Utah Jazz big man Ekpe Udoh will remain in Salt Lake City this season. Udoh met with members of the Jazz front office on Sunday and was informed that his $3.4 million contract will be guaranteed for the upcoming season, according to a Deseret News source. The organization had until Monday, July 9, to decide on whether or not to guarantee his deal.

After the waiver of Jonas Jerebko, Niang is a real candidate for the Jazz's 15th roster spot. In the G League and summer league levels, Niang can do everything you ask of him, and it's no coincidence that the Stars' season turned around when he joined the roster. But in the NBA, Niang will have to make adjustments.
I think it's already been decided. Been pointing that way since they gave him a qualifying offer. The Stars started getting better before he joined. It was changing half the roster that did it
But just a minute later, Bradley injured his wrist battling with Robinson on the defensive end. At first, Bradley just had it taped and was reinserted into the game, but he still kept playing with the injury, opening and closing his hand in some discomfort. He quickly left the game for good. Bradley wasn't available to the media afterward.
Here we go again!
But so often, he does exactly the wrong thing. He forces bad shots and avoids any kind of passing. He'll get beaten for rebounds that he should probably get. And on defense, he'll miss rotations, or jump and commit silly fouls. It honestly drives me crazy. He's an example of a player who is promising in theory but probably hurts your team in the end.
Would be a senior in college. Has potential. That's why he's on the Stars and in Summer League

Based on his body of work last season and in Summer League thus far, Utah Jazz standout Georges Niang undoubtedly deserves an NBA roster spot.
How about deserves a shot? Until he shows he can play against NBA players in the regular season than no he doesn't deserve a spot. He will probably be getting one though on at least a temporary basis

See what happens this year. They could have a much different team after the trade deadline(I doubt it!). But they could be in a good position to do something with the expiring pieces they have. Everyone is looking to next summer.

Erik McCree (personal) will miss Tuesday's Summer League game against the Grizzlies.
Advice: Considering this is just a personal issue, McCree should be able to get back out there for Thursday's game against the Hawks. He's on a two-way deal, so he'll be spending a majority of the 2018-19 season in the G-League.
He hasn't played any games. Might be done in Utah.

Can do both. Jazz have always done so. You aren't beating the best team(s?) with the same squad. Minimum they need shooters to spread the floor. The 4 position made the most sense to get that(besides the 1 but that's another story). Some of it can come internally but Favors will never be someone to count on in the corner.

When Gordon Hayward was in a Jazz uniform, the team relied on internal development of a young unit to become a playoff team. The Jazz chose to rely on the development of Favors and Enes Kanter over spending money chasing bigger-named free agents.
Let their best player go so Favors and Kanter could play! :wtf:
In a league where momentum and health are so often intertwined, and are unavoidable risks, the Jazz willingness to gamble on their existing roster without adding external talent may not be a surefire bet.

For all these reasons, I would implore the Jazz to give him a better bite at the apple. As a rookie, Bradley appeared in just nine games for the Jazz, spending the brunt of his year in the G-League. In year two, that needs to change. Even as the team keeps quality veteran players ahead of him.

The Utah Jazz have had a pretty conservative offseason thus far, but that is by no means a bad thing considering how successful the team was last year.
They got smoked by Houston. It's a joke to come back with the same team!
That may be a disappointment to some who enjoy the theatrics and drama of offseason shuffling. But for those who enjoyed what the Jazz accomplished in the latter half of the season last year, it should be an exciting fact. A Jazz team that appeared to be one of the most daunting in the league to close out last season has received the chance to run it back and give it another shot in 2018-19.
It's disappointing to those that want to see the Jazz go all in for the first time ever instead of treading water. You don't win titles with a team that's not better than others(usually)
[QUOTE]The draft is such a crap-shoot, particularly in the late first round, so time will tell whether or not he was the right selection for the Jazz. On paper, though, he makes a lot of sense. The Warriors, the reigning two-time NBA champions, theoretically got even better this week by signing center DeMarcus Cousins, an All-Star the last four consecutive seasons. Cousins joins a dominant team that already features perennially All-Stars Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
I can see them getting worse with Cousins. They were able to risk it because even if they cut him they are the team to beat especially with Houston seemingly taking a step back and the Jazz not upgrading
The prohibitive favorite even before signing Cousins, the Warriors now are practically guaranteed to win a third consecutive title. Pretty much the only mystery is which day to hold the parade.
There's no guarantee. What if Curry had been hurt a couple weeks later this year? Houston had them beat before Paul went down. Lots can happen. You have to put your team in the best position no matter the odds. I thought the Jazz matched up better with GS than they did Houston and Cousins will leave the court distraught against Gobert as he always does. Too bad they don't have any shooting to keep up at the other end
Teams like the Utah Jazz, who are trying to build a championship mostly through the traditional route of drafting and then developing talent, do not have a realistic chance of advancing all the way through the playoffs. The fact is, the ceiling for nearly all teams in the league is second place.
They aren't trying to win a title. You don't bring back a team you know can't win if you are.

The Jazz signed Jairus Lyles to an Exhibit 10 contract before the game. Basically, what that means is that Lyles will get a shot in training camp with the Jazz, albeit likely on a full roster. The overwhelming likelihood is that he's waived, and then the Salt Lake City Stars would have his G-League rights.

While there may be many out there who feel the Jazz have made a mistake in not shaking things up, there are many positives to the Jazz simply bringing back the band and seeing how things play out next season.
Many positives but none of them include trying to win as much as possible
Short of LeBron James, there was not really anyone the Jazz could have brought in to make them a legitimate threat to the Golden State Warriors, and based on the second half of last season, there is no reason to believe that the Jazz are not already the number three team in the Western Conference. That said, why not just run it all back, and see what you have here?
There was a big difference between 1/2 and 3 is why. They needed shooting. I guess Niang and Long are the shooters they needed!
The reason we should all be optimistic about the Utah Jazz simply running this all back next season, is because when they clicked in, they were one of the most dominant teams in the entire NBA. I may be a homer, but there is an argument to be made that if the Jazz are in the Eastern Conference last season, they make it to the NBA Finals
Who cares?

Okay, that’s not fair to say, but to the casual NBA fan Utah’s plan of attack of building on one of their most successful surprise seasons in recent memory it would seem Utah didn’t do anything. They re-signed all of their free agents: Derrick Favors, Dante Exum, and Raul Neto. They guaranteed the contracts of all their players, minus Jonas Jerebko, on second year team options: Thabo Sefolosha and Ekpe Udoh. The Utah Jazz even brought back both their two way players from last year: Georges Niang and Naz Mitrou-Long. The signed Niang to a long term deal and re-signed Mitrou-Long as a two way player. To the outside casual fan, looking at Utah’s roster from last year to present, it would seem Utah has done nothing, the status quo, but that is not true. Utah has done something that they haven’t done in 10 years: keep a 90% or higher roster continuity from year to year.
For good reason. They got smoked by Huston. The same guys will get smoked again. They need shooting! Long was only with the Jazz briefly. Believe Niang actually took his buddy's spot with the Jazz. Long was with the Stars all year though
That might not seem like a big deal, but when looking back at the only seasons in Utah history where Utah had 90% continuity or higher, the results were interesting. Keep in mind that when a team keeps a roster together that is usually an indictment on the caliber of team that they have.
It also shows that the team has never been all in. When the guys you have aren't getting it done you make some changes
The chart shows 2 seasons they had more losses bringing most of the team back. 2 seasons they did better. This year you'd think they'd do better in the regular season though the west is even tougher but they still will get beat in the playoffs with a team that can't spread the floor
Next year’s Utah Jazz team will have a 92% roster continuity. It will also be the first season since 2010 that the Utah Jazz have had the same starting point guard in two consecutive seasons. That isn’t a typo. Starting point guards since Deron Williams left:
Too bad it's Rubio. Maybe I got spoiled with Green, Stockton and Deron?:rant
Now Trey Burke did start the following season after his rookie year, but many will remember that Dante Exum took over the reigns midway through the year. Then that following summer Exum was hurt, and Raul Neto took over starting point guard responsibilities until the Jazz made a trade for Shelvin Mack. The Jazz have been a revolving door of a roster since the Deron Williams trade.
“We don’t want to be teaching guys to catch up with our system,” Exum said. “We had a lot of ups and downs. Hopefully we can continue from there.”
Nice and all but you not being able to put the ball in the hole is a major problem!
“I think the Jazz played a pretty smart middle ground,” said Tim Bontemps, a national NBA writer for The Washington Post. “They kept this group together and kept their flexibility for the future if it doesn’t work out.”
The problem with that is we already know it can't work out. You have to put some shooters on the floor other than Ingles. It's that simple!
The Utah Jazz did the basketball equivalent of saving your video game right before the boss battle. If this season goes well and they find success they can bring the same team back and make another run. If they find out that the second half of last year’s season was a fluke, they have incredible roster flexibility to make moves or allow these players to walk in free agency while having the space to go out and chase a Max Free Agency Player. In other words, they can go right back to their last saved point next year.
We already know it was a fluke after watching Houston destroy them. You waste a valuable season by bringing back the same team. Careers go by fast as we saw with Stockton and Malone or the brief Deron era
Ricky Rubio isn’t adjusting to all new teammates.
But he's still not hitting shots, making horrible passes and playing a matador on D.
Derrick Favors gets to stay in his element and re-signed with Utah knowing his role for the upcoming season.
You forgot to tell us about his improving corner 3 :lol
Dante Exum is finally healthy and doesn’t have PJ Tucker destroying his shoulder. He gets a full offseason to get better and he knows what his role is.
His role is super 6th man thanks to his new contract. He has to step up a lot based on that. I'm very skeptical he can and they are stuck with him for 3 years :wtf:
Raul Neto will be in his 3rd year with Utah now. He knows his role as a 3rd point guard on the team, but gets to continue to hone his craft with the best development staff in the NBA.
And continues to sit with Burks behind inferior players
The list can go on and on. When a team is stacked with talent and has a development staff that knows what they are doing, betting on internal development isn’t just some buzzword to make up for a bad offseason; it’s actually the best thing for a team going forward.
Bradley. He gets to sit behind 3 other guys despite his improvement.

As Jazz fans, we have come to expect the unexpected from Dennis Lindsey during the NBA draft. At the time though, the Tony Bradley deal was perhaps the most perplexing. Most mock drafts at the time had Bradley going in the early parts of the second round, so it may not have been necessary for them to move up in order to select him. I mean, they already had the 30th pick. Did they not think he was going to last two more picks?
They thought the Spurs would take him. Who knows if that's true. Lindsey said they got the two guys they wanted. Rather he's just talking who knows

All offseason Jazz fans wondered if there was a possibility of signing, or trading for, a big free agent. But with a limited cap situation, the Jazz were only able to re-sign important pieces like Derrick Favors and Dante Exum and will have to wait till next offseason to see if they can sign a big piece.
It's not that they weren't able. From all reports they didn't even look to do anything else but settle on the same team that isn't good enough. If it was just to wait for next year I get it but they had to pay Exum for two more years after this one. Makes zero sense to me. But that's the Jazz. Hard to believe they have a few seasons where they kept this much of the team or more though! :rant
Easily one of the most overlooked injuries in the league, Sefolosha would have been huge in the playoffs had he not gone down halfway through the year. Last season, Sefolosha posted a 1.33 real plus minus which was 6th best on the team. Before his injury? It was the best on the team.
He might not have been on the team still or not even playing. People seem to forget he was platooning when he got hurt. That's COTY stuff right there! :wtf:

The best-case scenario for Bradley would be jumping ahead of Ekpe Udoh in the rotation and playing some backup center. Udoh didn’t play a huge role for the Jazz last season, but he appeared in 63 games and always stayed ready.
The back-up center isn't Udoh. Best case is he dominates the G-league and they are forced to move on from Favors.
Playing himself into this kind of role would be big for Bradley. He obviously didn’t get much NBA experience in his first season, but getting a consistent spot on the bench instead of playing in the G-League would be a jump for him.
Not really. Unless he dominates the G-league he is better off down there than sitting at the end of the bench
Specific areas where I hope to see Bradley improve as a sophomore in the NBA would be defensively and shooting. He’s shown glimpses of his defensive potential, but needs to be more consistent and always play with energy. He has extremely long arms, and a solid frame, so you can see the defensive upside.
We’ve seen him step outside and shoot the mid-range shot pretty comfortably. Extending that out to the 3-point line and becoming a stretch-five would be big for Bradley as he looks to grow as an NBA player.
Defense. He can already shoot better than Favors ever will. Not hard to imagine him hitting 3's. Already saw him do it in pre-season

Cost some people their jobs. I liked what I saw from Kennard though. Jazz would probably like him too.
He was particularly effective in the first round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 28.5 points per game and leading his team to a six-game series win. Many fans and analysts would argue he was the main reason they were able to defeat Russell Westbrook, Paul George and the Thunder.
The game they blew the 25 point lead with Gobert on the bench would tell a different story. One of the worst teams in the league without Rudy.

https://thejnotes.com/2018/08/04/utah-jazz-depth-likely-leave-players-cold/
Over the last few season, the Utah Jazz have been able to do a terrific job of constructing a roster that is built to withstand the bruises of an 82-game season.
They have? They missed the playoffs one of those years and underachieved in another
Two years ago, CBS Sports released their rankings of the top benches in the NBA, and Utah was listed at number one. Since that time, not much has changed in terms of depth for the Jazz. They have continued to boast an impressive starting five, and a deep, talented bench to go with it.
Hasn't yet turned out that way though. What looks ddp at the beginning of the year doesn't look like it later. This year you have at least 3 guys in the rotation and two starting that don't fit. Is that deep? I'd rather have shooters myself than this imaginary depth
Without the serviceable talent of the bench, the Utah Jazz would likely not have been a playoff team over the past two seasons. Even when getting to the third player at each position, guys like Raul Neto and Ekpe Udoh played significant roles when dealing with injuries to Rudy Gobert and Dante Exum.

As it stands right now, the Utah Jazz project to have six guards on their roster for the start of the 2018-19 regular season: Ricky Rubio, Grayson Allen, Donovan Mitchell, Raul Neto, Dante Exum and Alec Burks.
This does not account for Naz Mitrou-Long, who is on a two-way contract, nor recent signee Jairus Lyles.
Added all together, that would mean the Jazz would be carrying eight guards on their roster next season, or put simply, over half of the roster spots the NBA allows a team to carry. Even on a rebuilding team, that number is ludicrous.
Lyles is in the G-league and 4 of those guys could play the 3.

Just look at a player like Paul Millsap, who had some absolutely fantastic seasons with the Utah Jazz, but was always on the outside looking in when the official team rosters were announced. As soon as he went east though? Four straight All-Star appearances.
He didn't make it in the west because the Jazz made him secondary to Boozer and than Jefferson. Had little to do with the conference. Jazz blew it! :rant
From January 19th on, Gobert averaged 14.4 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks, and anchored a defense that had a league leading defensive rating of 97.5. No other team had a defensive rating below 101. Two seasons ago, Gobert was snubbed from the All-Star team in favor of DeAndre Jordan. That season, he averaged 13 points, 12 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.
Was snubbed by Hayward

If you were to have a casual fan just watch the first half of the season, he would think that Rubio was one of the worst starting point guards in the league. His play was inconsistent, his decision making was spotty and his shooting was at times cringe-worthy.
He was one of the worst
There was a real argument over the first half of the season that the Jazz would have been better off trading Rubio. He was not playing well for himself. He was not making his teammates better. He was not helping the Jazz win games.
There's no real argument for keeping the guy. Mitchell needs the ball. O'Neale, Exum and now Allen need minutes. Need shooters and defenders. Ricky in the corner or defending the back of his opponent is stupid!!!
You can absolutely point to the absence of Rudy Gobert to explain those struggles, but Rubio is next in line to take the blame. Up until that point, he averaged only 11 points, and was only shooting 29 percent from three.
You forgot your COTY that kept rolling Rubio and Hood out there for 30 minutes a night no matter how bad they sucked

McCree wasn't waived. They didn't pick up his qualifying offer so he became a free agent. Now overseas.

Udoh stayed ready last season, and made a solid impact for the Jazz both on and off the court. If Bradley can get playing time like Udoh did, it would be big for his development.

In his time playing for Duke, Grayson filled many different roles, playing multiple years for a roster that changed dramatically from season to season. I believe this to be the reason for his fluctuating stat line through his college career. Blindly looking at his stats, it looks like he was basically a star his sophomore season, and his other three seasons were middling at best. Some may look at his college stats (which you can find here) and wonder whether Grayson is even cut out for the NBA. So where does he fit on the Jazz? Why do people like David Locke gush over him, and make predictions that Grayson will be a steady role player by the end of the season?
Locke works for the Jazz. That's what they do. Why people on these blogs act lik they too work for the Jazz is what is confusing. :confusedshrug:

The Utah Jazz are not receiving a ton of votes to come out of the West. Derrick Favors may hold the key to taking them to the next level.
For 4 years 1 player has been the difference between the Jazz being good and the Jazz being bad. That one player isn't Favors. They won't go to another level until they move on from Favors, Rubio and Exum and replace them with guys that can hit shots
Put into simpler terms, if you extrapolated the minutes when Derrick Favors was deployed as a small-ball center, he was averaging a line that only three other players cleared in the NBA last season: Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic and Karl-Anthony Towns. Not bad for a player that starts games off as a power forward.

Dennis Lindsey and the Utah Jazz have done a fantastic job over the last two off-seasons to ensure the team has maximum flexibility going forward. All of that hard work is likely going to come to a head during the 2019 NBA off-season.
Not being all in is doing a fantastic job? :facepalm
One of the primary reasons I am confident the Jazz will make the playoffs this year is because of internal growth and continuity in the roster. By simply running it back from last year, they are putting themselves in a great spot to succeed.
If your idea of success is the playoffs. They weren't that far from being out of the playoffs last year. Their goal should be to step it up though
The Jazz have signed contracts to ensure that they have maximum flexibility heading into this next off-season. After the 2018-19 campaign, Derrick Favors, Ricky Rubio, Alec Burks, Thabo Sefolosha, Ekpe Udoh and Raul Neto could all be off the team. The odds of every one of those players being gone is slim, but the chance is still there.
At least 4 of them could have been gone this year but aren't despite the coach not being a huge fan of any of them. Not hard to see all of them being gone by next year. Hard to imagine Neto, Burks, Thabo or Udoh being back though. Why would they be?
As much as we all love Derrick Favors, it is not likely that he will ever be able to shoot the three ball even above 35 percent. Price wise, I would expect Mirotic to garner no more than 15 million or so annually on his next contract. If the Jazz are ready to move on from a traditional two-big lineup, Mirotic is one of the best options out there.
Be lucky if he shoots 25%. Be interesting to see how the minutes play out between him and Randle this year

The high scorer on the Jazz last season was Donovan Mitchell (20.5 points per game). The second highest was Rodney Hood (16.8) and the fifth-highest was Derrick Favors (12.3). Crowder was only 0.4 points behind Favors in scoring average, and someone next season is going to have to fill in the 16.8 points Hood averaged. Crowder can play that role.
Burks is the only one that could play Hood's role and that isn't happening

Burks may have revived his shaky stock with a strong run through the 2018 playoffs. What started as a garbage-time novelty turned into important minutes by the time Utah was eliminated. If he continues to play at the level he did in those few weeks, he may command some rotation minutes this season.
Do people really believe this crap? Now he's behind Allen as well
The backcourt rotation is going to be hard to figure out this season. And the best shot at decent minutes for guys like Burks, Dante Exum or Grayson Allen may be position-less basketball. Quin Snyder toyed with the idea in 2015-16, but he may have to go it a lot more often to get the right guys on the floor in 2018-19.
They didn't pay Exum to sit :wtf:
Small ball with Jae Crowder was absolutely lethal for the Jazz last season. And with a healthy Thabo Sefolosha, Snyder could go to lineups like that more often. As is the case with the guards, it may be tough for every rotation player to get rotation minutes. This team is one of the deepest in the league.
Or he could platoon them!
Crowder has only had one season (2016-17) in which he put up an above-average three-point percentage. If he could become semi-consistent from outside, those small-ball lineups will be even scarier. Having as many guys as possible who can shoot, pass and create on the floor is one of the best recipes for NBA success these days.
And yet the Jazz will continue to play one proven shooter.
[QUOTE]If 150 is a rough estimate of how many starters are in the NBA (30 teams times five starters), you could make an argument that Crowder is a starting-caliber player. His role on the Jazz could be anywhere from sixth to ninth or 10th man this season. That

That is what makes this offseason so exciting for Dante Exum. He will finally have the chance to devote the time into bettering his skill set, and can enter a season completely healthy.
He was completely healthy into pre-season last year and was healthy the year before as well. Tired of the excuses. Time to show up and earn your 33 million :rant
The Jazz just gave Exum a three-year, $33 million contract with the assumption that he is still going to maximize his potential. At first glance, that dollar amount may seem too high, but by years end, it could begin to look like a steal.
Hard to imagine. He's no where close to a 9-111 million dollar a year player. He's a defensive specialist on a team loaded with defenders and an offensive liability on a team that needs offense
That defensive prowess is what led to Exum taking over the starting point guard duties from Trey Burke that season. He played in all 82 games, and started in 41.
Had more to do with Try sucking!
If I am the Jazz, I need to see that Exum can play that level of defense over the course of a full season. If he never improves his offensive game from where it is currently, but can be one of the top defensive wings in the league, then he will have earned that $33 million contract of his.
No he won't have! They have other defenders that don't suck at offense. He is an end of the bench player if all he can do is defend
Exum attempted a career high in shots last year, but he is simply taking less and less from three. While he does have an impressive ability to get to the basket and create contact, he absolutely has to attempt those shots when they are generated through the offense. His biggest strength of getting to the basket would actually be magnified by shooting more from three to keep the defense honest.
He'll certainly be left wide open. Him and Rubio and Favors and Gobert on the floor together!
Exum excels at getting into the teeth of a defense. This is going to force help defenders, which will lead to open teammates. Whether that is an open shooter in the corner or a big man for a easy layup or dunk, he has to show a consistent ability to get them the ball.
He has to be able to finish or no one will be open
With Grayson Allen behind him in the rotation, better decision making will be a must. Allen already showed us during the summer league that he has terrific vision, and if Exum wants to stay ahead of him in the rotation, he’ll have to limit his turnovers and make better decisions.
33 million dollars. He will be playing a lot regardless of how much he sucks just like Hood and Rubio last year

Hold your horses: Grayson Allen should not have a rotation spot over Alec Burks right away
He should not be ahead of anyone until he proves it but we know the Jazz don't do things that way anymore. Burks should be starting over Rubio but he's certainly the last guy on the bench
Did Alec Burks look nervously over his shoulder when the Utah Jazz selected Grayson Allen in the 2018 NBA Draft? Probably. Should he be worried about the rookie from Duke taking his spot in the rotation from day one? No.
Burks wasn't in the rotation. He only played at all because of injuries. Why is it that people that write this stuff don't even watch games? :facepalm
