What Allen showed that was surprising was a legit ability to pass the ball and create for teammates. Allen is a better passer than you think and, if he can improve, could become a legitimate backup point guard in the league. Considering his decent size and athleticism that would be a great outcome for the Grizzlies to find a rotation guy in their trade with Utah.
seriously? We talking about the same guy that either shot or turned it over every time he touched it? Wasn't much different with the Stars either. I saw 6th man if anything
The other thing that Allen does better than expected is rebound the ball. Allen had a knack for the ball and there were a few games where he would fight for boards and get them.
With the Stars he hit 3's and scored and not much else which was disappointing for a 1st rounder that was 23

The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 19.4 points and 8.4 rebounds during his senior season. Brantley also has shown the ability to hit the 3-point shot. As a junior, he was 38% from deep on 3.3 attempts per game.

While draftees taken in the 50s don't stick in the NBA all that often, all three selections play at a position of need for the Jazz after they traded Kyle Korver and Jae Crowder. That being the case, it stands to reason they'll get a legitimate shot to compete for roster spots.

Conley is headed to a Jazz team that ran more pick-and-rolls last season than all but a handful of teams, which should be a perfect fit for his skill set. DN: Last season, you took a step forward offensively with career-highs in points and rebounds, but what are your goals going into this year? What do you want to continue to do? Rudy Gobert: Keep getting better, keep getting stronger and keep adding things to my game that can help me and most importantly help the team to take another step. Obviously, we know that it’s going to be a few changes to the team, but I try to control as much as I can control as much as I can. I know that I can be an even better than I was last year. – via Deseret News
DN: Transitioning into our next topic, obviously a big deal was made for Mike Conley that won’t become official until July 6th but how does it feel to bring in a player of his caliber? Obviously, you’re losing some special teammates in the process, but do you feel that bringing in a guy like that can help you reach a championship level? Rudy Gobert: We’re definitely losing some guys that I really love to play with and be around in Ricky (Rubio), Kyle (Korver) — well, we didn’t lose Ricky yet, but he wants a starting job as he should, so it’s tough, it’s a tough part of the business but I think we wouldn’t be where we are without those guys. Now, we have another guy that comes in, I think a guy that can really help us take the next step, which is to me, play for a championship. – via Deseret News
DN: After competing against Mike and watching him over the years, what are your thoughts on him? Rudy Gobert: I always loved his competitiveness. He’s a guy that plays to win. He’s a guy that’s selfless, but still very aggressive but he’s a winner to me. I’ve had a chance to talk with him a little bit and I think he really wants to win, to help us and we want to help him at the same time. It’s going to be a great partnership. – via Deseret News

Neto has been with the Jazz since 2015, so it would be a bit surprising to Jazz fans if they let him go after retaining him for multiple offseasons in favor of a second-rounder, but crazier things have happened in the NBA.
It wouldn't be surprising at all. Only reason he's still around is because he is Rudy's buddy I''d say.
Despite the Jazz paying up for this pick and like Wright-Foreman, Oni figures to spend time in the G League with the Salt Lake City Stars and hope for a roster spot to open up in the next couple of offseasons.
I think he may already be better than Exum not that the Jazz care about that! :rant
Just because the rookies look good on paper doesn’t mean that will translate to the next level, but the Jazz have a proven track record of developing second round picks and projects like the picks they made on Thursday.
They do? They have a proven record of letting them go to other teams for little to nothing in return :wtf:

The other part of what gave the Jazz so much flexibility was players on good, tradable contracts, as well as several non-guaranteed contracts. Utah cashed in some of those assets when they agreed to send Jae Crowder, Kyle Korver, Grayson Allen and two first round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Mike Conley in a trade. The Jazz and Grizzlies had reportedly neared an agreement on a trade for Conley at the trade deadline, but the ability to match salary was too much for Utah at that point. The teams re-engaged when the season ended and came to an agreement before the draft.

[QUOTE]Utah had been linked to both Tobias Harris and Nikola Mirotic as frontcourt options, but both are probably out of range now with the trade for Conley. If the team waives Favors, they could still pursue Mirotic, whose shooting at the four spot would be a welcomed addition. The team would also need to find another player who plays both big spots, as Favors tends to functions as both the starting power forward and the backup center. Veterans like Taj Gibson or Ed Davis would be a perfect fit for that role, or the team could go younger and look at someone like Kevon Looney or Noah Vonleh. For more of a pure backup option for Gobert, Frank Kaminsky would be an interesting fit. His shooting would give the team a difference dimension from what they

As such, if Utah wants to get better still following the Conley trade, the most realistic way to do so would be to continue to explore the trade market. If they were to go that route, one player under contract that may make sense for them to look to move would be none other than the oft-injured Dante Exum. Exum has had his moments of brilliance, but overall his inability to stay healthy has made him a less than reliable or consistent option for the Jazz.

Utah Jazz: Replacing Derrick Favors with Nikola Mirotic would be a huge mistake
depends on the price. Maybe they fet him for half of what Favors makes and have more money to spend? Either way Favors needs to go!
Not only that, but we have yet to see what the Favors-Gobert combo can do with a point guard who is actually a scoring and shooting threat. The disadvantage caused by the trio of non-shooters in Gobert, Favors and Ricky Rubio was nearly impossible to overcome. But counting Favors out before seeing what he and the Stifle Tower can do with Mike Conley running the offense could be a huge mistake.
You forgot Hill already? That worked best when Favors was benched and replaced by Joe Johnson's last breath and the corpse of Diaw. Favors has to go!

This is the obligatory inclusion. I do not think Kevin Love is an option and I believe all the talk of Love to Utah is being floated out there by Cleveland to build a trade market that does not currently exist for the stretch shooting big man. While he can light it up from distance, the question with Love is can he guard the four spot? The answer as Love gets older might become more and more of a resounding no. He can guard the five, but then Utah finds themselves in a similar situation with Favors and Gobert. Two big men who play the same position but cannot spend a lot of time on the court together.

Despite several potentially enticing alternative options, the Utah Jazz should keep Derrick Favors this summer and see what he can do with Mike Conley.
Why? we already know Favors man will be guarding someone else and he will be paid a lot for not very many minutes
Obviously, trying to advise the Jazz on what to do would all depend on who is truly available. If players were beating down the door to sign in Utah, perhaps the argument to let Favors walk would be stronger because of the abundance of options. However, though we may never know specifics, there could always be that chance that the Jazz were open to parting ways with Favors, but the right interest from other parties simply never occurred.

The Jazz still have some work to do to fill out their roster. They have five total roster spots open, with the most immediate needs being another backup point guard and another solid forward or center, depending on where they see Davis fitting in best.
Plus 2 two ways. Davis could probably play some 4 with Bradley being able to space the floor. Defensively not sure it would work though? Need a wing more than anything I'd say. Have O'Neale and Exum. Don't want to count on Exum. Might want a combo guard with Exum and Neto and their injuries not to mention Conley's. A 4 to compete with Niang at the 4 would be good. Want to leave some flexibility to see what happens in Summer league and who they want to add from that. I'd think 4 of the Stars guys could be in the mix as well as Mitrou Long and their picks of course. Ideally leave some flexibilty to make moves later in the year after they see how the pieces fit and what they will need later at the deadline and with buyouts where they could be a top destination

Favors was drawing interest from several other teams in the league at just 27 years old after averaging 11.8 points and 7.4 rebounds on 58.6% shooting, while playing mostly out of position at power forward next to two-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. Rudy Gobert has not had this much spacing since George Hill, Gordon Hayward, and Joe Johnson were spacing the floor
and for some reason after Rudy put up 17 points a game with that lineup they thought it was a good idea to get Ricky and put Favors back in the starting lineup and waste two more years of Rudy's career. :rant

That is a shame. Perhaps the Jazz can bring him back on the vet minimum?
If he does not return, UTA has four roster spots to fill (including two two-way players and assuming all three 2nds stick).
Why would you think the 2nds would stick when they obviously need more vets for depth? Last time they had 3 2nds one got some guaranteed money. One was invited to camp and cut and played for the Stars which was stupid I thought but maybe the agent/player demanded it? And the other was stashed for a year before being given away for nothing for some reason.
Mitchell is the only rookie that has done anything in summer league under Snyder and the only one that deserved to play right away. If one of these guys does good in summer league I would look to sign them. Otherwise I'd want to stash them. Not sure why they don't like stashing players? The Spurs add guys to their roster every year that have been stashed. Big advantage. Like having a bigger roster

The two draft picks I liked from highlites were the ones that stood out especially the first pick Brantley. He might be able to help them at some point this year. Might have to find a roster spot for him. Looks like he's gotten into better shaped since college. Looked like he might be more of a 3 than a 4. Maybe some small ball 4? Can handle the ball and score it. Made some good defensive plays too.
The last pick Oni was a bit raw but active and athletic on D and can handle it too. Maybe a two way? The other guy made a couple nice shots but a bit of a gunner and small. Stash him on the Stars or elsewhere?
Bradley looked good against a more experienced player in Rabb who he's played against in the Gleague.
Willie Reed might be someone they look at for their bench as well. He's good.

where they are now is where the expectations should have been than. Instead they let Hill go and replaced him with Rubio and didn't go after another max guy that might have kept Hayward here
Instead of waiting, the Jazz shipped off several reserves and draft picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Mike Conley. The top-flight point guard provides the 3-point shooting the team desperately needed and has badly lacked since the NBA discovered that three points is more than two points.

#utahjazz roster is at 12 with 3 second round picks. Assuming one makes roster and 2 get the two way contracts, jazz can add 2 more players. Jamychal is 1st (But a long shot) other names I like are Thabo, Mbah a Moute, Korkmaz and Diallo. #TakeNote
Why bring back a guy the coach didn't like... again? Need to add Oni and Brantley from what I've seen. I'd add a vet with the other and I'd look for a guy with some experience for one of the the 2 ways like the first two they signed a couple years ago so he can sit on the Jazz bench while the two picks and Bradley play for the Satrs. Stash the other pick if possible

With the Conley trade & Bojan signing completed, Jazz sit $1.5M under the cap with 3 roster holds. This is the opportunity to add any players they want to 3 yr deals BEFORE signing Davis, Green or Mudiay. Total of about $3.3M to play with under the cap because as each contract...
Maybe for Oni and Brantley?

Lyles has the offensive skill set a lot of teams need. But his defense and his atttitide/hard work (insert three-hour practice joke) have limited his prospects.
the Jazz said he was their hardest worker except for Hayward though. Him thinking he was Kobe his 2nd year was a bigger problem

The Utah Jazz still have spots to fill on their roster despite a busy opening week of free agency. Former Jazzmen Ian Clark and Tyrone Wallace may fit the bill.
no thanks on Clark. Wallace and Oni replacing Exum on the cheap would be great
As it stands, the Jazz have 12 players locked up for next season (counting the partially guaranteed contracts of Royce O’Neale and Georges Niang). And while the they have done well to compile a deep, well-rounded roster, more able bodies on the wing is something that could definitely help the push for the title.
I'd say they need a center more than anything.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the LA Clippers made the decision to waive Wallace in the wake of their big move to bring both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George to La-La Land. He’s largely a victim of circumstance, though; after a ho-hum year in the Jazz developmental system, he really found life with the Clips.
He did fine here. gave him away for some reason?

A healthy Thabo can do a lot to bolster the Jazz bench should they go that direction.
but why not go with a guy the coach might like instead? :confusedshrug:
