move a guy the coach doesn't want and is too good to be sitting on the bench?

In the games Exum played upon his return, especially in the playoffs against Oklahoma City and Houston, the Jazz front office and fans saw what Exum could be and what he currently needs to work on. The most elite trait he has going for him is his lightning-quick first step. If a bigger defender ever switched on him, Exum took advantage. He also looked better at finishing at the rim, averaging 67 percent within two feet of the hoop.
He sucked against OKC! His huge step gets him what? Missed lay-up opportunities.

https://www.ksl.com/article/46351833/jazz-would-have-to-sacrifice-to-open-up-cap-space-for-nba-free-agency
To stay over the cap or drop everything to go under it?
In order to open up enough room to have a maximum salary slot for a player like Paul George under the NBA's cap, the Jazz would have to do the following:
Waive Thabo Sefolosha, Ekpe Udoh, and Jonas Jerebko.
Renounce the rights to re-sign Derrick Favors, Dante Exum, and Raul Neto.
Incentivize another team that is under the cap to take on Alec Burks' contract for nothing in return. This would likely cost the Jazz a first-round pick.
No mention of Rubio. Be easy to watch him go if George is coming even Ingles really. They have no max players. They could get one easy! He just has to say yes
So if Paul George were to choose Utah, it is possible to make happen. But from a Jazz perspective, is a trade of Sefolosha, Udoh, Jerebko, Favors, Exum, Neto, Burks and a first-round pick worth it for George? Probably not, unless George signs a long-term deal.
It's worth it regardless. That's how titles are won. Not bringing back the same team that isn't good enough. The player their that Quin loves is Exum and he sucks! :wtf:
The next tier of free agents below the max guys is all restricted, meaning that their current NBA team can match whatever contract they're offered. In order for the Jazz to get Aaron Gordon, Jabari Parker or Julius Randle, they probably have to offer at least $15 million to convince their current teams not to match the contract. And to open up that cap space, they'd have to waive Sefolosha, Udoh, and Jerebko and renounce the rights to Favors and Exum. It's very hard to argue doing all of that is worth it for those free agents.
You take the best player every time in the NBA.
Given the risk involved, I expect the Jazz to stay over the cap for the summer. That would allow them to keep all of the players currently on the roster mentioned above, and add middle-tier free agents through two different mechanisms:
Why are they worried about keeping guys Quin doesn't even like? Get rid of those guys. Along with the exceptions they should be able to upgrade
If the Jazz keep Sefolosha, the over-the-cap plan is probably the way they're going. If they waive him, they probably have some surprisingly big plans this summer.
If they keep him they are changing their ways. A pot smoker on the team?!
Derrick Favors is the Jazz's most important free agent because of his versatility. He can play both the power forward spot next to Rudy Gobert or play the role of the league's best backup center behind him. It's easy to imagine a better conceptual fit for the first role, but losing Favors probably means signing two players to replace what he brings. That may not be feasible with the Jazz's salary exceptions named above.
Or one guy that fits. :confusedshrug:

https://thejnotes.com/2018/06/29/argument-trio-key-utah-jazz-free-agents/
To be frank, there’s not a whole lot of reason to be opposed to bringing Raul Neto back. He hasn’t had an immense impact in Utah by any means, but he’s been ready when called upon and has been a serviceable backup.
The coach isn't a fan and he's never been appreciated in Utah since he first schooled Trey Burke in his first ever Jazz summer league game with no practice! Why bring him back? Can get someone even cheaper that the coach might like. They just basically replaced him with Allen who may not be cheaper or better but he is a bit longer and bigger and what else matters?
However, the fact that he isn’t an enormous contributor to Utah’s success may very well be the strongest argument behind looking to move on from him. The Jazz seem to have a lot of backcourt depth especially after drafting another guard in Grayson Allen. As such, it’s logical to think that rather than keep Neto around, Utah may want to use his roster spot to add depth on the wings or in the frontcourt.
Neto and Exum could both be gone and Exum sucks. Rubio sucks and will hopefully be gone within the next year or so. Burks will be gone within a year and isn't liked anyway. Stockton? Could envision a future backcourt of Mitchell with O'Neale(probably more of a 3 though) and Allen. Goss may find a spot somewhere. Ingles and Crowder could play there but Crowder is probably more of a 3/4 and as Joe gets older 3 and maybe even 4 could make more and more sense for him. There is no one after that. Not really that deep actually.
That becomes even more true if some team is willing to throw a considerable offer Neto’s way. He’s been good for the Jazz, but partly he’s been nice to have around because he only cost Utah $1.4 million this past season. Especially if Utah does end up retaining both Favors and Exum, they’ll be more limited on cap space than one might think, which means Neto would likely be among the first to go if the Jazz didn’t feel it necessary to make space for him.
Someone out there will want what he brings. The fact that they want to pay and play Exum, who has mostly sucked, over Neto who balls, just because he is long and athletic tells you all you need to know really.
Not only that, but he shot over 40 percent from 3-point land last season, a trait that Utah severely needs, and he’s a scrappy defender that causes opponents more trouble than one would think considering his relatively small stature. Especially for a third-string point guard, Neto is everything the Jazz could want.
He's everything you should want in a back-up really. Was a solid starter as a rookie too. But who cares about shooting!
The cases for calling the Dante Exum experiment quits and letting the young Australian guard walk are pretty cut and dry. First of all, he’s missed nearly two full seasons in just four years in the league. Some would call that injury-prone, others would argue that he’s just fallen on bad luck. I tend to lean more towards the latter, but no matter how you look at it, his career thus far has been a disappointment due to injuries.
It's been a disappointment because he's sucked!
He’s also shown a lot of red flags in regards to ever panning out or reaching the sky-high potential he presumably had as the former No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. His efficiency is worrisome and his ball-handling and decision making are downright scary at times. He’s never averaged above double-figure scoring and has shot under 30 percent from deep in the past two seasons. Those are certainly concerning signs.
What's concerning is the talk of him getting paid all of this money to suck!
On the flip side of the worst case scenario where Dante could land a big offer from an opposing squad, imagine if teams are hesitant to offer him so the Jazz are able to keep him on a comfortable contract, then he blossoms into the star he was projected to be. All of a sudden, Utah would have a prolific player at a bargain rate. Yes, re-signing him at any amount will be risky, but it could very well come with a very high reward.
We're still going to dream of him being a star? Look at someone like Oladipo in comparison. He emerged unexpectedly a star this year. But he was a very good ball player from the time he stepped in the league. Exum has yet to show anything besides D in the NBA. If he can hit open shots and be a 3 and D player I'd be happy at this stage. Star I can't envision
The most significant case for Exum is that he still has ample room to improve, and if he does so, he could yet become a great player. The Jazz seem to like their chances of that happening. If Exum is able to put in work this summer and remain healthy, don’t be surprised to see him in the conversation for the Most Improved Player award next season.
I'd be shocked! :lol
As a full-time starting center, I’d say he most assuredly does. However, since Rudy Gobert owns that role for the Jazz, Favors instead finds himself in more of an over-sized starting four and backup center role. He’s done well in that position, but one can’t help but wonder if perhaps the Jazz would be better off adding more of a playmaking stretch-four to take his spot.
Still not an ideal fit because he's not a rim protector or shooter.
Argument for Derrick Favors
I see none for the Jazz to sign him or for him to stay. Time to say thanks and good-bye
First of all, one of the reasons why the Jazz were so successful this past year was because they had a chemistry that was second-to-none. I am certain that Derrick Favors played a huge role in that. His connection on and off the court with Donovan Mitchell was apparent, and he and Ricky Rubio formed an excellent pick-and-roll pair.
Actually it was Ingles and Favors on the pick and roll. Ricky sucks at it.
Not only that, but Favors took massive strides in his floor stretching abilities this past season and knowing his work ethic, I believe he can improve even further this next year. Despite the common notion, he and Gobert actually performed quite well when on the floor together, and now that they’re accustomed to playing with one another and Ricky Rubio, the Jazz should be able to get off to a much better start next season.
I'd hardly say he made massive strides with his shooting. He took more. Was pretty awful though. Can't see him ever being a great option in the corner
Also, Favors is an exceptional defender who allows the Jazz to keep a solid rim protector on the floor at all times. He showed the ability to check perimeter players when he defended Carmelo Anthony in the first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he can bang in the post with the best of them, too. He also provides a more versatile offensive weapon for the Jazz than Rudy Gobert when the situation requires it.
Not a rim protector!!!!!! :wtf:
No Niang? I'd guess he's higher on the Jazz list than Neto. :rant

The Jazz, it is widely understood, are looking to lock up the players they had last season, including Derrick Favors, Dante Exum, Raul Neto and Georges Niang. It’s not a strategy that appeals to the imagination that so often accompanies free agency — then again, that has never really been Dennis Lindsey’s style.
“The exit interviews went really well, and we have good relationships with all three agencies,” Lindsey said last week. “I don’t know anything that would get in the way of a deal.”
Gobert and Mitchell will leave eventually :rant
There are a lot of questions that remain for next summer, such as if the Jazz want to bring back Rubio, who has blended well into the team. If Favors and Exum get signed to long-term deals this summer, that tightens salary cap space, but also limit the role of free agents. There is some risk to those choices as well: Was the 29-6 run to end the season a bit of a fluke, or something which the franchise can build a long-term vision around? The Jazz won’t know the answer to that question without giving the core of the 2017-18 team another shot to prove it again.
Obvious to me that they need shooting. Favors and Exum aren't helping that. Exum may have a future with the team but Favors needs to go!

That being said, some of the teams that finished around Utah in the standings last season have already had roster changes early in free agency that will likely alter their outlooks for next season, for better or worse. Already, NBA TV analyst and former player Steve Smith predicted Sunday night that the Jazz and Pelicans could be on the outside looking in at the playoffs next year.
Might be a good thing. Maybe they'll learn that you can't stand pat while everyone else is loading up. Didn't learn it during the Stock/Malone years so I doubt they ever will. Might get a new coach and GM out of it though? :rant
Losing Cousins would certainly be a huge hit for New Orleans moving forward.
They'll be better without him especially if he's making the Lakers or someone else worse!
Obviously, much of their fate rests on what happens with Leonard, who has reportedly asked to be traded, with the Lakers being his preferred destination. San Antonio would certainly enter a rebuilding phase to a significant degree if it trades Leonard.

The Utah Jazz and Derrick Favors met for three hours in Atlanta yesterday. It really does appear that Utah wants Favors back.
Yeah but for all we know they told him we want you as Rudy's back-up for a small amount of money. They will say they tried. Hard for imagine Favors not leaving unless no one else offers him a a better role
Signing Derrick Favors this year to a one year deal might just be the best option available for the Utah Jazz. He gives the Jazz flexibility to rest Rudy Gobert significant minutes throughout the season while Rudy Gobert does the same for Derrick Favors. The Utah Jazz are able to have 48 minutes of solid defense in the middle over the course of a game.
Udoh is a better defender though

Bradley's impact was most felt on the defensive end, where he picked up four blocks. He was a legitimate problem in the paint for the Spurs, and bothered even more than the shots he blocked. The Spurs shot just 18-38 in the paint.

https://www.ksl.com/article/46354549/the-triple-team-jazz-starters-almost-complete-26-point-comeback-against-memphis
Jazz first-round pick Grayson Allen sat this game out, partially due to rest, partially due to a strained adductor that was still nagging him a little that he had suffered in the pre-draft process. That left the Jazz to start a lineup of Naz Mitrou-Long, Georges Niang, Tony Bradley, Kendrick Ray, and Malcolm Hill.
Injuries already!
You've probably heard of three of those players (Bradley, Mitrou-Long, and Niang), those three that have been on the Jazz's roster. Those three were far and away the Jazz's best players on Tuesday night, and it showed in the stats and with the eye test.
Why aren't McCree and Stone playing? Are Bradley and Niang only going to play in Utah and those guys in Vegas?
Those three combined to shoot 23-37 from the field, or 62 percent. The rest of their teammates went 11-34, or 32 percent. Bradley ended up with a +16 plus-minus, and Mitrou-Long and Niang were +12. Their bench teammates were all at least -15 (except for Thomas Wilder, who played with the starters as they went on their second-half run).
Which is why +/= kind of sucks.
Especially in the second quarter, the bench couldn't get a defensive stop, eventually allowing a 26-point Memphis lead in the first half. But to their immense credit, the Jazz made a comeback in the second half, eventually gaining a 1-point lead before the Grizzlies made some tough shots to win it in the final two minutes.
The Stars did that all year long! :lol
You can see that most of his baskets are just about staying in space, rolling at the right times, and sealing his man. While that post move against Jackson early in the game was impressive, the truth is that Bradley is not going to be getting the ball in the post like that often. Instead, it's about getting open, catching the ball on the move, and finishing. Bradley did that well.
And it should be getting the ball in spots he can shoot which is pretty much everywhere because of his length. The guy can shoot! He's making the Favors signing look worse by the day with his play in the summer. Hopefully force a trade by the deadline!
Bradley's coaches will show him that game film, and he'll improve. I think he's a good on-ball rim protector. But Bradley doesn't show the innate help-side rim protection tendencies of the NBA's best centers.
Just need him to be one of the best back-up centers... next year aparently!
Mitrou-Long had 19 points to lead the Jazz, adding eight assists, six rebounds, and two steals. He did a fantastic job of reading the defense and making the right play, especially late. I also liked how Mitrou-Long attacked the rim and finished, even with some taller defenders around. Mitrou-Long only missed one of his six 2-point attempts. That he played point guard frequently for the Salt Lake City Stars may not have been ideal for that franchise, but it's clearly showing in his skill development.
They're getting some good performances in Summer League as they run out of roster spots signing guys that the coach doesn't even like and guys that can't shoot :rant
With Niang, there's no doubt about it: He has NBA-player skills. He's a terrific shooter, frequently winning shooting contests in Jazz practices. But Niang is also very good at making the right play, finding creative passes that other big men wouldn't dream of. He's versatile, too, able to play both forward positions. Niang's rebounding has improved, and is at the level of most perimeter-oriented big men.
Everyone keep s calling him a wing. I'd say he's a 4 in the NBA if he wants to make it and even than not sure he has it defensively?
It's worth noting, though, that Diaw fell out of the league after his last season in Utah due to his defensive concerns. Despite this comparison to late-career Diaw, Niang has a real NBA chance. I've been told he's the most likely of the two-way players that the Jazz have rotated in and out of to actually make the roster for the long term, and the Jazz have the ability to match any contract Niang is given as a restricted free agent.
That became obvious when they replaced Long with him and made him a restricted FA while letting McCree go

Clark: It’s uncreative, but the Jazz are sort of just molding into the best possible version of themselves right now. I would trade for Love if it only cost the Jazz a first round pick and salary cap filler, but I’m not sure the Cavs are shopping him right now. My dream scenario would probably be for the Jazz to replace Jerebko with Bjelica at a good price, bring Udoh back, stay healthy and see what they have.
We know what they have. That's the problem with all of this. This team can't beat the top teams.
David: The catch phrase this offseason has been internal improvement, but fittingly so. There are so many key players who clearly have the ability to take their games up a notch. Mitchell is the obvious one. His stellar playoff performance just built upon his rookie campaign. Exum and Royce O’Neale also can be vital, should they develop consistency from long-distance. Both seem able to make jumps. What if Joe Ingles and Rubio are able to regularly put up their second-half numbers for the entire 2018-19 season? Another year of acclimation can only help Rubio and Crowder. While Utah’s mindset is not flashy, especially given the happenings this week in the West, for this squad, it makes perfect sense.
This deal probably means less minutes for O'Neale who I would certainly take over Exum without even thinking about it! But than I'd take Neto and Burks over him too. I like basketball players not hype though
Riley: In 2016, nearly half of all NBA teams doomed their 3-5 year future by overpaying players who don’t earn wins, and the Jazz (for the most part) stayed out of this arms race, signing Joe Johnson and trading for George Hill and Boris Diaw. Since then, they have remained flexible and level-headed, and as a result they are arguably a top 5 team in the league while their peers (Washington, Portland, Miami) have lost a step by losing their flexibility. What I’m saying is that keeping a core together while playing your pieces the right way is the right move. Every off-season, plenty of mistakes are made, and Lindsey has a terrific track record of not making those same mistakes, and staying true to that path, barring a surefire All-Star potentially being added to the mix, is the way to go.
Not paying cost them Hayward though! Lindsey has plenty of mistakes. Burks? Exum? Burke? Lyles? Favors? Hood? Rubio? Hill?
Thatcher: The Jazz weren’t supposed to be this good this fast. Mitchell and O’Neale have lots of room to grow. Rubio and Crowder can continue to mesh with this team. The Jazz (and a lot of teams) will have plenty of cap space next season. If this team continues to get better, and Mitchell’s star power increases, they’ll be a prime spot for a top free agent. They are exceeding expectations, but they still have a lot of room to grow.
They should have learned with Stockton/Malone that the window eventually closes. You don't waste a year waiting around.
Ken: Everything goes out the window if a clear upgrade were to become available, but in general, this team played so well together down the stretch, that change for the sake of change would be the wrong move. Not only did they play well on the court, but the locker room seemed seemed on the verge of taking Disneyland’s crown as the happiest place of earth. When things are going smoothly on the court and off, I think you stay the course a little longer, while still preparing for the future. It’s the right approach, again, barring a huge, no-brainer type of opportunity.
If the playoffs is all that matters than sure!
Steve: The Jazz haven’t pole vaulted into that top tier in the west (GSW and Houston), but they are progressing in the right direction. With a healthy DPOY, a full season of Crowder, plus internal development with DM and O’Neale, the Jazz are in a great position to just simply run it back, snag 50-plus wins, and be a top 4 Western Conference team. On top of that, the front office has maintained great position once next summer’s crop of free agents hit. Golden State isn’t going away anytime soon, but the Jazz can contend in the meantime and make the regular season fun.
The problem with waiting until next season is that many other teams will have money to spend to
Clark: I like it. I want to know if this team is really the 55-60 win paced team they played like to close out the season. I think there is an advantage to teams with continuity at the beginning of a season and if the Jazz can get off to a hot start, I don’t see why they can’t finish with the 3rd or 4th best record in the West. No offseason move was putting them up with the Warriors. I think they will put out a very good team this season AND be in a position to add key free agents or make some trades next summer. We will really find out what kind of cache the organization has in the league in the next 12 months. In the mean time, we have a lot to root for.
You can't take the stance that the Warriors are nbeatable. Houston was a Paul injury away from beating them. If Curry was hurt a couple weeks later than he was they could have been ripe for the picking. You put the best team on the floor. You don't know what will happen after that. Who cares if they start hot. It's how you finish. They got beat in 5 games last I saw in the semi-finals. Time to upgrade! :wtf:

The Jazz now have 13 players locked-in for next season, assuming they guarantee Royce O’Neale.
They have until July 9 to make decisions on keeping Jonas Jerebko and Ekpe Udoh. Utah’s mid-level and bi-annual exceptions are still in play. If the team were relinquish both players, there would be around $10 million under the luxury tax threshhold with which to use them.
Udoh is likely to be retained, which takes a chunk out of that. Jerebko’s case for a roster spot is less clear.
2 roster spaces and two guys out there plus Niang is a two way restricted FA. Need to trade Burks somehow(Rubio too :rant ). Need to let Jonas go. Coach wouldn't miss him. With Bradley's play and the signing of Favors let Udoh go. That's 3 spots depending on what you take back for Burks. Niang gets one and I'd look for a 3rd center(maybe 4/5) to be at the end of the bench while Bradley plays with the Stars again. If Rudy or Favors go down for an extended period than Bradley comes up to the rotation. Leave the last spot open to competition in camp and at least one of the two way slots as well. It was made very clear through this deal that the Jazz are all in an Dante Exum. Some consider this an overpay, but the Jazz do not. They believe Exum has potential that he has not yet tapped into after years of constant injury in such a young career. Exum has shown flashes of brillance. At his ceiling, he is surely worth a $11 Million/year. His burst and speed allow him to get to the rim with ease. His defensive ability and length have helped him lock down some of the best scorers in the NBA. If Exum can keep trending up, this deal is awesome.
If he is still an offensive liability at his ceiling than it's an overpay of about 9 million a year. Not tradable!
The other thing that was made clear by this move to keep Exum around is the fact that Dennis Lindsey and the Jazz believe this team with its current players can keep winning.
Not sure it's clear how much winning though. Playoffs yay!!! :wtf:

Meanwhile, guys like Georges Niang and Naz Mitrou-Long continue to impress in Summer League, thus they could very well make a case for earning a spot, though it would seem that unless they prove themselves immensely, they may remain solely on two-way contracts barring some other change with the Jazz roster.
I can't see Niang back on another two way. He was first team all G-league. Full NBA contract or he should go overseas. Nothing more to prove at the G-league level. Makes sense for him to take Jonas' spot.

That contribution caught the eye of Jazz executives, and they invited Kidd to their free-agent minicamp in June. He stood out there with his defensive effort, and so the Jazz invited him to summer league. Now, Kidd has caught the eye of an NBA team, despite scoring just six points per game in his league.
That's why you leave your roster flexible and don't bring everyone back. 2-way? Stars?

Thabo? Open up a roster space? Kings could still look for a 1st for what would be left of their cap space.

If Kidd continues to perform like he has throughout the rest of summer league play, he will almost certainly find himself on an NBA roster. At least through a two-way contract.
Only so many spots. Many players going for those slots
The Utah Jazz will now turn their attention to Las Vegas, as they will be taking on Zach Collins and the Portland Trail Blazers this Saturday.
Food match-up for Bradley/Niang. Or maybe McCree will play? Diamond finally played

"This, by far, is the most conclusive thing I've seen regarding Neto's contribution to team defense. Across all three seasons, and every cut, the defense is significantly better when Raul is on the court," the report says. "While this does not control for opponents, it seems fairly stable given that this trend continues across all seasons and with/without Gobert on the floor."
imagine that. Lack of length and great speed and he can play!

He was the Stars back-up pg last year. Not sure he's an NBAer. His build reminds me of Felton. He's very athletic though.

It's not clear how the Jazz plan to fill the last remaining roster spot. They still have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which allows the Jazz to spend about $8.5 to $9 million per season on a player, if they'd like to spend it on a free agent from another team. Forward Georges Niang, a two-way player for the Jazz last season and a fixture in the locker room, could be a candidate for the 15th-man role.
Niang would be my guess
